Sometimes I feel like that word gets used here and I don't know what people mean. For me cheesy is trite or cliche for the most part. Using strong imagery to paint broad strokes about childhood friendships and the emotions they invoked/invoke now is not cheesy, it's heartfelt. Especially with the background of that song too.
This would be my definition too. Nearly every line of DYR’s verses are trite cliches...ghosts in attics, kissing girls in backseats, color of laughter, color of love.

Add in a “do yoUuUuuUu remember”...It’s bad

Dave likes DYR too much for it to disappear.

I like that it got an animation video like TSTJL.

I don't mind it as an opener because most people at the shows are not addicts like us and aren't even aware there's no opener anymore so they're not in their seats when the show starts. I get annoyed when people start filling in during the first song. I'd rather be annoyed during DYR than Seek Up, for example. DYR is a good warmup while it's still light outside.

Yeah, they just don't care about that stuff... I'm not sure they ever will. Most bands do something to honor milestone anniversaries. Especially of their best albums (*cough* maybe play BTCS in full on a tour *cough*). Not DMB though... and even though I don't like it, I kinda respect it. :lol

So if Dave actually experienced those things exactly, with his friend whom he wrote the song about, he should change them as to not be seen as trite by some?

I really don't get the DYR hate. It's a classic sounding DMB song. I do wish it was more fleshed out in a live setting, but it reminds me a bit of Crash Into Me a little with that summer vibe.

I've never agreed with the "It has to be special just for me!" mentality that lives on this site a lot. The band playing a special old song or new cover at another show doesn't take away from your enjoyment at your show. And if you care about the rarity aspect, then you're following the wrong band.

The sentiment behind the song doesn’t factor in here. An earnest, personal experience put to song does not automatically make a song good.

Someone wanted examples of the cheese, and I provided a few. I tried to be civil and not post the lyrics front to back :D

Well I never said anything about the song being good. You characterized the song as trite. I pointed out the meaning/history of the song and recognized that Dave may very well have been writing about his exact experiences. And then asked you if he should alter them to be less cheesy?

Correct, but I wasn't taking issue with that either. Idgaf what they play when I'm not there. At my shows I prefer no covers especially new ones as I'd rather them play one of the more rare songs in their own catalog. I would get more enjoyment at a show if they played JTR than if they played Sweet Emotion. At my shows I want a varied mix of songs and maybe something I have never seen before or haven't seen in a few years or something I've seen a couple of times instead of my 22nd Jimi or 13th cornbread. I'm fine hearing those songs as I like them but I would get more enjoyment if it were a song I like better or I haven't heard at half my shows.

I find it interesting that this band has endless songs and plays endless shows and people are convinced songs are swapped out for others specifically

I didn't say that. I'm saying I'd enjoy my shows more if these things happen.

a) no new covers and only 1 old one max. I want DM(B) songs at a DMB show
b) I hear more songs that I personally have in the top tier of the catalog
c) I hear songs I've seen less frequently than others.

I'd take a random EWU over DYR or Can't Stop. I don't need them to play my favorite 20 songs to enjoy myself.

Fair enough, this is not that to me. I view like Steady as We Go, If Only, as that. I found the imagery to be strong, though kissing girls in the backseat is probably the closest offender for me.

I wasn't referring to you, I see similar comments in regards to albums and live, it's pretty hard to know on albums unless someone involved with the project says so and live it's nearly impossible outside of comparing and contrasting the pre-show setlist and what is played

I find TON of meaning in DYR. That, and Virginia In The Rain, and Blue And Black Bird. They should all get played. I think people who find DYR cheesy is a minority that shouldn't be catered to.

DYR is fine. It just gets played too much and in virtually the same spot. Cut a few plays and play it in different spots and people wouldn't have much to complain about it

I’m with you on this- other than “kissing girls in the backseat” the lyrics are suggestive and visceral images that invoke a feeling of childhood. In particular I think the “color laughter/color of love” is great. DYR is a very good song that got lost in a messy album and got played a little too much at shows. Personally I even like the woos and yips, they accentuate the 2 beat in a really cool way.

I was just making a point that DYR got tons of plays in 2019 and Bismarck got, none. If that's the formula then tag in Bismarck for DYR this year. Or, ya know, just toss us a bismarck once and a while

Who created the Bismarck was dropped for DYR thing? I guess both on the album and at shows is the narrative there. Not a single shred of proof that's what happened right, I don't think.

I mean one member of the band is dead and the other was kicked out. How much does Dave, Stefan, and Carter care? I guess it comes down to that? I think they just want to play some shows.

sounds like that "quiet time after dinner" my parents would put on me and my siblings when we wanted to leave the table right after eating, but needed to stay and chit chat lol
