that clip has always made me cringe. dave looks so awkward. they're all on top of one another. and whose first instinct when hearing a song for the very first time is to get up and start dancing? i suppose they were all blasted.

I never thought he looked annoyed, just a bit on the coming off a buzz side. I'll admit, it's been a long time since I've been to a show but the dancing used to just be part and parcel of the experience. Move as the music guides you. Their first thought probably wasn't, 'oh crap, i need to be able to recount every bit of these for an epic post so i better not move.' In fact, I'll bet they were coached/encouraged a bit to react before starting the music.

Oh this absolutely had to be staged at LEAST a little bit. It was a filmed promotion for the album, so there was definitely some coaching and planning.

SMLAM has a little bit of "it". It moves, it slams as a studio track, despite how much you dislike to hear it at your show, or how many times you've heard the studio cut. These might not have been serious fans who were given a listen to this clip live, and I firmly believe their response to dance was sincere. Everyone who heard this clip for the first time in that Ants thread was overjoyed when they heard it, even the harshest critics you can find here admitted they were moving in their seat.

Looking back, this was such a record-label-trying-to-be-hip-with-the-youth-and-make-a-poor-attempt-at-viral-marketing cringe filled video.

I mean this song is still groovy - listening to the baseline isolated, you realize what a funky fun groove it is. If you don’t know now you know.

Again and Again is another song that I like studio, but don't want to ever hear live. It's also probably one of Tim's worst solos. Just seems like kind of a forced solo there.

I was thinking about the new album this morning and I don't think The Ocean and the Butterfly will be the first single from this album although I do think it will be on the final track list. I also don't think Windows will be on the album. Just hunches on my part. I could see Bismarck being the only "old" song that makes the new album, in addition to the aforementioned The Ocean and the Butterfly. Everything else will be new, or at least new to us. Do you agree?

I have no idea. I’m hoping Bismarck makes it, but we’ve heard it’s all new songs so I’m not getting my hopes up. Hopefully we get some news in the next few weeks.

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

Not putting Bismarck on the album would be criminal. Great tune.

The Fonz video makes me wish they turned the bass up during the shows, he isn't as audible as he could/should be unless it's a focal point of the show on him.

kenticus 05-14-2021 12:01 PM

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

Bismarck just sitting on the shelf the past few years is utterly silly.....song is clearly fully written and done, not like it’s evolved whilst they toured it so.......

I have to hope/imagine they come to their senses and that it makes it into the list of tunes for this album. Or maybe they do the album as all new and a bonus disc of stuff like Bismarck? Am I being too optimistic/wishful? You bet I am!

If I had a gd nickel for every time this sentence/sentiment was typed on the boards since ~2006..........

Exactly the opposite of what people commented on Twitter.

I am with you.

I've always felt that Stefan is probably the most underrated member of the band. His bass lines are always interesting...I'm enjoying the videos he's put out that show off what he's doing.

I like that fans that hung out outside of a recording studio to meet the band aren't "serious" enough because they danced to a new song.

He pretty much is. Too many dumbasses get caught up in disagreeing with his politics and throw that pathetic/myopic jab about being lucky to go along for the ride. He's a dedicated musician that brings it every night.

I also love the asshats that bring up Victor Wooten as a better bassist...you know, only one of the best bassists to ever live. Victor knows Fonz is for real...so do all of the Flecktones and every artist/musician that's ever sat in with the band. Carter and Fonz are one of the best rhythm sections of the last 30 years. Very few might equal, but I can't think of any that are objectively "better" in popular music.

SMLAM is a great album song. Horrible live song though

It’s the structure of the song that doesn’t leave any space for improvisation

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

Not all songs need improvisation....those three minutes serve their point. SMLAM most likely suffers from the hard & fast approach this band has leaned towards for quite sometime. Yes, it’s that way to begin with, but upping it the slightest notch in the live setting leaves zero breathing room. To the previous point, classic DMB allowed for space in the musical structure, easily allowing for an instrument to weave its solo through the melody.

[emoji3] of course everyone has its own opinion.
To me, actually, DMB is made by 6 amazing musicians + Fonz

That is a really stupid opinion.

Fonz joined one of the biggest American rock bands of the last 20+ years at the age of 16 and is somehow the least talented...
What’s up with these boards lately? Fonz has no talent, Nirvana doesn’t belong in the Rock Hall...?

You can have an opinion, but sometimes it’s flat out incorrect.

Correction: Fonz was a founding member of what would become the biggest American rock band (from what I recall, in the 2000's, only the Rolling Stones sold more tickets). Again, at the age of 16. To put that in perspective, at the time, Carter was twice his age and already well-established in Charlottesville.

Xcacel 05-15-2021 10:04 AM

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

Ok, I should have posted that in the unpopular opinion thread.

I am not saying that Fonz is bad, on absolute terms.

But.. apart from Dave and Carter, Tim is an amazing guitarist, Coffin is a sax virtuoso, Rashawn has an incredible musicality and Buddy... is also very impressive to me.

So at the end...

Ah yes, people dogging Fonz because they don't know what the role of the Bass player in a band is. An all time antsmarching classic.

I don't necessarily disagree with the comment and I think it makes sense when explained. He was picked to be part of the band because he was a young bass playing prodigy, he's an absolutely great player and writer and has come up with the foundation of some of the biggest fan favorite songs. I get how saying "least talented" could be perceived as a slight but the poster is just saying relative to the others. The only band member I'd say he was hands down more talented than was Boyd, not a knock on Stefan but a compliment to the band as a whole.

Obviously they all have different skill sets but I don't think it's hard to tell strengths and weaknesses of a group, compare Carter to Boyd for example.
