Will dmb leave a legacy like Grateful Dead?
 

I understand that dmb and the grateful dead are compleatly different musically it's like apples and oranges, but I find myself comparing dmb and the grateful dead in other ways. Both the bands jam they jam completly different but they both jam. Both bands have epic shows. For example I listened to 12/31/96 and it reminded me a lot of the deads famous 12/31/78 show. Both shows on New Years and both show were in home town states. So so many other epic show for both bands multiple night runs mutible years in msg, Giants staudiom, soldier field and alpine Vally just to name a few. Both bands have dedicated fans that see many many shows a year. Yes, deadheads are defently alot more dedicated than dmb fans but I would like to think that dmb still has dedicated fans and probably have more hardcores than 75% of other acts. I would like to think that when dmb is done that they will be legends. Hopefully some kid that's not even born yet will get into collage and listen to dmb tapes and watch DVDs and bootlegs and keep dmb alive. Hopefully that kid would say damn I wish I could have seen dmb live damn they were so good. Just like I'm doing now with the grateful dead. What are yalls thoughts?

General public a decade or two from now will regard DMB as a pop radio band.

Hell, even today people ask me why I go to more than one show a year. The non-fan has no idea that DMB is more of a live act.

No, it's not a visible enough/interesting enough in it's own right fanbase. Phish probably will though

Yes, phish is very much like the dead but the reason I'm comparing dmb to the dead is because musicly dmb is not like the dead. They started a whole new thing musicly just like the dead did in the 60's

yeah, not at all. i get you love DMB, but youre speaking from your heart on this.

DMB is important to us, but lets stop acting like they're as big and influential as the dead.

Yeah all I'm tying to say is that dmb was a band that played so hard with an acoustic gutair a sax and a voilin and an powerful drummer and some how it worked.:thumbsup

Pre-Everday I'd say this legacy comparison would be more valid. They changed the course of their history post LWS.

Visited Rock & Roll HOF last summer, and damn its a travesty they aren't there yet considering some of the names that are. They aren't transformative to music, but are complete masters of the live stage. Without any doubt they are in that league.

They certainly did something unique and great. That's why we all love them.

I just don't think many bands took up the reins and followed that formula. The DMB legacy is probably stuff like Mraz, Johnson, Mayer, Day, BrOAR and such.

Do you know when eligibility starts? Chili Peppers inducted '13 and Green Day this year. Feel like they started around 1990 as well and are still active bands

25 years after your debut album, I believe. R2T was '93, so that would put DMB in the '18 class.

Just a preface that I consider The Grateful Dead defunct after 1995. It's almost apples and oranges. I know that in the Vince years that something set lists were written for him so that he knew what to play, but more often than not they actually set maybe a couple of songs (that weren't played the previous night) and then flowed from there.

The grateful deads legacy as much about the cultural movement and their embodying the times they lived in as it was about the actual music.

DMB hasn't had anything like this at all. DMBs music though will continue to live on though, I think some of it is timeless and will always be played when people are reliving the last 20 years musically.

Not sure the culture that DMB embodies will be looked upon with nostalgia in 20 years. :lol

Even if DMB's legacy isn't as monumental as the Grateful Dead's, I have to think they will be remembered somewhat similarly. As the #1 touring act in America for the past 20 years, the only band to release 6 consecutive albums to reach #1 on Billboard, and having one of the most dedicated fan bases in music, I highly doubt DMB will be remembered as artists like OAR and Jason Mraz. It's just hard to see, and frankly wouldn't be fair.
