Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
I love metal. Bear in mind, im also someone whos top 10 fave bands list is dominated by people like tori amos, pink floyd, elton john, and dmb. But i love metal, from old school Metallica (Lighting > Puppets > Justice make one of the best album runs out there, Puppets being one of metal's, and rock in general's, defining albums) and even older school Black Sabbath (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a perfect album), to new school stuff like Opeth, Immortal, and older In Flames (pre-Clayman).
So who here is into the heavier side of music? I dont meet many, if any, people that can appreciate the beauty of DMB's #41 yet still delve into brilliant heavy albums like Immortal's Sons of Northern Darkness or Opeth's Deliverance. |

I thought Stefan was more into hip-hop? I couldve sworn he was the one that said it would be cool to have dre produce the next album (before they got Batson). Where does he talk about metal, if you could show me?

I'm not really with you , but I had to say Hi to Crumbo:p

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
He's probably just referring to when Stefan mentioned he'd love to have Monkey or Head from Korn play with DMB some time. I think it was in one of the Cali interviews.

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
I don't listen to a lot of metal, but there several bands that I absolutely love. Opeth being my favorite, then At the Gates, Dream Theater, and Tool are some more of my favorites, but Opeth absolutely takes the cake.
Blackwater Park is one of my favorite albums ever. |
Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
I believe it is the Stand Up Companion DVD where he is talking about how he is into heavier types of music. You are definetly right about hip hop, but I believe it is also metal.

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
I want to ammend the last statement i made, Tim Reynolds listens to Opeth and death metal/metal, and obviously he knows the beauty of #41 :p (L@LC is one of my fave versions of the tune, still)

Does Mars Volta count?
Ehhh...I used to be into Metallica, not so much anymore. The closest thing to metal I listen to(other than a few real metal songs here and there) is probably Led Zep and Jethro...and those aren't metal. |
Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
i like some in flames stuff, not a really big fan, i only listen to them because my sister is a bigger metal head than me. i like sabbath, as i lay dying, a life once lost, unearth, some the classic struggle, some norma jean, killswitch engage, bands like that. i really love to listen to metal when im in a hyper mood :monkey i also like rob zombie...although im not sure if he's heavy metal or what...

Metallica got old. I think its sad when you can prefer Load/Reload over St. Anger, but the later was horrible, and the lyrics sounded like they were written by an autistic malnurished etheopian with a heroin problem ("Look out motherfuckers here I come / Gonna make my head home / The sons of bitches tried to take my head / Tried to make me someone else instead"?? christ in a carbomb thats horrid). Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
zep had more rock in them, sabbath had more metal, but thats only if you compare them to what genres emergred from their influence. they both came from very bluesy rock scenes and went in only slightly different directions, but both were integral in creating bands such as metallica, pantera, slayer, and other earlier metal bands that furthered the trend.

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
Erich, I think we've talked briefly about this before. I was brought up on heavy music and it is still my first true love. I'm glad to see someone else on here can appreciate it as much as I do. One thing I can't stand, however, is 80s hair metal with their spandex and wailing voices.

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
Definitely not with you, but you are the first metal head Ive met who admits - at least implicitly to liking DMB. Rarely do those two go hand-in-hand.

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
I'm definitely into the heavier side of things as well. I think both Zep and Sabboth had ALOT to do with shaping the progression of heavy music. I love Pantera. I think they are the best modern metal band, period.
Now, I have been out of that scene for awhile, but this Opeth everyone is talking about has peaked my interest. Gonna have to check em out. |

For me, its classic metal (sabbath) > early 80s speed/thrash (metallica/slayer/venom/mercyful fate) > [reel missing] > 90s death/black metal and forward. the 80s for metal was just an embrassing time. |

Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
And I have to say, I'm not a fan of Metallica by any means, but Jesus, Master of Puppets really is one of the best metal albums in existence.
I was a MASSIVE fan of nu-metal, but started getting out of it for heavier grindcore/metalcore/math metal stuff. Norma Jean (their first CD) is awesome, as is Dillinger Escape Plan. Zao is one of my absolute favorites. I haven't listened to much sludge other than Eyehategod, but I really like them. Dying Fetus is growing on me, too. |
Re: Im a metalhead. Who's with me?
Haste the Day, As I lay Dying, Thrice, and Norma Jean are some pretty weird metallish stuff.
But I like harder music, that what I listened to for the majority of the time before I got into DMB. mmmmm, days of System of a Down. But lately I've been listening to A LOT of smashing pumpkins. I like them tons. |
