Blockbuster-type deals. You'll probably scoff at these, and rightfully so, but these are the types of deals Chiarelli could potentially LOOK FOR if he decided to trade Austin Matthews (I don't even need to call it the #1 pick, let's be honest). He'd be stupid to not at least try.
Cam Fowler
Mike Giordano
Brent Seabrook
Niklas Hjalmarsson
Alex Goligoski
Roman Josi
Brent Burns
Alex Pietrangelo
John Carlson
Karl Alzner

Other defensemen that may not be bona fide #1 guys, but could easily play top minutes. They could be the return in a Yakupov/Nuge deal, or part of a package for Matthews. These aren't guys that should be relied on to fix the problem (as the Oilers mistakenly tried with Andrew Ference), but will help them get there (as the Oilers should have treated Ference).
Sami Vatanen
Kevin Bieksa
Torey Krug
TJ Brodie
Zach Bogosian
Tyson Barrie
Brendan Smith
Erik Gudbranson
Dmitri Kulikov
Jake Muzzin
Jared Spurgeon
Keith Yandle
Dan Girardi
Travis Hamonic
Kevin Shattenkirk
Dan Hamhuis
Marc Staal
Johnny Boychuk

I'll follow suit and comment on the Caps players you mentioned.

First of all, thanks for throwing some love Alzy's way. In my opinion, he is one of the most overlooked players in the sport. Easily the Caps best stay at home dman.

However, I don't think the Caps will consider trading either player for a chance at Matthews. Adding a player like that to an already potent lineup does sound sexy, but the Caps have finally struck balance for first time in a very long time. They're capable enough offensively, and finally have a d core that can hang with anyone. I doubt Mac would wanna shake that up.

But I know it's all hypothetical anyway, and is all very unlikely.

I do agree with the idea that if Edmonton does indeed win the #1 pick again, they should seriously consider moving it.

And I can't go to the game tonight. :lorraine

My buddy's sports marketing class went on a field trip to the arena today and posted a picture of Eric skating around on the rink all by his lonesome. Cool, but super sad.

Pretty cool memoir of sorts he wrote here, I enjoyed reading it. I will be gone this weekend, so hopefully I can hit the last home game next week.

Straight up Shattenkirk for Matthews? No way. They'd want St. Louis's first rounder and probably a high prospect or impact roster player. Their asking price would be much more probably, but would perhaps drop if they are intent on moving him and it's time for them to step up to the draft podium (and like I said yesterday, they may decide just to keep him and still benefit from having another generational player).

I still think Edmonton will look for bigger fish. Some of the ones I mentioned in my longer post from the previous page. Shattenkirk was on my mid-range list. If they really wanted him, they could probably get a deal done for him that doesn't even include Matthews (Yakupov or Nugent-Hopkins).

Yep, with the good situation the Caps are in right now, I would be very surprised to see a deal go down with them and Edmonton.

I'll say again, I think these are all players Chiarelli could be interested in and would be stupid not to call about. I wasn't necessarily looking to point out realistic deals.

One of the more exciting of the 25-30 or so flyers games I've been to last night.. Fans were kept quiet for majority of the game and wasn't much to get into really until that 3rd pd goal. Holtby sure is impressive in person. From there on out it felt similar to a playoff atmosphere. Good win and love the way they are playing. Save by Mason on Kuznetsov was unreal and was just another solid game for Mason since Neuvirth went down.

I guess it stood out to me more last night than past games but damn some flyers fans are such dicks for no reason (I understand every fan base has them) but. yelling obscenities in the bathroom to caps fans who are minding their own business. This guy "can't wait for the stadium series so I can piss all over Heinz field!!" And his buddies are lovin it. Dude that's not funny. Icing on the cake for it was 2 flyers fans getting into a fist fight a section over from us.

All this was on fan appreciation night too :lol

Pens getting it done though and on the cusp of denying the Preds a playoff berth for another game.

It is a dogfight in the Eastern Conference. It is amazing to me that with almost every team having just 5 games left to play only Washington has clinched a playoff slot. Gonna be a fun 2 weeks for all of us.

I think so too, pretty much what most of us thought - the central will end up with both WC slots. No chance AZ can run the table and have either the Wild or the Preds take a dump and blow all their remaining games.

Breaking News: Capitals sell out of President Cup shirts. When one fan was asked about not getting the shirt he replied, "This may be the worst day of my life. The only reason to play hockey is to hoist the Presidents Cup and if I can't celebrate that with a shirt, I feel like my five years as a fan has been a waste." The fan was later appeased by being told that the Capitals will be hanging their Presidents Cup banner early this year to ensure they have something positive happen in May.

Actually I never played dirty at all, I largely played defense in my games though I did score a lot because I was fast and quick with my stick and had a good shot - the easiest way for me to score was to skate across the goal mouth and backhand snap the puck into the top of the net. If I had to break up a play I would rather poke check the puck away, lift an opponents stick and the on swipe the puck to a teammate while the other guys stick was still in the air, get down low and hold my stick down on the ice or just plain lie down in their path to deny them shooting or passing lanes.

Sure I took some penalties as many D man do but I never tried to hurt someone. I took smart penalties to deny a one on one with my goalie, usually a slash, a hook or a push. I never tried to hurt anyone and can proudly say I never took a major or spent more then two minutes in the box. It has been about 20 years since I played but I think I drew more penalties than I took.

There's just such a part of me that wants to believe that maybe, just maybe, this might actually be the year they make a serious run. Maybe not win, but at least round 3 or 4.

History stuff aside, this is clearly the best team the Caps have ever iced. That can't be discounted. They're balanced, and built to win in all areas of the roster. There aren't any weaknesses, really.

Let me reiterate, this roster is good enough to win a Stanley Cup.

There's some concerning recent trends, some moreso than others. Holtby's dip is alarming. However, his last four starts have all been very much quality and it's beginning to look like he's back to his first half level. The posession numbers have been up and down throughout the year. My biggest personal indicator, the eye test, says they were untouchably hot until the all star break. The whole team dipped, starting with that weird break they ended up getting, but ever dive the Pittsburgh game early last week they've seem to right the ship a bit. And like I said, they are clearly good enough. They'll need good play and great goaltending, but they play the game the right way, including Ovie, and they could easily beat anyone 4 out of 7 times. I think that's fair to say.

And then there's the history of the franchise. That's been documented and discussed well enough so I won't expand, but I don't think that can be discounted either.

None of this mentions the sheer randomness that is the game of hockey. Winning four consecutive playoffs series requires some amount of good fortune and good timing.

So it's tough. Because I know that it's not unreasonable at all to think this could actually be the year. But the Caps are the Caps, a large part of the fanbase has said that shouldn't matter and we should enjoy this season regardless of the outcome. And there's some truth to that. I just can't help but think the worst of the let downs is coming.

Fucking sucks.

Re: The NHL Thread

This Caps team is definitely the best they have fielded with Ovechkin and has the best shot at winning it all. Biggest thing against them is experience. Trotz has never won it all and a majority of the roster, unless I am mistaken, have no real playoff success. Does anyone besides Williams on that team have Stanley Cup experience?

That being said I don't buy experience as being an automatic ending for the caps, it would just be nice to have more of it when you get into those game 6 and 7s and you're trying to clinch

Re: The NHL Thread

More Hawks news:

Seabrook will be in the game and it is probable Anisimov will be playing tonight.

Hossa is sick and won't be playing, have to wonder who will be on the wing in his spot - likely Weise, Shaw or Teravainen.

Crawford is still out so Darling will make his eight strait but Coach Q is confident Crawford will be skating (not playing) this weekend.

Keith waived his in person hearing and will do it by phone instead. If a suspension is handed out to him does anyone know if tonight's game will be counted as one of his suspended games? Also, can he appeal a potential suspension?

Edit: The Jets have injury problems of their own, they will be playing without their top two centers and their number 2 and 3 d man plus another injury to a irrelevant player - they haven't even announced who will be in net. Going to be a tough game for them tonight against Chicago.

Orpik and Richards also have won Cups

But yeah, I agree. It's always how they close. First halves of series always go so well

Wow, so the fact that it was in-person usually means more than five games.

Yes, he's suspended as soon as the decision is reached. Even if same day as a game.

As to the appeal: https://www.nhl.com/news/department-...s/c-738846#q11

Quote:

Players may appeal all on-ice discipline to the Commissioner, provided written notice of the appeal is provided within 48 hours. The Commissioner will endeavor to hear all appeals on an expedited basis and will determine whether the decision was supported by clear and convincing evidence. A subsequent appeal right to a neutral arbitrator will be available for suspensions of six (6) or more games. The neutral arbitrator shall have full remedial authority in respect of the matter. The standard of review will be whether the League’s finding of violation of the League Playing Rules and the penalty imposed were both supported by substantial evidence.

In all appeals (first to the Commissioner and then to the neutral arbitrator), the Player will remain suspended pending appeal (unless the full term of the Player’s suspension has run).

So basically if he gets a 6 game suspension and doesn't appeal he will be back for game 2 in round one of the playoffs. Perhaps sooner if he chooses to appeal. Am I reading what you are saying correctly?

Yeah, no dice on the camping thing for me, when I was a lot younger I went camping with my lil bro and my uncles and woke up to find a copperhead snake in my tent! So yeah, my idea of roughing it now is a lousy motel or sleeping in my car! :lol

and no dice on Zima either, prefer bourbon or Guinness!

Yes. If it were 6 games, he would miss the remaining 5 games of the season (if the decision is reached before the next game), plus a playoff game.

They would not pull that because then he'd certainly drag out an appeal until the playoffs are over, not to mention something that stupid would open them up to a lawsuit (to cover legal fees and lost pay) if his agent advised it.

I think it was because of the normal playoff-only trolls. Not the ones that are polite and just want to chat while their team is in the playoffs, but the ones who just come around to pick a fight for a couple weeks with our little family here.

Ah, playoff hockey... the best time of the NHL Thread's year!
