I disagree, it's good that they were able to generate more revenue/game but they still lost almost 30% of the revenue that a full regular season would have produced. If you consider the amount of money that was being fought over during the lockout, losing 30% of a full season's revenue is pretty significant.

Yes they lost 28% of 2012's revenue but missed 42% of the games. So per game they actually made more money than last year. So that means they'll surpass 2012's revenues in 2014 and now they'll get 50% of that instead of 43%. So missing 42% of a season gains you money not even a year after doing it, why would the NHL not try again?

I'm not ready to jump to the conclusion that there will be a repeat next year. I think the shorter season makes it easier to get fans into the arenas/watching games and they basically had every big market team contending.

That's true and possible. But think about all the outdoor games happening next year. The Winter Classic alone would have given a huge boost to revenue next season and now they'll have even more of those. Also can be used for this year too. Lost only 28% of revenue in a half season without your biggest money maker.

I gotta say, as much as I despise Gary Bettman--what's he done for hockey, right or wrong, has been nothing short of a miracle.

I hate how he comes off as such a little prick, but the league overall is better than before he took over. Money-wise they are obviously better. Have a better tv deal (granted it took starting on OLN to do it) things like the Lindros to Philly/NYR fiasco from 92 wouldn't happen today. He's done some stupid things like Coyotes and letting the Whalers move to Greensboro while the arena in Raleigh was being built. They were a cluster-fuck of a league before he took over.

Stastny is a 3rd liner on that team. He's a good Centre with a high skill level but he doesn't get a straight up deal for Phaneuf. The guy is a quality top 2 d-man and our Captain. I couldn't imagine that being the deal. It would have to be a much bigger package than Phaneuf for Stastny but I can't even think about what that would include.

Respectfully disagree, my friend. After watching Stastny play most of career, I can say that when he's on his game, Stastny is a top tier talent who could easily slide into the 2C spot. He's got the talent to be a first-line center, but not sure that's really his role any more. His biggest issue is his offensive inconsistency; he's got a good shot and is an above-average passer with very soft hands, but he disappears for stretches. However, he always works hard and is responsible in all three zones. He'll go to the front of the net and into the corners, and he'd probably find himself playing on your 2nd PK unit. Because of his work ethic, he's been an effective leader on the young Avs.

I am not doubting Phaneuf's talent by any means. My perpetual boner for quality NHL defensemen is no secret in these parts, and Phaneuf has the talent to be one of the top defensemen in the league. However, like Stastny he is notoriously inconsistent. His bomb of a shot and penchant for big hits are offset by costly miscues that seem to have been a part of his game going back to his Calgary days. Some have also questioned his attitude, which to his credit has seemed to improve the past couple seasons as he's been a leader on his team. Examining both players, I would easily say both players have just about equal value right now at this point in their careers. Both (especially Stastny) may benefit from a fresh start somewhere else.

What has been the biggest downfall for the Avs the past 4 seasons? Inconsistent defense. I don't believe the Avs will overpay to get yet another inconsistent defenseman. Could they use Phaneuf? Absolutely. He's still got potential to be a superstar d-man. In fact, I can see him playing really well with a steady, reliable d-man like Erik Johnson. If they do get him, I do not believe they will offer multiple assets. Of course, I'm already starting to question the Avs' mettle with all these rumors of them going after McKinnon instead of Jones in the draft...

And he's got one of the best looking girlfriends around. That's gotta count for something....right?

The Sakic not taking Jones is still bugging me. McKinnon THAT much better than Jones that you take him? You take the best guy available when the next guy in your position of need isn't close. Jones by all accounts is going to be fantastic and the Avs need help on the blue line.

Yeah, my disgust for this rumor is well documented, so I won't say too much more about it. I'd HOPE that if they do take McKinnon, it's because they already have a deal in place to bring in at least one really good defenseman. But even still, why not completely shore up the D by drafting Jones and acquiring another via trade (ie Phaneuf for Stastny)? Gah.

I'd maybe throw in a 5th rounder with the deal just for the fact that Dion would be bringing Elisha to Denver. :thumbsup

Slightly off topic but for the guys who still play, how often do you get your skates sharpened?

I read something that said after 8 hours of skating but I feel like that's only if they are sharpened perfectly. I'm assuming the guy in the back of my local sporting goods store isn't doing a professional job.

I sharpen my skates every 6-7 times out there. It's not an exact science, sometimes I sharpen them after 3 or 4 sessions and sometimes I do it after 11 or 12 sessions, but generally I try to after every 6 games or so.

Also, find a good place to do it. Your rink should be able to do it for you, and probably does a better job than your local sporting goods store. Nothing worse than a pair of poorly sharpened skates.

I get mine sharpened to a 1/2" hollow. Would never trust that to some guy at Dick's Sporting Goods.

How often do you play? With me only playing 1-2 times a week, I sharpen mine about once a month. When I'm reffing a lot, I'll usually do it twice a month, but that's just because when you're reffing you're on the ice the WHOLE time.

But it all comes down to preference and how you feel on your skates. I know guys who NEVER seem to sharpen their skates and can still fly out there, and then I also know guys who can't go a week. Do what feels good, man.

He deserves a raise based off what he's done and he's the kind of guy you want for the playoffs...but yeah not at the money someone will give him. These GM's need to look at it this way. He's scored 18 goals in 2 years. Is he worth $4mil to give me 10 goals on the off chance he might have a great playoff and help me? Sometimes these guys just click at the right time or are a product of a system. Leino is a great example. Martin Lapointe is another. Scored 27 goals in 2001 and he get's $5mil a year and only scored 25 goals the following 2 years combined.

I'm playing 2-3 times per week right now. I just remember in high school we had a guy that sharpened our skates pretty much after every game and I have no idea what I did during youth hockey :lol

Thanks for the advice guys. Hard to believe the best place I've found for NHL talk and hockey advice is a DMB board :lol

Even Mac never got a stupid raise like that. Would have had he left during 2003 when he was a UFA. Still got more than what a guy like him was worth but he did it well here. My guess is he wouldn't have other places.

Nice :thumbsup. Again, do what feels comfortable. Based on how much you're playing, I'd suggest maybe twice a month.

And yeah, we've got a really good thing going here. Great hawkey tawk and good friendships that have formed because of it. :thumbsup

Definitely Glass.:thumbsup. Letang is looking more and more like a viable option with the McKinnon rumblings. Care for a David Jones?

Don't even joke about MAF.

Jones would probably look nice on Crosbys wing. Everything I've read and heard has the Pens wanting a pick, a d-man, and a forward for Letang. Think the Staal deal last year. But probably better because guys like Letang don't grow on trees. Add in the fact that Staal was really ever going to go to Carolina and i think a Letang deal has the makings of being big. I feel like with the right coaching, Tanger could grow into one of the best pmd in the league. He is a classic case of a guy who has the tools but is missing the tool box.

As an aside, anyone have any bold predictions for the draft? I think the pens, if a deal isnt reached by then, deal Letang. Philly moves Read for a goalie. Avs end up 'fooling' everyone and taking Jones.

TMoore4075 06-25-2013 12:27 PM

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

I would mind Letang on the Wings. He would help them out a lot. I'd give up next years first rounder but not this years. The Wings are a team that hasn't picked in the top-20 too often and in a deep draft I wouldn't give that up.
