Like I said, the NY Rangers can’t hold a 3rd period lead. Went in up 4-0 to the third and gave up 3 goals, 2 in the last minute and got totally out okayed in the entire period.

Great that they were able to beat to Panthers, but yikes.

Re: The NHL Thread

Man, I was just looking at Kakko’s and Laf’s numbers and it made me realize just how incredibly bad the NY Rangers have been at development. There is really no excuse for this. When all 4 of your picks within the top 10 of the NHL draft (especially #1 and #2 overall) turn out to be “busts,” how do you not realize you (as the team) are the issue and not the players.

I really hope there is still time for Laf and Kakko, but to be honest, Laf being on the 4 line is just crazy at this point. The Rangers are never going to win a Cup if they don’t develop all of their talent. It is crazy that 15+ years into the cap age that NY still hasn’t figured that part out.

They seem to find elite goalies and then hide behind them to mask the obvious weaknesses elsewhere in the roster. The teams that win cups developed home grown talent and then added the pieces later to compliment it. NY has once again elected to do the opposite.

This is the story for the Rangers. Young guys on the 3rd and 4th lines playing with average players and face punchers. Plus they lead the league in shot differential and not in the good way.

Zach Fucale, the Caps’ goalie tonight, got a shutout in his first ever career NHL appearance. First time in Washington franchise history. He was drafted by Montreal in 2013 and bounced around the minors until finally getting a start tonight. Parents were there and everything. Love stories like that.

The numbers speak for themselves.

but really, we have a shit ton of new people and its been incredible that they can find wins early. No one was more mad at letting Ned walk than me, but Andersen has been a solid netminder so far. Toronto fans are punching the air. Injuries have been disappointing and their inability to find the empty net at the end of last nights game was giving me anxiety.

ESPN's NHL Power Rankings are further proof that they have no clue what they are talking about. Their criticism about the NY Rangers was the team's defense saying they had no good defenseman. They really never heard of Adam Fox I guess? Insanity. The Rangers Defense is one area I think is set long term with the youth on the blue line.

The Hockey Guy on YouTube is really becoming the only source of Hockey Content I can stand anymore lol. Even the Rangers fan sites are awful to read at this point.

I mean they aren't wrong:

Quote:

Most likely to trade for a defenseman. And no, it's not because Connor McDavid recently carved through the team like a hot knife through butter. At least not entirely. The Rangers have relied on Igor Shesterkin to win too many games, while their defense corps could use a boost in general. They don't have a single blueliner above 50 in Corsi for percentage or in expected goals for percentage, and they've been giving up too many high-danger looks. Shesterkin can only stop the bleeding for so long.
Rangers give up way too many shots. Their shot differential is -86. Third worst in the NHL and Igor is saving their ass. However I think forwards have a large part in shot differential moreso than defensemen.

Yeah, my main issue was wording it like the Rangers defense is crap. It is actually huge that they are winning games when the D hasn't been great to start. Their D has been solid the last few seasons and has a lot of very good young players coming in. Not to mention Adam Fox is the best D man in the league. It was just weird to highlight it like it is one of the worst defenses in the league that needs help now when they don't and will likely be fine.

I agree the forwards are not doing their job playing 2 way hockey and limiting shots. Watching most games, the Rangers biggest issues is a lack of depth at center and no one that can win a face-off. Fix those problems and the Rangers could be scary good.

Remember, this team is learning a new system under a new coach and have had the start they had. They could be really good once everyone buys in and is playing it well.

Shesty is saving them a lot on many nights, but I remember how bad the Rangers looked in 2014 under AV to start the year and they went to finals as one of the best defensive teams in hockey by the end.

Last point, they also had NY behind a lot of teams they have played better than to start haha. I am not getting hung up on this point though since I do think the Rangers have been lucky to win a few of the games they have.

Their main points are right on though. Rangers have been awful at giving up too many shots since forever. Two of our supposedly best Dmen in Girardi and Staal were absolute disasters in advanced stats.

Don’t look now, but we’re roughly a quarter of the way through the season and the Caps have the fewest regulation losses in the league. Unfortunately, they also have 5 overtime losses, but that’s 19 out of 22 games with at least a point. And Ovechkin has been a wrecking ball thus far. Far less than a lot of the cities currently on the worst attendance list.

Houston is the 4th biggest city in the county (Phoenix is 5th), and the 5th biggest metro area in the country (Phoenix is 11th)

And I would argue hockey doesn’t really work too well in the cities above it (Anaheim and Dallas) or below it (former team in ATL and currently Miami). Population doesn’t dictate sport enthusiasm, just gives you a higher denominator for success or embarrassment.

Atlanta definitely has the population to support hockey. Having lived there for a while, I was surprised with how many hockey arenas are around the area. There is even curling. Lots of hockey fans there. The issues with the Trashers organization was 100% bad ownership. I’m not arguing that Atlanta is a great hockey market, but they definitely got a raw deal. I honestly this hockey makes more sense there than it does in say Columbus.

I agree with the Hockey Guy’s take though, Atlanta probably won’t get another chance since they lost 2 teams now.

My Canes just can’t stop committing penalties late in the game. Ugh.

Smaller market cities are a fascinating thing, across all sports.
