I heard the "Moose" rumour the day the team was sold, which doesn't strike me as terribly good. Pretty sure it was also the name of the minor league team that played in Manitoba after the Jets left, but I'd also heard that the NHL was more than willing to make the Jets franchise name available to the franchise if they wanted (I'm not sure how that works, except to speculate that the NHL owns the copyrights to all franchise names, past and current, or something to that effect).

I'd prefer the Jets name comes back, although it wasn't the best the first time around, either. Polar Bears really doesn't work for me (and would certainly look ridiculous for their one season in the Southeast Division). Something evoking images of snow would probably work pretty well--the Winnipeg Blizzard (which was at one time the name of Buffalo's Major Indoor Soccer League team) wouldn't be bad.

Gonna have to trade someone in the 4M - 6M range. Probably Carter as everyone knows. I'd be fine with that. They're gonna have to overpay for Bryzgalov either way.... (Reminds me of when they had to make a splash in 06-07 and signed Briere. Gonna have to overpay. But at the same time, they need it. (It being a goalie..)

Yeah it sure is. But the Flyers really need a goalie and I'd say Bryz is definitely a top 10 goalie in the league.

Yeah that would be money well spent for the Flyers. Although recently in this league it seems goalies can change extremely quickly. That'd be a tough contract to swallow if he lost it

So I am on my phone at work so sorry for asking questions I could probably easily find my own, but how much space do the Flyers have? I know it's not a lot. And also did the cap go up yet this season?

Not sure about how much cap room the flyers have but the cap is definitely going up for next year.

I would go so far as to say top 5. He has gone largely unnoticed in Phoenix, but has been one of the most consistently excellent goalies the past two seasons, rarely having a bad game while playing for an average team.

I think top 5 is a bit of a stretch right now with guys like Thomas, Rinne, Luongo, Miller, and Lundqvist all ahead of him. But he definitely has a shot at cracking that top 5 very soon.

See, and last season I wouldn't put him below Miller, and maybe on par with Lundqvist. Very similar to Henrik, he had the burden of basically carrying an average team. The Rangers don't make the playoffs without Lundqvist, and the Yotes don't either without Bryzgalov. I'd be interested to see him on a bigger stage, where he'll be noticed for how good he really is.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized how kinda silly it is to argue top 5 or top 10. I started it, my bad. I think we can both agree he's an elite NHL goaltender, and that's probably good enough.

It'll be intersting to see how he reacts to playing in a bigger market. He'll have a lot more pressure on him to win and a lot of people will start questioning him right away if he has a slow start for them.

The more important question to ask is if in all your mids, Ilya Bryzgalov is a Top 250 player? I say no.

Friend of a friend works at 670 The Score, sports radio here in Chicago. Gretzky was on today to talk about his kid being drafted by the Cubs. Check out this guys status:

"OK...Wayne Gretzky just emailed me a "Thank You" for having him on. He signed it "99". Awesome."

Don't think the Flyers will have to overpay for Bryz. I'm not sure of the market for him or any goalies making that much in this offseason.

Remember he did go 0-4 in the playoffs this year. Overpaying him or not, some key parts of the Flyers will have to go elsewhere.

I didn't say that. I'm not discounting him as a great goalie. We just have yet to see him on a team that could be a threat to go deep in the playoffs. A team with expectations. Could decrease his value a little and be beneficial for a team like the Flyers who will be up against the Cap.

Not completely his fault. It could also be pointed out that he played well for Anaheim during their runs when called upon.

He would definitely be an upgrade, and something Philly needs to address. He's an elite goalie in his prime, and hopefully if signed he won't fall victim to the Flyers goalie curse.

Bryzgalov should be paid around the same amount that Lundqvist makes. I think he singed something around six years/40 million.

What's more interesting, is where does Phoenix go from here? Jason LaBarbera is the slated #1 for next year, as of now.

I was thinking the exact same thing. LaBarbera has played well in a backup role, but is unproven as a starter. Do they take a chance with him, also factoring in the money they'd save? Given their financial situation, they don't have a lot to spend on a free agent (especially with Yandle needing a new contract), but someone like Johan Hedberg or Ty Conklin would be interesting options to explore as a split-time situation with LaBarbera.

the Flyers have about 400k right now, so probably a few more dollars after the cap goes up. they only have 18 guys on the roster, so I think even if they don't sign Bryz, people will still go.
