These Avs are so green, and that makes them kind of... endearing, maybe? They just go out and work their asses off because they don't know any better. Like I quoted Melrose last night as saying, they're "too young and too dumb to quit". They've got basically four vets on the team - Giguere, Talbot (who's barely 30, but that's still old on this team), Sarich and Hejda - and three of them have won Cups. That helps, but still a lot of green. Can't wait to watch them grow together.

They also believe in each other and ooze confidence in tough situations. Look no further than Roy whipping out his balls and pulling his goalie with 3:00 left in a playoff game, and then his players responding with confidence and poise.

All that being said, Minnesota scares me going forward. They have a very balanced team that plays a game of pressure and positioning. The Niederreter (sp?)-Cooke-Brodziak line will be tough.

yea the old "too young and naive to understand the pressure"--and it shows in the way they play, and the way roy coaches

i'm pulling for them for sure, but man do i miss matt cooke, the pens could use him right now...he's the perfect playoff checking liner

i actually think the avs take care of business fairly quickly now, just a gut feeling

See after last night, it just reaffirmed what I though, that it would go 6 or 7. Wild showed they can play with them and I think it'll be a tough series. I guess it could be a deflating loss for them, but we'll see in game 2.

and it very well could go 6 or 7, like i said, it was just a gut feeling

those losses aren't easy to bounce back from, especially being on the road

If they play the way they usually do, they will for sure. Varly, for one, will be tighter. He let in a couple that he would like back - very uncharacteristic of him. But he tightened up in the 3rd, along with the rest of the team. Imagine when they get Duchene back.

I'm fully comfortable admitting that even with all their flashy speed and skill, their fate rests on the shoulders of Varlamov.

Cooke was very noticeable last night, and in a mostly good way. Tight checking, lots of pressure, and smart. One classic Cooke move, though, that you don't notice when watching that Johnson highlight... After Johnson swatted it away and the whistle blew, Cooke shot it back at the net, and thus Johnson. Not full speed or anything, but enough to get his attention. EJ was PISSED, and Cooke got mugged. :lol

Right? We had friends over watching the game, and I was telling them just before that about Cooke's troubles the past few seasons, and how I thought it was cool that he'd made an effort to clean up his game and still be effective, blah blah blah. Then he does that, and I was like, "THERE he is". :lol

Probably. I hear the whole team blazes it up in the locker room after games. Why do you think Roy has been so calm since that first game when he almost killed Boudreau?

The biggest difference between Rinaldo and Carcillo is that Rinaldo has a brain. He isn't the most intelligent person on the ice, but he understands how to play the game way more than Carcillo. He is an elite hitter and plays with more hustle than most players in the NHL. While he takes dumb calls from time to time I feel he is doing better. You have to remember he is only 23 and he has a lot of time to get more experience. If you want to talk goon on this team point to Rosehill

Why, because I don't kiss the organization's ass regardless of how pathetic their moves have been over the past decade or so? Because I actually care about how a season turns out?

As I said before, you are the worst kind of Flyers fan because in your world everything is awesome, the front office can do no wrong, and as long as they take the ice you're content with the result. It's pathetic.

With the Flyers, it's the same shit every year -- suspect defense, a revolving door at goaltender, trading away talent and getting nothing in return. But they put a decent team on the ice year in and out, and that's all people like you seem to care about. 17 playoff appearances in 19 years and NOTHING to show for it.

The fact that the above makes me as frustrated as it does proves that I'm a fan. I'm just sick of mediocrity and early exits.

Rinaldo is certainly better than Carcillo, but not by enough that it's all that redeeming. And getting better? He has a huge play last week, and immediately negates it with a hit that gets him suspended for 4 games. He might be less of a moron, but he's still a moron.

Early exits?

'95, '97, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2010 were not early exits.

Just because the Flyers haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1975, doesn't mean they're not successful. They just haven't won the Cup. You know who hasn't also won the Cup in awhile? Vancouver, Toronto, the Rangers won in 1994 but hadn't won since 1940, Boston was in a terrible drought until they won in 2011, same with Chicago in 2010.

The Flyers have the second highest winning percentage in NHL history. They are successful.

Have we talked yet about how Getzlaf is playing tonight? As if any of us are surprised (it's the Cup, baby).

I kind of alluded to this the other day when I was talking he and Perry up, but I'm liking him the more and more I watch him. He's matured into one of the league's premier all-around players and leaders. Decorated too, eh? Two gold medals and Stanley Cup, and he's not even 30 yet. Not bad.

Vancouver, Toronto, the Rangers won in 1994 but hadn't won since 1940, Boston was in a terrible drought until they won in 2011, same with Chicago in 2010.

The Flyers have the second highest winning percentage in NHL history. They are successful.

The bold completely proves my point -- you are a typical Flyers sheep who's content to just have a winning season. For some of us, after 17 playoff appearances in 19 years, the 2nd highest playoff appearance percentage in the history of the NHL, and NOTHING to show for it in 39 seasons, it's not enough anymore.

Look at the past four seasons:

2010-11: Lost in the semis
2011-12: Lost in the semis
2012-13: Missed playoffs
2013-14: Undecided, but likely a first round exit

Zero progress in four years. How can you remotely defend that??

If only the Flyers kept Daigle, traded for Fata, and drafted Giroux a few years earlier they might have the strongest mightiest lines in all of hockey. Rico Fata would win 200 Selkes and Giroux would win so many Hart Trophies that he would just ship them off to Africa along with the Flyers 2010 Stanley Cup champions t-shirts.

Every team's dream line. At that point, you don't even NEED a goalie to win Cups.

Which is why the Flyers employed this for ten years:

Fun fact: The Pens have also gone this route since 2004.

Crash has been dead on about the Flyers. Sills is a Philadelphia fan more than a Flyers fan. Reminds me of Mike Mussolini or whatever his name is. Gigantic blowhard that uses broad negatives to rile up those against him and acts like only he is right. Get the fuck off your high horse. The Flyers haven't won the Cup in forever but they sure as hell haven't been a shit hole like you are making them out to be. Hockey may be the toughest sport to win the championship in.

NHL playoffs are pretty damn enjoyable when you don't have a team in them. Can enjoy them for what they are without having too much of a heart attack.

I don't want to say it's under appreciated, but definitely under spoke about as a skill is a player who can take a hit and still make a play with the puck. I've seen it a few times in the Boston and Detroit game by both sides. Takes nerves a steel to see someone like Chara or another big hard hitting guy and still make a play

Is that figuratively or literally? Pretty much every game I've watched so far has been outstanding hockey, IMO, so that's why I ask.

Pisses me off that they keep showing the Lucic one on NBC sports and not the one from the Ducks game. Then they show the one he did earlier this season saying he should get a call because he's done it before. The Emelin one is a joke though, clearly doesn't spear him like he did to Helm tonight.
