I remember a few years ago Ozzie saying he'd love to just be the Tigers bullpen catcher. What a perfect gig that would be for a retired goalie. |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
It baffles me that some people think Chris Osgood does not belong in the Hall, IMO.

Stalberg resigned and the Hawks already said Campoli ain't coming back.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Osgood playing on great teams doesn't make him a HOF'er. How many All-Star games was he in? How many Vezina trophies?
He won games with great teams in front of him. Was he a winner? Yes. Was he PERSONALLY good enough to be classified as a HOF'er? No, IMO. |

So Stamkos isn't a Flyer? So much for the house in Essington baloney.

Osgood is a tough call, and I see both sides. Sure, he wasn't as individually talented as, say, Brodeur, Roy, or Hasek. But then again, hockey players are often made great IN PART because of the players they played with. Like I said a few posts prior, the individual is completely de-emphasized in hockey. Would many of the current HOF'ers be where they were if they weren't surrounded by good players? Stats aren't everything, but here's Osgood's final numbers if anyone's interested. You can't argue with many of them: - 10th all time in wins - 3 Stanley Cups (two as starter) - Named to 3 All Star games (sat out 1 because of injury) - 401-216 record - 2.49 GAA - .905 SV - 50 shutouts He was never the "star" of his team, and did have his off nights (who didn't). But I think all things considered, Ozzie deserves a spot in the Hall. |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Just for the sake of discussion, here are HOF'er Patrick Roy's career numbers, who I picked because he's the most recent goalie selection (from Wikipedia):
- 3 Stanley Cups (all as starter) - 3 Vezina trophies - 11 all-star appearances - 4-time first team all star, two-time second - Most NHL playoff games played by a goaltender (247) (second most playoff games of all players) - Most NHL playoff wins by a goaltender (151) - Most Conn Smythe Trophy wins (3) - Most NHL playoff shutouts (23) – tied with Martin Brodeur. - First NHL goalie to play 1,000 NHL games (finished with 1029 games, later passed by Brodeur). - 551-313 record - 2.54 GAA - .910 SV - 66 shutouts FYI: Roy played 19 seasons, Osgood 17 Interesting how similar their stats are (obviously not in games played), yet how many more accolades Roy received. Go Patrick! ;) |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
3 Vezina trophies, 3 Conn Smythe, 4 time first team all star (2 second), 11 all star appearances.
Also, 10 seasons starting at least 60 games, with a couple in the upper 60s. Roy was lightyears ahead of Osgood. Sure their GAA and SV% are relatively similar, but anyone who watched both play could EASILY tell you that Roy was the better goaltender. Easily. Just because his SV% is close to Roy's doesn't mean he's in the HOF. Roy was one of the best ever, Osgood isn't even one of the best of the past 10 years. |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Again, I was just posting numbers for comparison's sake, and commenting on how similar their stats were. There was no hidden agenda there.
I'm the Avs fan here, do you think I would in my right mind ever concede that Osgood was even close to Patrick? :lol ;) |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
But even with Patrick better, I still think Ozzie had a HOF-worthy career. Will he get in? That's questionable; there will be a lot of worthy candidates when he is eligible, and you just never know who will make the cut. But is it HOF worthy? I think so.

Just to have a counter-argument to the article Chris posted earlier regarding Chris Osgood:
http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...-hall-of-famer BTW I need to apologize for saying Roy was the most recent HOF goalie. I totally forgot (and this article reminded me) that Belfour was inducted this year. |

Stamkos was actually talking about all the offer sheet rumors yesterday. He said he got texts from people who photoshopped his face with Phil Kessel's body when he got traded to the Leafs. People actually believed it. |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Just don't get why more people aren't up in arms about it. Anyway.
You know what I've never understood either about the Hall of Fame? That it's a hall of FAME, not a hall of HIGH STATISTICAL NUMBERS. Always think of Paul Henderson because of this. Wildly popular, scored perhaps the biggest goal of all time, but had a relatively crappy career. But he was really, really famous because of the goal. Shouldn't he be in the hall of FAME? |
