Anyway, Caps played a solid game one. Got the shutout. Only concern would be not generating more offense on the 4 minute power play...and that is not a huge concern. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Great game by the Caps in all facets. Power Play created great chances. Dominated puck possession on 5v5. Penalty was on point. Played a great physical game. Great way to start the series. Only one down though, 15 more to go

edit: holy smokes. He's out for the series. Woah |
Re: The NHL Thread
Hi everyone. Back from my hiatus. I'm not backreading. I feel slightly better now. Being a DC sports fan, I still expect us to blow it. I still love you all.
P.S. One person I don't love is the Flyers fan who sat over my left shoulder tonight but didn't have the guts to wear orange so instead wore a black Eagles pullover with a small Iggles logo on the left chest but also didn't shut up for the whole game. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Stephen Whyno @SWhyno 1m1 minute ago
Hakstol on Couturier: "We had to go without him for the rest of the game tonight. Won't go any further than that." I read this as he's still available Edit: nvm Flyers Nation @FlyersNation Tim Panaccio says Sean Couturier has an AC sprain and is done for the season according to #Flyers PGL... |
Re: The NHL Thread
Anchor dude on CSN just said they got word he is out for the series. Said the info came from csn Philly
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Yeah it's all over twitter. Couturier done for the season

Fucking ESPN spoiled the game score but oh well now I don't have to stay up. Stay sheet shows Mason had to have played solid. Was the Caps defense superb and that's how the Flyers only had 19 shots or did the Flyers just suck?

Good result for the Caps tonight.
Both goalies played really good. Love Tom Wilson all night, right up til and including when he took Simmonds off the ice for the game. Johannson had the best playoff game I remember him ever having. Great to see. |
Re: The NHL Thread
I love Wayne Simmonds, but that was the dumbest thing he could have done there. Tom Wilson is nothing but a dumpster fire and should be ignored.

I think Wilson is a great skater, great hands, and a total hustle guy. And yeah, loves to hit and fight. |

Arrived a short time ago at the hotel in Ohio. Listened to the game the whole way through Pennsylvania (how annoyingly long is that state). Sounds like we need to play better defense and that Luongo must have been the weak. Had to listen to the Panthers feed, which blew but was happy just to be able to listen to the game.
Really excited to have maybe stolen game 1. Need to see highlights and read up on the game as I couldn't get a feel between bad announcers, loud trucks and bickering kids. |

Not familiar with that one, but it sounds dumb too.

Re: The NHL Thread
Flyers were up 2-0 with just under two minutes. Columbus pulled their goalie. Simmonds won a puck battle in Flyers zone and aimed for the empty cage. He missed. It became icing. Columbus won the ensuing faceoff and scored from the point.
Fast forward another thirty seconds and they tied the game. We lost one point and a regulation win because of that dumb play. |

Well I didn't miss much.

not taking anything away from the Caps, they earned the win. but man, the Flyers really did everything they could to lose that game
|
Re: The NHL Thread
There were definitely moments where the Flyers got in their own way, the Simmonds incident being the most obvious one. Really stupid move by him there. I'm not defending Tom Wilson's hit as I think it was dangerous and unnecessary, but Simmonds has to know he can't retaliate like that. I do think Wilson is turning a world class pest. He's too reckless sometimes but he really gets under opponent's skin and causes them to make mistakes. The guy has a little bit of a scoring touch too on occasion.
I do think overall the Caps earned the win and their good play is more the cause of the outcome than the Flyers' bad play. The defense looked really good. Holtby looked sharp but didn't have to work all that hard. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Watched the highlights of the SJ/LA game this morning. Wow that was crazy. The Isles/Cats was crazy too. Lou gonna Lou again? I mean, it is the playoffs.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
I get what Simmonds was trying to do and appreciate it to a degree. Wilson's hit was reckless, and Simmonds was right to be upset about it. I know I would be. And Simmonds' response wasn't just about that hit in that instance, it was about future hits like that down the road. He was sending a message. I love seeing teammates stand up for each other like that.
Where he went wrong - and many of you have already articulated this - is in the timing. When you're a critical part of your team's offense and PP, you've got to put yourself in a position to help the team at the end of the game. Tangle up with Wilson, say a few words, and then save it for later. And guys, Wilson's a sly guy. I wouldn't be surprised if he was like, "wait, SIMMONDS is coming after me?? If I can get him to go with me right now, he'll be gone the rest of the game..." He knows Simmonds means a helluva lot more to his team in the final minutes of a game than he (Wilson) does to his own team in the same situation. On a related note, I like Wilson's tenacity, heart, and relative skill level for a guy his size, but dude needs to learn some control when he hits. It's cool to hit hard, but learn to keep the elbows down, feet on the ice, etc. Watch some Matt Martin video or something. It just seems like we're talking about questionable hits by him way more than we should have to. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Wow, some great games last night - always fun to watch when you have no real vested interest!
Caps played great. Killing 3 penalties in the first period gave them a ton of momentum. Holtby is great to watch (Mason played great as well) that was a good game up until the end when about 17 penalties were handed out. I think this will be a short series without Couturier though. Figured Dallas would come out of the gate playing solid and they did just that, Wild looked pathetic. Islanders sure eked that one out, that is going to be a long series. What on earth happened to LA, I saw them trade a goals in the first but then I feel asleep. Still think LA wins this series but it is going to be longer than I expected. Odd comment by the Blues coach yesterday saying he wants his team to get at least 70 hits tonight, 70 hits - that is just unrealistic and it means Chicago has the puck WAY too often. |
Re: The NHL Thread
From an article before last nights game-
Then there’s Simmonds, who trains with Capitals forwards Tom Wilson and Michael Latta during the offseason. Of Wilson, an effective agitator who told reporters earlier this week he hopes Flyers fans “hate our guts,” Simmonds laughed Thursday and replied, “I actually know [Wilson], and I’m pretty sure Flyers will hate him, if they already don’t.” Amazing hiw these guys are friends until the puck drops then can attack and fight each other during a playoff game. |

Also like the tone that was set by Schenn at the end of the game with the hit on Alzner. Mason looks confident and was seeing the puck pretty well all night which is good moving fwd. Coots being out for the rest of the series will hurt the Flyers big time on special teams and on defense but the PK was good enough even without him. Schultz came up huge with some blocked shots during the 4 min pp. |
Re: The NHL Thread
After last nights game I went home and watched highlights from 2014 Kings/Sharks series to feel better. It just made me more nervous and sad. This is not the same team anymore. :lorraine

Re: The NHL Thread
Something about San Jose in the games I've watched this year they seem to be different. I'm still expecting LA to get it cause...it's LA, same with Chicago but SJ doesn't seem to be the team we expect. Maybe that team will still show up.

Re: The NHL Thread

Simmonds was really dumb. Flyers had more than 1 bad turnover, its just that Voracek's was the one that really cost them. i think they were fairly outclassed last night. sure, they muscled up on the Caps like they do against anyone, but it didn't work. the Caps are a heavy team themselves so i don't see that being effective big offensive guns were quiet all night too |
Re: The NHL Thread
Quote:
As far as the offensive guns, the flyers only have one guy over 30 goals on the year and the offense has shown to disappear at times throughout the year, both even strength and on the PP, even in the midst of the teams hot streak. I guess my point is to have a 1 goal game for 57 mins of the game with your offense doing not much of anything vs the most dangerous offensive team in the East is at least something to hang your hat on for the rest of the series. |
Re: The NHL Thread
Pretty bummed that Girardi is out tomorrow. He was one of the best skaters for the Pens.
|
Re: The NHL Thread
Quote:
hey, i'm not saying the Flyers can't turn it around. just going by the eye test though, they didn't look to be in playoff mode in game 1...Caps had the intensity and were much more responsible with the puck and yea, holding them to 1 goal for 57 minutes on the road is pretty good as well. however, when you rarely threaten to score and your best goal scorer is taking himself off the ice in a 1 goal game just to fight someone, that's not good... San Jose for sure deeper this year. 4 solid centers down the line. Better coaching. Coach has saved Thornton's energy all year by not using him as much on PK and a result he's having a hell of a season. |

Re: The NHL Thread
This team is so bad. Let me shoot from the faceoff dot with no one in front and hope the 6'7" goalie won't make the save. 15 shots sounds like a lot both most are ones I could stop and it feels like Tampa is dominating cause most of their shots are good scoring chances. I don't know how you improve this team cause both the offense and defense is struggling.
