I fully expect Stastny to be gone now... they've definitely got to be seriously exploring some sort of trade to improve their atrocious defense. My heart leaped for a minute as I thought of perhaps them getting Weber, 'til I realized the Preds will want him more than ever now to tutor Jones. More likely the Phaneuf scenario gains more momentum. Since the Hawks seem to be willing to part with anyone, do you think they'd listen for offers on Seabrook or Oduya? If so, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

McKinnon is going to be great but is he going to so much better as a forward than Jones will be on D that you'd pass on a huge need? You take the best available if the next guy on your list for your need isn't anywhere close to the next available player. Like Carolina did. They needed D but couldn't trade down so they took the best available. Jones fit in Colorado and McKinnon probably fit in well with Florida.

Will miss Fro and Bolland but not their salary. Think we paid Bickell a little too much though. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

Looks like it will be about $5mil. That's a good deal for both if it ends up being true.

Also one rumor from the draft last night was Vinny wanting 5x5. 5mil and 5 years. That'll count the Wings out of it if that's true. It's not the money, he's still worth $5mil when you look at what some of the others are getting out there to do less, it's the term. I'd take him for 3 years but that's it. If he wants that he can go to Calgary and never win or Montreal and get bought out in 3 years.

My opinion on Streit. No prob giving him $5.25 because he will play to that contract the first two years. But he's at risk of being a +35 liability the following two years.

Even worse for Streit is that he was 35 when they signed him so if he retires early that money still counts against the cap.

So I like Mike Gillis saying buying out Roberto Luongo "wasn't a viable alternative". But now you have a goalie who was ready to leave that you have to keep until he's 43 cause if he retires early you get dinged with the cap recapture penalty. Is that a better alternative? Either he's being stupid or ownership is. I think it's both. He was dumb at last draft and during the short season for not taking what he could get for him and I think ownership is stupid for not giving up the money to get him off the books cause I don't see him playing until he's 43 and even if he does I can't see him being even close to worth the $5.3mil cap hit.

The Hawks cleared $5.6 million in cap space off of THE FOURTH LINE while picking up 5 prospects.....uhhhhh, that's awesome.

Well technically cleared only $1.6mil by subtracting two players with the signing of Bickell. The picking up of 5 prospects for two guys who probably wouldn't be back next year is nice however.

To play devils advocate you realize Joel Quenneville had 0 playoff success with some pretty decent teams in St Louis right? So if we are basing it off of past success then the Hawks never should have won. Not saying they win Cups in Van. or NYC but the Canucks needed to be tougher and they got Torts and the Rangers needed help on offense and they got AV. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.

Bolland is a quality depth guy. His game has declined the last few seasons. The Blackhawks shopped him 3 straight summers. That's why he's gone. Like you said should be a 2/3 C guy for the Leafs.

I have a feeling he will do well on the Leafs. His grit will fit in well with Carlye's system. He won't become the next Mats Sundin or anything, but will be a real character guy on the roster. Never hurts to have a guy with two Cup rings on your young roster, either.

While I may be extremely biased towards Bolland, this is ridiculously wrong.

Bolland had a great season last year (2011-2012) where he put up 19 goals in a semi-injury plagued season, was definitely not shopped prior to the 2011-2012 season, and has been a playoff performer his entire career.

He basically single handedly made the Vancouver 2011 series go to 7 games. He was rushed back from injury this year for the playoffs, was never 100% healthy, and the bandwagon Hawk fans that haven't watched him for 5 years started crying about how he's garbage.

He started getting his game together in the Boston series, had his best games in games 1 and 6.

He has a ceiling of a 2C and a floor of a 3C. You nailed it when you said he's a 2/3 C guy.

He has a knack for being a big game/clutch performer, but does disappear for weeks during the regular season. He's incredibly streaky. As soon as you start getting frustrated with him, though, he'll do something to make you fall back in love with him. He'll match up against the top lines every time, and frustrate them without fail. I wish I could find a better video quickly, but this was one of my all time favorite Bolland series, against San Jose in 2010. Joe Thornton looked like he wanted to throw Bolland out of the arena by the end of it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLzH0VRYSVs

Just slashes the hell out of Bolland's wrist at the dot.

You'll enjoy him. I promise. Anyone that's a fan of grit, peskiness and a little bit of skill...he's your guy.

Newbury is a former Leaf prospect. The guy got into a fight once and in one hit fell down like a ton of bricks, breaking his orbital bone. I don't think he played a game for the Leafs again after that.

Beat me to it. Our prayers have been answered. Too bad injuries robbed you of a chance to reach your true potential Ricky. But it was time for you to go and I'm glad they are buying him out so he doesn't take time away from the kids at Bridgeport.

Still believe it's 80% Nabby is resigned to be our #1 this year. Options are now limited based on the last week of transactions.

Get Bryz!

It is too bad. He seemed to have all the talent in the world too. Also glad they are doing it and not letting him sit down there. For the kids and for him too. Maybe he can catch on somewhere or maybe in Europe. Hate to see him rotting in the minors the way Redden did.

Today's the day! We should finally have closure on that stupid fiasco in Phoenix. Of course the council meeting is at 7:00pm MST so 10pm here so I doubt it's done by the time I pass out but we'll see. Glendale is playing chicken with the NHL it seems.

Eric Macramalla ‏@EricOnSportsLaw
"Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers says todays #Coyotes deadline is artificial; Daly disagrees and says wants "certainty" today - guess we'll see"

Even if it was an artificial deadline, my guess is it isn't now. The NHL would lose a lot by saying it's a hard deadline and then not move them. Come on Seattle...or Quebec or...shit anywhere would be better than Phoenix right now.

i think it's going to be a 70/30 split depending on injuries, but it's marty's last season, you let him do it on his own terms. he's the face of the franchise and it'd be a huge disrespect.

:thumbsup That being said, Marty has so much respect from the organization, I think he will hold a certain pull over how many games he plays, to some degree. I'm not saying he will play all 82 games, but if he hints that he'd like to play a bit more, I can see him getting a few more starts.

@THNKenCampbell: Since the new CBA, NHL teams have spent a total of $97.9 million on compliance buyouts to players to not play for them.

God Bless America. Then starting Friday a guy with a shoulder injury (Horton) will get a 6 year deal, a 34 year old will get a 5 years deal (Vinny) and a guy who can skate fast will get decent money (Stalberg). Oh and a guy who has only scored more than 20 goals once in his career will probably get $6mil+ (Clarkson). I don't expect the Wings to be signing anyone because they are...what's the word....oh smart. Disappointing as Vinny would be a good fit on the 2nd line for 2-3 years for the Wings.

He's not young (24), and the Hawks signed him to a 1 year deal with a $1.4 million cap hit. He'll luckily be a RFA after this year, so maybe their plan all along was to see how he fairs in Rockford and see how he adapts to our game over here, and then resign him for the following season.

Like Lecavalier my issue is same; ZERO organizational direction. Valuable part of youth movement likely to be sacrificed for cap space

Brutal. I mean a two-three year deal. MAYBE. But this is nonsense. Joke of a front office. Which is a shame because I love my team and a lot of these players. And I like the coach.

5 year deal for 33-yr old? At $4.5m a year? Giving 5 years to a 33 yr old winger who could Gomez at any moment? Really bad idea. He's already clearly on the decline.

And we thought the Streit deal was bad. I mean, at least you can say they are really trying hard to be competitive this year and they could be pretty damn good.

Even though no one uses our site anymore I posted this.

For the sake of all the fans, however few, and the tax payers of Glendale, I hope it works. But I doubt it. They are lucky to be in the West with 14 teams. Will make it slightly easier to get into the playoffs. However, they still wouldn't have made the playoffs this season. The new Jets would have been ahead of the old Jets.

Oh good news morning here at least, Colaiacovo will be placed on waivers and bought out. Now if only Samuelsson was healthy and they could buy him out too. Well saves some money.

arizona is definitely a place where the words great, hockey, and town should never be consecutively.

Great place? I'm sure it is. I'd love to go to a hockey game in January wearing shorts. Hockey town? Playing to like just over 60% capacity when your team was winning is what now?

Or just look at these couple of videos from series against the Wings and Hawks and see how a lot of the people are rooting for:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEEHrCqnbkU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKODcxaDOXg

Those are PLAYOFF games where at least 30% of the crowd is for the other team. AT LEAST.

Considering the money he could have gotten on the open market, it's not a bad deal for the Pens.

Would have liked to see it be no more than three years at his age, but he was due a hefty raise after being 15th in goal scoring last season, being a 60 point scorer the year prior, missing two games over the past four seasons, and being a key component on the most productive line in the NHL.
