Providing Alcohol to Minors...What would you do?
 

First off....I'm 21 and the guy in this situation is 20, but 21 in 3 months....

Last night a group of us went out to the mariners game and had some beers prior to the game...During the game, I had a couple beers and me and my friend were standing in the walkway area watching the game trying to decide if we should go smoke or watch Griffey at bat...Then my buddy asks for a sip of my drink....I casually looked around (annoyed that he asked anyways) and said alright whatever....literally before he could even give the beer back, 2 alcohol enforcement people show up in yellow t shirts right behind us out of nowhere!

They took down our information and a Seattle police officer shows up and you could tell when he showed up that he was a chill guy. He talks to my friend and says that he might get something in the mail but at no point was I talked to by any of them...other then the cop asking me, you are of age right? and I just responded yup check my ID. Now...my main question is...

Has anyone had any experience with this? Do you think I will get a ticket or anything?

If I do get a ticket and it's 1,000 dollars or whatever because I did hear they get expensive, would you pay it or would you put it on your friend for being a bitch and asking you for a sip...obviously I was in the wrong to let him have a sip in the first place but it's kinda lame for him to even ask as well...

What do you guys think?

I was assuming when I clicked in here that you bought beer or liquor for some friends, to which I say is dumb. But what you did is not dumb and is actually very reasonable.

yea you could have easily been not paying attention, thought it was an of age friend that wanted a sip maybe he drank his beer, spilled it who knows

Right, at the same time, he's an idiot for asking me and putting me in that position...and I hate being that awkward buzz kill guy who is all paranoid ya know...which I guess I should have been but whatever...

A 6 year old asks for a sip of beer from his father....why is your 20 year old friend asking for a sip of your beer?

If I was the underage person in this scenario and my friend got a ticket as a result of me asking for a sip of his drink, I would offer to split it with him. It would be wrong of me to ask and wrong of him to agree so I figure 50/50 would smooth it over.

All that said, nothing has even happened to you. You don't have a ticket at the moment so it sounds like you could be freaking out over nothing. I say just chill and deal with it if something ever comes of it.

Yeah. The cop didn't but the two people in yellow t shirts did. But they never said anything to me, the cop told my friend he might get something in the mail.

You broke the law, but I see it as a fairly minor infraction. I'd fine you $187, and warn you to never do anything like that again, or a MUCH stiffer penalty will be assessed.

i wouldnt worry about the yellow guys... if the cops dont have your information than your fine. Regardless.. you could fight it in court or have your friend say he took it w.o you knowing

A different law. He would have to pay for underage consumption, while OP would have to pay for providing to a minor.

There's specifically alcohol enforcement people at games there that walk up to you and ask for your ID? Wow, that blows.

Here is the deal :

First off- serving/providing a minor (atleast here in TX) is actually a big offense and you REALLY don't want to get one of those. They will take you to jail for it here.

Second, what both of you did was stupid and honestly, you are both adults and you both knew the consequences so, if you get tickets, you pay for your ticket and he pays for his. In the future you both need to not be retarded and give alcohol to people underage or drink in public underage especially at a place you actively know there are police at.

Third, you are probably fine and not going to get a ticket. The cop probably knew it was going to get you in huge trouble and the guy was only 3 months away from being 21 and he didn't look wasted or anything and neither did you (I am assuming) so he probably said screw it and the paperwork. I think the cop just said you may get a ticket in the mail to scare you both from being dumbasses again. Honestly, it would be a hard case now for anyone to win in court since the cop didn't do anything at the scene. Also, as long as you didn't say yes I gave it to him in front of three witnesses, how do they prove you gave it to him. Without that proof they can't do anything to you.
