I found that funny as well, and that was what got me to post it even before I read the rest of the article :lol

Yeah I didn't like that either. A lot of people thought he should sign elsewhere or someone would.

The rest was spot on I think. You sign an up and coming player like Kesler or Penner for a bigger number then they are worth and hope it works out. Teams will find it harder to match for an unproven than they would a Stamkos. Plus the team tendering the offer sheet might find it easier to pay $4mil for a player rather than 11mil. Also a good point on the floor. Since you have to spend $48mil this year you aren't likely to let a bigger salary go.

Two opposite examples of how offer sheets can play out. And that min $48mil does add the need for some more strategical thinking, plus I think it will hopefully keep a more even playing field... hopefully.

Obviously two different ends of the spectrum. Just using Penner as another example. He was signed for the potential side of things. People thought more of him then than they do now.

Penner certainly has the tools to play above where he was playing this past year.

I was thinking of that, but I really only watched him on a regular basis last year, so I was just trying to be nice :)

Yes. They play hockey in the west. I know Chicago has a team. I've heard there are even teams in St. Louis and Dallas. That's probably about as far as it goes. Couldn't fathom more....

Imagine if the league was ever dumb enough to put a team in like Arizona. That'd be hilarious.

Dean Lombardi was on the radio yesterday, good chat about RFAs. As an aside, they had to talk about something else because he refused to comment on the Ryan Smyth / Edmonton Oilers thing :lol

Anyway, he is a bit agitated that he is having to fork out a whack of cash for Doughty, at the age of 21, because 'you don't really know what you're paying for'. To paraphrase, he said the draft is a crapshoot, and now having to guess how Doughty will be playing over the next several years is another crapshoot, albeit now its an expensive crapshoot.

Which I find curious since he has already been nominated for a Norris. I mean you don't know 100%, but you should have a really, really good idea what he is worth. And if you dont' like it, let him walk and let some other team take their chances.

The team is actually in Glendale, which makes the whole thing even more ludicrous. What a joke! If my municipality was pumping in $25mill worth of tax money I'd be having a conniption.

Wow, if I was Doughty I'd be pissed by Lombardi's comments. "You don't really know what you're paying for", what a douchey thing to say.

Douchy, yes. Also a bit true. There are always kids who will flame out quick and it's a lot of money to risk on uncertainties

What would be funny if the league moved a team from Winnipeg to the desert and then it didn't work there they move that team to Quebec where a team left 16 years ago... Sadly we are inching closer and closer to that reality.

edit: by sad I don't mean sad the'd be leaving the desert just said it would take all that to get back to Quebec City.

Vinny Prospal signs 1 year deal with Columbus.

Makes me very sad to see Vinny go. You can tell he brought a lot of heart to the game. I am going to miss his goal celebrations, he was always so happy.

Speaking of the Jets, well the first ones, reported Kris Draper will announce his retirement as early as tomorrow. Not a bad career for someone who was picked up for $1 off waivers. 4 Cups, 2 more Finals, OT SC Finals goal and Selke Trophy. And was involved in launching one of the best, and bloodiest, sports rivalries ever. I wanted to throw up looking at his face in 96 but that lead to March 26th which lead to a Cup and then some.

HA. He still hasn't talked to him. I can understand a little but it's been 15 years. Lemieux was from a different time when you felt you didn't have to appologize for stuff. I think people overreact now with stuff but there are certain times where you should apologize. But had he said he was sorry the blood bath wouldn't have been nearly as fun.
