If true, I don't see how LA wouldn't match that. They have the cap space, although it's tight. The term shouldn't worry you. Maybe Garth should give a goalie a lifetime contrat....oh never mind.

:lol I thought the same thing! I was like, "he didn't even get this excited when he won his Cups!"

Good for Joe. What a rockstar. Everyone here knows of my Foote obsession, and certainly he's the player I've attempted to model my own game after, but if you were to ask me who my favorite player of ALL TIME was, the answer comes easily. Super Joe Sakic. There have been few that have played the game with a better combination of class, dignity, determination, and downright skill.

He was a class act, but 1996 he killed the Wings. He had good years and good playoffs after that but nothing was like 96.

It's being reported Chris Osgood is to announce his retirement today. Most underrated and looked down upon goalie in this history of the NHL. 400 wins, .539 winning percentage and 3 Cup (two as a starter) and he played well enough for them to win in 09. He's got a better winning % than Grant Fuhr, Tony Espo and Cujo. And he didn't do it all with the Wings. He went to the Island and the Blues for a few years.

This is the bottom line. Was Osgood helped by having the likes of Nick Lidstrom, Slava Fetisov, and Brian Rafalski on his blueline over the years? You bet. But was Patrick Roy helped by having guys like Foote, Bourque, and Blake on his? Absolutely.

Right on. Had Roy stayed in Montreal his career would have ended much sooner imo and would he be looked at the same way if his career ended badly there? He missed the playoffs in 95 and got lit up by the Wings in his last game with the Habs. Going to the Avs got him two Cups and 6 trips to the WCF's or beyond out of his 8 years there. That wouldn't happen with the Habs. Playing with that team there brought him back from the brink.

That's why hockey is such a team game. From the earliest levels, the individual is de-emphasized.

Osgood had his ups and downs over his career (just like Roy), but overall, he can look back over the last 20 years and be pretty damn proud of his accomplishments.

That's the cool thing. If you want to continue on with hockey they'll find a spot for you. That has a lot to do with Illitch too I think. Doesn't even matter how long you were here. Pat Verbeek had a gig here and was only here for two years. Now he's in TB with Stevie.

I remember a few years ago Ozzie saying he'd love to just be the Tigers bullpen catcher. What a perfect gig that would be for a retired goalie.

Osgood playing on great teams doesn't make him a HOF'er. How many All-Star games was he in? How many Vezina trophies?

He won games with great teams in front of him. Was he a winner? Yes. Was he PERSONALLY good enough to be classified as a HOF'er? No, IMO.

But hell, if Dino Cicarelli can get in, anyone can. :lol

Osgood is a tough call, and I see both sides. Sure, he wasn't as individually talented as, say, Brodeur, Roy, or Hasek. But then again, hockey players are often made great IN PART because of the players they played with. Like I said a few posts prior, the individual is completely de-emphasized in hockey. Would many of the current HOF'ers be where they were if they weren't surrounded by good players?

Stats aren't everything, but here's Osgood's final numbers if anyone's interested. You can't argue with many of them:
- 10th all time in wins
- 3 Stanley Cups (two as starter)
- Named to 3 All Star games (sat out 1 because of injury)
- 401-216 record
- 2.49 GAA
- .905 SV
- 50 shutouts

He was never the "star" of his team, and did have his off nights (who didn't). But I think all things considered, Ozzie deserves a spot in the Hall.

fonzz41 07-19-2011 02:10 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Just for the sake of discussion, here are HOF'er Patrick Roy's career numbers, who I picked because he's the most recent goalie selection (from Wikipedia):

- 3 Stanley Cups (all as starter)
- 3 Vezina trophies
- 11 all-star appearances
- 4-time first team all star, two-time second
- Most NHL playoff games played by a goaltender (247) (second most playoff games of all players)
- Most NHL playoff wins by a goaltender (151)
- Most Conn Smythe Trophy wins (3)
- Most NHL playoff shutouts (23) – tied with Martin Brodeur.
- First NHL goalie to play 1,000 NHL games (finished with 1029 games, later passed by Brodeur).

- 551-313 record
- 2.54 GAA
- .910 SV
- 66 shutouts

FYI: Roy played 19 seasons, Osgood 17

Interesting how similar their stats are (obviously not in games played), yet how many more accolades Roy received. Go Patrick! ;)

lockman21 07-19-2011 02:17 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

3 Vezina trophies, 3 Conn Smythe, 4 time first team all star (2 second), 11 all star appearances.

Also, 10 seasons starting at least 60 games, with a couple in the upper 60s. Roy was lightyears ahead of Osgood.

Sure their GAA and SV% are relatively similar, but anyone who watched both play could EASILY tell you that Roy was the better goaltender. Easily. Just because his SV% is close to Roy's doesn't mean he's in the HOF. Roy was one of the best ever, Osgood isn't even one of the best of the past 10 years.

fonzz41 07-19-2011 02:25 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Again, I was just posting numbers for comparison's sake, and commenting on how similar their stats were. There was no hidden agenda there.

I'm the Avs fan here, do you think I would in my right mind ever concede that Osgood was even close to Patrick? :lol ;)

fonzz41 07-19-2011 02:32 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

But even with Patrick better, I still think Ozzie had a HOF-worthy career. Will he get in? That's questionable; there will be a lot of worthy candidates when he is eligible, and you just never know who will make the cut. But is it HOF worthy? I think so.

Just don't get why more people aren't up in arms about it. Anyway.

You know what I've never understood either about the Hall of Fame? That it's a hall of FAME, not a hall of HIGH STATISTICAL NUMBERS.

Always think of Paul Henderson because of this. Wildly popular, scored perhaps the biggest goal of all time, but had a relatively crappy career. But he was really, really famous because of the goal. Shouldn't he be in the hall of FAME?

Stamkos was actually talking about all the offer sheet rumors yesterday. He said he got texts from people who photoshopped his face with Phil Kessel's body when he got traded to the Leafs. People actually believed it.

hahahaha that is awesome

Always think of Paul Henderson because of this. Wildly popular, scored perhaps the biggest goal of all time, but had a relatively crappy career. But he was really, really famous because of the goal. Shouldn't he be in the hall of FAME?

Guess we'll have to put Bertuzzi in too because of the fame he received after his disgusting actions on the ice.

Some people out there were like oh he's young he didn't do much and blah blah. He kept a FLA team in the playoff hunt while they were selling off their team. Not his fault they are a crap organization. My best comarission about the young coach thing was Mike Babcock was a rookie coach in 02-03. Enough said.

Ken Dryden. Great goalie but shit how many HOF's were on those teams? Sames goes for Sawchuck and Plante and others. Not saying he should for sure be in but but Dryden on the Scouts in the 70's he isn't who he is.

Up in arms because someone didn't throw a huge contract at him? I like everything he had to say. Seems like he wanted to stay. I wanted him to stay. If had left for a huge contract we would be getting into NBA territory and I don't want that. TBL needs him more than anyone else. Glad he stuck around and he knows he'll still get good money now and when he signs a long term one in 5 years. It's good for himself and probably good for what Yzerman wants to build there.

News today: Wings officially announce they have signed Conklin. Perfect backup.

Classy of the Wings to wait until after Osgood's retirement to announce the signing, to avoid the appearance of Conklin "pushing out" Osgood from his roster spot.

That's why I think Eric Lindros should be in the Hall of Fame. The guy changed the perception of what a big man can do in the game. When he was healthy and in his prime, there was no stopping him.

I think you can make the strong argument that, especially in hockey, coaches get way too much credit, and way too much crap, when things go good and bad, respectively. If you have good players, they'll figure it out.

The Stammer thing, yeah, it wouldn't have worked, they would have just matched, he wants to stay in TBL, I understand, but why are there not even attempts to sign him. If teams came out and said, 'yeah we tried to offer him something but he said he wouldn't sign', that would be something. The fact no offer was even put his way in three weeks is just appalling.

I wonder if the PA is kind of pissed off, I mean, the more $$$ he gets the more $$$ they get.

I agree on the coaching thing. Not saying I wouldn't rather have Babcock over others but sometimes players have to be held responsible too. Coaches are the easy scapegoat.

As for Stammer no official offer doesn't mean people didn't poke around. I honestly think it came down to no one wanted to give him the 11-12mil it would have taken to sign him especially with the unknowns of the CBA.

MacGuyver 07-20-2011 09:18 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Didn't hear a shred of anyone talking to TBL about an offer sheet - you would think that would have leaked.

Again, looking from a homer leafs standpoint, Wilson went from being a brutal coach with Gustaffson and Giguere, to being a great coach as soon as Reimer came in.

Either they have him a sweet deal or he didn't want to live out of a suitcase anymore. Probably a little of both. He lives here in Michigan but does Devils games. Lives out of a hotel during the season. A lighter schedule and being able to be at home more will probably be nice.

I love Doc but he was definitely mixing up a ton of Bruins names in the finals. He got Seguin and Peverley confused numerous times.

You're lucky. Other than Wayne Simmonds, Dustin Brown would look good in a Flyers uniform. Definitely tell him to sign up though. We're all great guys, and we wouldn't give him grief. :lol:lol:lol

EDIT: Except Joe would probably tell him he sucks if they ever met in the SCF, and the Chicago boys would threaten to cut his balls off.

I wouldn't William Wallace him. Just whenever he came my way I would give him a nice warning of a nut shot

I would love to go head to head with a NHL player--that would be sick. You really need to get him on here. Tell him we all have some sort of disease. Hockey players are gracious guys. They'll do anything for the sick.
