The amount is pretty reasonable considering some were saying he could make as much as 10 mil. I've said multiple times here when he was playing for the Avs that what I loved most about him was his work ethic. He's always going. Laviolette loves guys like that.

And on a team that already has Forsberg, Johnansen, and Arvidsen? Daaaang.

and making the Habs look like idiots. The Canes GM already came out and said his off season just got easier because he doesnt have to negotiate a contract all summer and the Habs now have potential salary tied up for possibly 7 days to then not get the player :lol

And with Lee re-upping in NYI, that's pretty much all the big UFA forwards, right?

Yup, it is the RFA's that will get tricky I think now. Marner, Laine, Rantanen, Conner, Point and Boesser being the obvious guys who are due for a big payday. Binnington, as well should be rewarded but I am not sure how much or how long a team is going to pay for a guy who has exactly 50 games total in his NHL career considering he will be 26 years old in a little over a week.

Another 1-year deal at 5 mil. Interesting.

Aaaaaand there go the goalies.

Lehner to CHI
Mrazek back to CAR
Varlamov to NYI

Wonder what this means for Crawford. I know it's a 1-year deal, but 11 million is a lot to tie up in your goaltenders.

Wow Nazem Kadri to the Avs for Tyson Barrie. Matty your team is shaking it up. I know you liked Barrie. Is this trade as big a surprise as it seems? What do the Avs need Kadri for?

My thoughts exactly when I saw the news :lol

Signed Saint Petr today, too.

CBS Sports Network is doing a ‘Celebrity Home Game’ and it’s theme is ex NHL hockey enforcers

Lineup includes Asham, May, Barnaby, Konopka & Favorito

Nothing exciting - but very very random & is a much better idea in theory than execution

Avs have been shopping Barrie for a while. A couple reasons: his contract is up after this season, and they have a wealth of young up and comers. Girard, Makar, Zadorov, Byram, Timmins (and those are just the d-men!) are all going to come off ELCs soon and when they do, you don’t want to have an aging Barrie on your books making 9 mil a year. So many teams make that mistake and I’m glad Sakic didn’t.

Meanwhile, secondary scoring has been their Achilles heel and they haven’t been able to replace Duchene’s production. In Kadri they get a proven scorer who plays a 200 foot game and has a nasty streak (also something they could use more of up front). In addition, he’s on a very team friendly contract (4.5 mil x 3). If he can reign in his attitude (and I think getting out of Toronto could help with that), he will be the PERFECT fit. Joe often acquires players not for how they play, but how they COULD play. This is another example of that.

The Kerfoot inclusion stings a bit, but I imagine they had to sweeten the pot with Toronto knowing they only get Barrie for a season. With their cap issues they will have a hard time re-signing him. But even so, of all the Avs young guys who I’m comfortable losing, it’s him. Just seems to be missing something that would take him to the next level, and I think Joe sees that too. His production is easily made up by Kadri, not to mention Donskoi who they also acquired.

Very, very pleased with this trade.

What I love most about what the Avs did yesterday is they got better TODAY without setting themselves up for problems in the future. In Joe I Trust.

Blues signed Binnington for 2 years at 4.4 million a year. Short term protects the Blues if he's a one-hit wonder, and the deal takes Binnington right to his UFA years where he can earn himself a monster contract if he keeps up his level of play.

Looks like we will basically have the same roster next year with the likely exception of Pat Maroon.

Outside of a managerial and front office shakeup has Edmonton does anything to better that team except swap for a new goalie and resign Chiasson? That franchise is a disaster.

I don't believe he will get offer-sheeted (offer-shat?), but I feel I'd be pretty nervous as a Leafs fan going forward. Just so much salary locked up in just a few players that they're really going to have to manage things carefully. I mean, they got their guy Barrie for this year (and really, it was a great transaction for them), but they're going to find themselves in the exact same, if not worse, situation next year when his contract is up and he will be due a pretty significant raise. I'm not trying to be the harbinger of gloom and doom for Leafs fans, but it's a reality and I'll be very interested to see how they manage it. Reminiscent of the Hawks of a few years ago.

Great bridge deal to see if he's the real deal. Avs similarly signed Burakovsky to a 1-year deal at 3.25. If it doesn't work out, he walks without them having given up much. As for Binnington, what a great story and I sincerely hope he can keep that forward momentum.

Nope. Holland has obviously been one of the most successful GMs in recent memory and Dave Tippett is a veteran coach who honestly got more out of a few Coyotes teams than others would have been able to, but is it enough? Signing Koskinen to a big deal feels premature and Mike Smith is not an upgrade at this stage of his career. But even so, this team has the talent at every position to be effective under the right leadership. You'd better believe Holland is working the phone to undo some of the damage done by his predecessors (ahem, Milan Lucic's contract).

Meanwhile, very pleased with the Avs' offseason. They did great during free agency and in getting a great player on a team-friendly contract for Barrie.

They've also re-signed their RFAs (Zadorov, Compher) to great deals and basically have their core locked up. They still have 16 mil in cap space with only Rantanen remaining; so even signing him for 8-9 mil per will leave them sitting in a great position. If they do, he'll be the only one on the team (including MacKinnon) making more than 6.5 mil. The next contract that is up is Landy's in 2021.

So pumped about the way Joe Sakic is constructing this team.

Ron Francis named GM of the Seattle team. I have a feeling his job is going to be a LOT harder than McPhee's when he came into Vegas. GMs aren't gonna let him walk all over them like George did. :lol

The Avs sure do look poised to do some damage next year. I like the forward depth they’ve added and I look forward to watching Andre next year. I assume the plan is Burakovsky and Kadri on the second line? That’s intriguing, to say the least

Agreed. That’s not to say Mcphee didn’t do a great job, but without doubt other GMs are going to be far more prepared for Francis.

I’ll add that I’m also generally pleased with my team’s off season moves. I question the scoring ability of the third line a little bit now that Connolly and Burakovsky have left, but as long as each of Eller, Panik, and Hagelin are in the 13-16 range, they should be ok. I actually really like the Gudas add. It gives some much needed depth while not blocking Jensen from developing into what they paid him for. The Vrana deal was smart for both sides. I think the Caps line up well and are likely still the team to beat in the Metro.

Yeah, Kadri will definitely be 2C and Burakovsky will have every chance to play wing on that line (probably opposite Jost). I have a feeling though that Burakovsky will be a short-term signing rather than long - simply because of some of the great prospects coming through the Avs' pipeline - but hopefully he can give the Avs some good production while he's there and parlay that into a lucrative contract elsewhere. And who knows, maybe he becomes indispensable and they end up keeping him?!

Oh yeah, McPhee did a GREAT job... much to the discredit of a few other GMs :lol

As for the Caps, it feels like they got a little older this offseason, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if those veteran players don't end up blocking the development of young guys. Looking forward to seeing how Vrana develops.

barbogast 07-19-2019 08:59 AM

Re: The NHL Thread: Gloria!

I’m hoping they’ve got a monster in Vrana. I’ve been excited about him. I agree the Caps probably got older but I don’t think they’re *too* old. I’ve read some writers talk about the Caps’ aging top six. I don’t really buy that, other than Ovie and, to a lesser extent, Backstrom. Oshie is a bit of a wild card considering how hard he plays the game. But Kuz, Wilson, and Vrana are all bonafide top six guys who are barely even in their primes yet.
