Rutherford revealed today that Kessel’s been asking for a trade going back to last season and has wanted to go to the Coyotes all along. Apparently wants to play under Tocchet again.

I knew it was coming, and i think phil wanted az because of Tocchet. Dude had 80 points last year, not easy to replace but cap space is the name of the game now and it give pens some flexibility. End of the day it looks like this:
July 1st, 2015: Penguins trade Kapanen, Harrington and a 1st for Kessel (essentially)
June 12th, 2016: Penguins win cup #1
June 11th, 2017: Penguins win cup #2
June 29th, 2019: Penguins trade Kessel for POJ (1st rounder) and Galchenyuk (more valuable than Kapanen and Harrington)

I really need to emphasize that the Penguins basically got 2 cups and 4 years of Kessel for nothing. They got back more than what they gave up in 2015 for him.

I am interested to see what JR does next, because i think he makes one more splash move on D, whether it be jack johnson (most likely) or trading letang (theres been rumors).

Yeah they say Kessel has lost a step but dude was still ppg player last year. Not a superstar, but not a scrub. Nice job outlining their ROI for him.

Pens will move Johnson if they can, but the combination of his cap hit+his play last year will make it difficult.

Just saw this, not overly surprise after losing Hayden. Hawks needed to add a bit more grit to their 3rd and 4th lines - a guy who will drive the net and provide some veteran presence and much needed experience to the newer guys who have never played in a postseason game. Not a bad move IMO - in truth both his exit (which netted us the draft pick we used for DeBrincat) and his return will help the team move up - additionally, I doubt Kruger comes back so he likely fills some PK roles where he was pretty solid back then. Call it a wash in terms of the cap hit but not a bad move at all.

First thought was - THAT CHEAP? Then I did some digging and it turns out they just made a typo on the 11.6 mil cap hit.

Weird that only McDavid makes more than he does as a FWD. I know Panarin is great but he is a wing, not a center. That said, I am guessing guys who woudl likely command more than Panarin (Crosby, Kane, Toews, Malkin, Benn, Stamkos, etc, etc) were probably locked up long before the AAV of contracts skyrocketed.

Interesting move by NYR - with him, Kakko and Trouba the Metro just got a helluva lot more interesting for next season! Teams in the Atlantic or Pacific are likely happy he didn't sign there because the Metro and the Central are both going to be a bitch again!

Would be nice to see him go out with a cup win. Guy has been one of the best in the business for a long time now and he deserves it. I know he came close in 2014 but anyone who was paying attention knew whomever won that WC final between Chicago and LA was going to win the cup barring some dreadful upset, Kings and Hawks both had much better teams than the blueshirts that year.

I have never been a big Simmonds fan as he is not great 5 on 5 and largely a 3rd or 4th line guy now. He should help that PP though but I am not sure that warrants 5 mil a year for a guy who scored 30 points last season and was certainly no help to Nashville in the playoffs. Oh well, just another reason to hate the devils! :lol

If Aho ends up leaving the Canes, they will receive MTL's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounders in the next draft.

The crappy thing about offer sheets is they can potentially raise the market value for other RFAs who need to be signed (tricky for a team like the Avs that have a handful), but this one is... surprisingly reasonable.
