Instigator is the stupidest penalty in the game. Can't believe they got the power play for that. It's not a suspendable hit or anything, but Scott absolutely did the right thing on that and we get the penalty. Stupid.

Hawks had a couple of good shifts early, but giving up all of the PP's definitely turned the momentum. Couldn't get any momentum going. A bad period but it's unfortunate that the PP that scores comes off a ridiculously bad no-call on that Engelland hit.

Great work by John Scott, though. Get out there and pound the guy.

A hit like that, for leaving the feet and taking a high shot at a guy's head...that's a 5-minute major. It's not like Kruger could do anything. He was already being checked into the boards!

Agreed, but it just should have been SOMETHING. His stick was in the air and he took his elbows to Kruger's head. The Pens going to the PP on that was ridiculous.

Hawks are just out of sorts tonight. Credit to the Pens, who are playing extremely good hockey. Malkin and Fleury are the best players on the ice tonight.

Unfortunately the Hawks have played very poorly against one of the most banged up blue lines in the league.

Hell of a 3rd period. That's what that whole game should have been.

Fleury, if absolutely nothing else, is as clutch as it gets between the pipes.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

How about malkin, 15 points in last 6 games. now has 39 points to tie for the league lead, BUT he has only played 27 games, about 6 less than everyone else in the top ten.

Bron Yr Aur 12-20-2011 07:10 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Fleury was outstanding. Pens played a very solid game, and it's pretty impressive what they are doing with the injuries on defense.

Still, they were gifted a PP from the refs in the first that really should've been 5 minutes the other way. That's a shame.

lockman21 12-20-2011 07:13 PM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

At the same time, the Hawks made lots of mistakes. Played a lot of bad hockey that first 40 minutes.

Obviously two of the top teams in the NHL. Bylsma is a hell of a coach, and the skill goes really step it up for him. Malkin is impressive to say the least.

This final would be fun as hell, but at the same time I would be freaking out for a solid couple weeks. I don't know if I could handle it :lol

My only problem with the Pens is the headshots taken tonight. Two hits where players are leaving their skates. Completely uncalled for, and Shanahan will probably be reviewing them both.

It was a really fun game to watch. Bylsma is a fantastic coach, he really is. For the Pens to play such solid defense without Letang, without Michalek, without Martin. That's impressive.

It's also pretty frightening that a team has a legitimate claim on perhaps the two best scorers in the league.

Malkin healthy is a scary thing for the opposition. Last time he was fully healthy (like he is now) he dropped 113 points and followed that up with 36 in the playoffs (the most ever by someone not named Gretzky or Lemieux).

The sad thing is if Engelland would've just stayed low, he could've delivered a sweet check.

Exactly. I think three games was warranted.

Meh. I dont have too much an issue with 3 games, i just wish shanny was little more consistent with his rulings

It's kind of tough to be completely consistent though, considering everything that's taken into account. The penalty itself, injuries on the play, prior history of supplemental discipline, etc.

“There’s been fighting in hockey for a long time. Guys aren’t going to do stupid things like that if they’re going to have to answer the bell.” - Toews when talking about the hits to Kruger and Seabrook. If the instigator penalty were gone and John Scott were able to go beat the shit out of Engleland for that hit unpenalized, I think it would lessen some of the hits like this. Regardless, the instigator is a stupid penalty.
