Not only has the Metro division been the toughest division in hockey for the last 5+ years or so, it's now about to add Kakko & Hughes

To break it down after all trades:

Jets got: Hayes for 3 months and Pionk

Rangers got: Lemieux and Trouba.

I would say that is a steel for the Rangers.

I don’t know, I think adding a proven young defenseman (he’s what, 25-26?) who can move the puck is exactly the type of player a rebuilding Rangers squad could use. I think it’s a brilliant deal.

It’s not, but a couple things. One, it’s much easier to swallow moving out the 20th overall pick when you own the 2nd. The rangers are gonna get a game changer at the draft this year. That’s not to say a 20th pick couldn’t pan out also, but look what you get in return. Trouba is a major upgrade from Pionk. A proven young player who the Rangers should reasonably expect many productive years from. So while 20th picks are nice, proven young NHL level defenseman are even better, as that 20th pick may very well become nothing.

Just looked it up. Trouba is 25 AND he’s a rightie? Yep, it’s a great deal for the Rangers

The metropolitan division is going to be insane. RIP Penguins? I’m curious how they plan to keep up :lol

Tongue-in-cheek tone often doesn’t come across in the written word unfortunately. What I meant by my comment is that usually a rebuilding team doesn’t trade away a 1st for a guy who will have to be re-signed after this season. HOWEVER, he’s only an RFA and you have to think that with what the Rangers are putting together he’ll want to stay.

Trouba is top pair good. If they can hang on to him (and I think they can), the result of this trade will be a huge win for the Rags. Way more so than that 20th pick + a depth defenseman.

Defensive game needs work but the kid is coming off his first full year in which he still got 26 points so there is some potential there for growth.

Yup, Metro will be a bear again, Central too - those are the toughest divisions in hockey easy right now. No surprise the past 11 cups have been won by a team from either of those divisions.

That contract is looking more and more like an albatross every day, he just is not that good. $3,250,000 cap hit for a guy that put up 13 points in 82 games with a -4 rating and too many penalties is going to be very tough to move unless the Pens eat about half the contract to move him. I know he plays a lot of minutes but he is just not worth what they are paying him and he is 32 so the room for growth and development is pretty much tapped out.

Good point on the Kings, I am exhausted man - long night and work at 6am, just got home. As for the bruins, honestly, who cares about them - they are probably the most talented collection of choke artists in the NHL! :lol

Course a year and a week ago I would likely have said that about the Caps so who knows man! :)

Also Barbs, so much for this great parity experiment (aka the cap) lets go back to 2009 and examine the winners

2009 - Pens
2010 - Hawks
2011 - Bruins
2012 - Kings
2013 - Hawks
2014 - Kings
2015 - Hawks
2016 - Pens
2017 - Pens
2018 - Caps
2019 - Blues

So 8 of the past 11 champs were the Pens, Hawks or Kings and the other 3 (Blues, Caps, Bruins were 1 off's) so how's that for parity! :lol

Parity isn't just about the champion. It's teams playing for it. I'd argue that LV, STL, SJ, CBJ, NSH, DAL, etc are small(er) market teams outside the norm.

Agree with this. We're seeing perennial bottom-15 teams making the playoffs, cusp teams getting in and doing damage, teams that have never won a Cup all of a sudden going the distance. It's pretty cool.

And what the list of recent past winners also highlights is the ebbs and flows of teams in the salary cap era. Teams like the Hawks, Kings, and Pens draft and sign well, building Cup contenders that do well for a period of time, stars get signed to monster contracts, and then comes the inevitable dip when those contracts catch up to them. Sure enough, we see the Hawks and Kings not even making the playoffs, and the Pens trending down. Meanwhile, other teams are rising, and they will most likely follow the same pattern. It's fascinating to watch and I'm interested to see if managers try to adjust the way they build their teams accordingly, or if they lean into it and just accept that they'll have "windows" to win and try to strike hard during those peaks before they dip into a valley.

Is this the first time an interim coach is up for the Jack Adams? Awesome.

Still have to pay him though…

I know Pionk got some press for that goal earlier this year, but he sucks. Maybe he'll get better with a better team but from the Jets perspective they miss out on Trouba for a year since they weren't going to sign him and get a 20 back.

Except Wilson was two million cheaper and the deal was shorter. Plus I think Wilson is the more dynamic player and I’d rather have him on my team. Next year will be an interesting one for Wilson. If he can replicate the year he just had, his 5 million cap hit doesn’t seem very ridiculous anymore

With all of this money being thrown about all crazy-like, I'm really nervous as to what Marner is going to get. Could mean 40% of the Leafs cap going to 3 players.
