Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Raymond was avoiding a check, and Marchand was initiating a check...

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
The thing is clipping is described as a hit below the knees of an opposing player. It's a 5 minute penalty and a game misconduct. Would Raymond's hit be classified as that as well?

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
I think that it doesn't apply if you are avoiding a check. Raymond was trying to avoid a check where Marchand was initiating a check. That's just what I think. Obviously they look like the exact same hit but the situations are completely different.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
I guess we just disagree. I don't think Marchand is initiating a check there. Salo's own momentum carried him over Marchand.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
here is the full video. Marchand make a play for the puck, in the exact same area, in the exact same way about 10 seconds before the hit, and Marchand just checks him. When I watched it the first time I was shocked to see Marchand not go down because the play is EXACTLY the same. Marchand just checks Salo and goes for the puck. 10 seconds later the exact same thing happens and instead of going for the puck, he avoids it and just takes out Salo. That's your penalty, and your suspension.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
The hit was deserving of the penalty and a suspension. Maybe 5 games is a bit much, because to me, hits to the head are a bit worse than to the knees, and they have been getting 2 games quite often it seems.
Still, it looks like Marchand sees Salo coming so he lets the puck go so that Salo plays it and he can check him. And he does so in a very dangerous manner. Pretty shitty play, IMO. |
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Marchand's hit was a cheap shot. He's a classless mother who is going to get it one day.
|
Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Marchand plays on the edge for sure. But there are quite a few guys who are dirtier than him in the league.

Did not deserve 5 games.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Marchand has a history, I believe, right? As a repeat offender he was going to get something. The hit was very dangerous. It's not a hip check at all. He takes out his legs, and everyone who knows physics, knows that Salo is going to fall on his head. It was stupid and reckless.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
Marchand had one suspension and a fine prior to this one. But look at this hit by Rene Borque which occurred 2 games after he came off a suspension and he got 5 for this. The hit was cheap but not as bad as this hit by Borque which received the same suspension. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I38dKQlTP1E

Bourque and Marchand's hits are the same IN THE SENSE THAT they were completely unnecessary.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread
I'm aware. Like I've said it's a dirty play. However I think 5 games is pretty ridiculous given that similar hits have not even been penalized, and he got the same suspension as Bourque, who was fresh off a suspension and issued a head shot.
