Actually happy with the Flyers point last night. Should they have been in that position with a minute to go? I don't know but you'll always take the point this early when you score to tie in final minute.. Everyone said the Flyers would be terrible too. So I don't know.

Happy with the 4-2-2 start so far. Played strong against some really good teams. One regulation loss is on Mason. So that's it.

Just glad things are going well for you, man. Don't party too hard. You're definitely not as young as you used to be. I've seen that receding hairline.

Unreal game between the Caps and Pens. Really sucks to see the beautiful winning streak end. But damn that was a good game.

So after baseball is over, I want to get into a winter sport. I like basketball, and football is okay to me, but I think I really want to get into hockey. I haven't been paying attention to it at all, so how far into the season is it? Kind of want to follow the Islanders.

:thumbsup These two clubs know how to put on a show. My only nitpick is I want to see Crosby on the scoresheet more, but dammit this was a great win!

You, sir, are a wise man. Others in here can put it better than me, but hockey is a great time. The season is fairly fresh, having just started a few weeks ago. The regular season will run until mid-April, when the greatest creation in humanity, the Stanley Cup playoffs, begin.

The Islanders are an exciting young team with an electric young Captain in John Tavares. You'll have fun following them.

Know that nobody likes the Canucks, the Capitals are destined to blow 3-1 series leads in the playoffs, and the Blackhawks win all the things, you'll be set.

Very new into the season, you're good on that front.

As for a team to follow, you can go with the Islanders. OR, you can put every team's name on a piece of paper and put those pieces of paper into a hat. Then pull out every piece of paper until you have one name left, and that is the team you root for.

We are much better than any other sports thread in here. Helps that we are all pretty big fans of the sport. You don't get too many stupid conversations in here like in the other threads.

Also, look my fantasy team is awesome early in the season again. Can't wait to finish 4th after losing in the consolation round...

Welcome! What everyone else said, but this really is the best thread around. We've built what I think is a really cool culture and friendship here.

I'm the guy who likes the Avalanche and often goes on long diatribes about how defense is the best position in the sport and weighs in with overly lengthy expositions on why or why not someone should have been suspended for a hit. I rarely say anything of substance.

Also, Pierre Maguire is everything that is wrong with hockey.

Not to brag or anything, but I once caught a t shirt from the cannon at a game at Verizon Center a few years ago. The thing came right to me, literally I didn't have to move at all to make the catch. As soon as a grabbed it, I turned around and gave it to a little girl behind me. She and her dad were super thrilled. Well worth the crappy t shirt to see that kid get pumped.

A couple more recent ones I was thinking of:
Brodeur on the Blues
Modano on the Red Wings
Lindros on the Stars

What else do you guys got?

Since I'm, ahem, a little older but not much, I thought I'd throw out some other ones you may or may not have mentioned/heard of. Some before my time:

Bobby Orr, who was a Black Hawk
Guy LaFleur, who came out of a lengthy retirement of like 3-4 years to play for the Rag$ and then 2 more season with the Nordiques.
Peter Stasny as a Blue
Dale Hawerchuk as Flyer.
Igor Larionov as a Devil.
Markus Naslund as a Ranger.

Theme with the Rag$. Taking on old players past prime. I saw some others mention a lot of the most recent guys in the last 10 years. I assume Bourque was mentioned.

Yashin on the Islanders
Peca on the Islanders

Maybe not past their prime...but clearly not their main team they are known for. Yashin deal was insane.

that guy is seriously a piece of trash, glad they made it up to the kid

i was very happy with the overwhelmingly positive response Bylsma got last night....they had a nice video tribute for him too

his tenure didn't end well, but i've always been a disco Dan fan, and he brought a Cup to pittsburgh so in my mind, he's immortalized in the Pittsburgh sports scene

hope he does well in Buffalo

Good ones. I still have some hockey cards, I think, of LaFleur when he played for the Nords.

Re: The NHL Thread

As of now, I'm still in the 3 on 3 is better than a shootout camp. So I'm all for this. The Flyers will lose their fair share because they turn the puck over a lot and don't have a lot of guys with speed comparable to what other teams can put out there for 3 on 3. Flyers have played three decided in OT and lost two on a breakaway and won one on a 4-3 PP.

I find it really exciting and can put aside the fact that it's not "real" hockey to get games decided. I really don't think my opinion will change on that.

Re: The NHL Thread

I think some of the apprehension on 3on3 is that there isn't the security of thinking hold on to the shootout. I know I'm sitting there thinking you could lose (or win) at any second.

Like I said before I'm sure people will get sick of it after a while but it's better than shootouts. There is only two places to go if they end up not liking it. The 3 point system or back in to ties.

Re: The NHL Thread

I really like the 3 on 3 still, at least what I've seen of it. I think it really showcases a lot of fun, open talent kinda reminiscent of shinny, so there's some nostalgia. I can see why others may not like it though.

I think obviously, one of the reasons, I don't like the 3 on 3 is that we have now lost 2 in it whereas were generally a very good shootout team since Frans is one of the top shootout guys.

It is a little edge of your seat action but it is just crazy wide open back and forth odd man rushes and just isn't hockey. They knocked the shootout for it being a "skills competition" but that is just what the 3 on 3 is...a skills competition. It's just a different kind of skill.

They were age 27 when the Islanders acquired them, smack dab in their prime.

Peca was robbed of his prime by that POS Tucker, still one of the worst cheap shots ever (behind Dale Hunter, of course )

Players Rag$ have acquired past their prime in the last 15-20 years include.

Gretzky...yeah I went there :D and since.......
Bure
Kasparitis
Holik
Naslund
Valeri Kamensky
Brad Richards
Lindros
Scott Gomez (was supposed to be in prime but wasn't)
Wade Redden
Chris Drury.

Kept trying to throw money at people and it didn't work for a long time

If you wanna be technical, regulation hockey is just a skills competition as well. ;)

Surprised because of how sports works but maybe they feel it'll fix itself. I mean they were a fantastic team last year that got within 1 win of the Finals. Maybe they think it's a funk that they can get out of. Sometimes I do think teams jump the gun on firing guys. IE: Rangers firing Trottier after 54 games and the Avs firing Hartley early in the 02-03 season after he never lost before round 3 in every year he was there.

That is true that teams jump the gun and panic too early. Just seems they are far too in the hole already. Doesn't bother me though!

So, Caps just lost a challenge, and I don't have a problem with the goal against counting, but I'm not excited about the level of inconsistency with which goalie interference is being called. Figures, #garageleague and all

And they can't even drink out of it!! Baseball is so lame.

Also, I couldn't tell if they won the world series or the first round as they celebrate the same way. :lol hey we won the first round! Let's put goggles on and pour champagne on ourselves because we haven't even won anything yet.

I've always given baseball a pass for having champagne victories after each series. It's a grueling and long schedule.

A 162-game schedule is incredibly taxing, regardless how physical the sport is.

Come on guys, don't feed the Napoleon Complex stereotype hockey fans have with petty mocking of baseball. Seriously.

Yeah I don't get it. Celebrate making the playoffs. Celebrate winning the division if you do. Celebrate winning the division series, or both that and the wild card game if you are in that game. Celebrate winning the AL or NL CS. Celebrate World Series....no.

Yeah while it's the longest of the sports in terms of games, and they can play 6 out of 7 nights, but the other 3 sports are more grueling.

That said, I love late season/post season baseball.

It's not even a macho hockey thing for me though, I consider football and soccer every bit as grueling. There's obviously a lot of skill involved in playing baseball, but unless you pitch, it's not exactly non stop physical activity while you're on the field. The fact that they can even play 162 times emphasizes this.
