Re: The NHL Thread

Happy Thanksgiving all. I am thankful for hockey and for the Islanders win last night vs those hated Flyers, who tried to goon it up and we matched them and got a much needed victory.

Time for 3 of my favorite F's today....Family, Food and Football.

Do you make them wear Foote and Sakic jerseys?

Among others, absolutely. The Orr sweater is also popular.

Married guys can still get some....I mean once a week is not the same pace as during the courtship, pre-marriage ,pre-kids days but it is better than most married men, I gather.

Damn thankful for that.

Re: The NHL Thread

Careful, guys... I'm about to go on another Player Safety rant.

So, Matt Beleskey of the Bruins delivers one of those three-feet-from-the-boards hits on Derek Stepan that I've complained about a million times before and that I consider to be the most dangerous type of hit in hockey. McIlrath takes exception, fights Beleskey. End result is Boston actually GOES ON A PP after Beleskey isn't even penalized for the hit and McIlrath gets an Instigator penalty.

Here's the whole sequence, with the best angle of the hit showing at around the 30 second mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6qez_zGB7U

(And don't even get me started on the ludicrous spoutings of Pierre Maguire during the replay)

The NHL preaches player safety, yet they allow these types of hits to go unpunished. The justification is that Stepan was not seriously injured and was able to stay in the game. Again, INJURY is the determining factor in discipline. All this is suggesting to players that it's OK to hit a guy three feet from the boards... AS LONG AS HE DOESN'T GET HURT. Nevermind that IF he gets hurt on a hit like that, he could break his neck, cause permanent spinal injury, etc. "But hey, he got up and skated away, so no harm done."

It infuriates me. If the league wanted to cut down on these, at least give Beleskey a major penalty for boarding (which is within bounds of NHL rules) and put his team down a man for 5 minutes. No NHL player wants to put his team in that position, and I'd be willing to bet he'd think twice before doing it again.

I love hockey, you all know that, and I try to stay fairly positive when talking about the game, but I see these guys going into the boards like that and I'm just waiting for that terrible moment when one doesn't get up. It's going to be terrible. And these types of hits are TOTALLY avoidable. There's no reason an NHL caliber player should feel the necessity to check a player that far away from the boards in that manner.

Rant over. Sorry guys, just had to get it out somewhere.

Also, congrats to all the dads in here still getting it from their ladies on the reg.

I thought I heard Stepan had broken ribs. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anyways, Isles lost in the Shootout. 9 straight goals to start the shootout. I didn't hear anything on it but that has to be close to the record or something. At least near it.

We've indeed been over this, but it can't be stressed enough how correct you are. Additionally, in this instance, not only is the hit dangerous, it's also VERY late. At the very least, this should've been interference. But I agree. It's ludicrous this seems like a non issue to the league. And these players know exactly what they're doing. You'd think they'd have at least a little bit of respect for their fellow players and not do something dangerous. But sadly we see stuff like this all the time. It's a shame.

Also, just researched a bit, Stepan broke multiple ribs as a result of this. Out indefinitely. So there goes the no injury thing.

Thanks guys, my bad for not doing due diligence. I was just glad when I saw him get up.

:thumbsup My brother and I were talking about how strict they are on goalie interference calls and how if you barely tap a goalie you're going to the box, yet you can board guys right and left with ease.

Yeah the NHL is great at times with adjusting to the times but in others you are like "huh?"

In happy news, glad my Wings found a way to get the extra point last night. Again outplay their opponent, but can't find a way to pull away. Should have beat Boston and Edmonton in regulation. The oilers it doesn't matter going to OT but they could be up 3 on the Bruins but instead they are tied in points.

The fact that injuries define suspensions is the most asinine thing the NHL does.

Also, I really wish we'd see more major penalties. It really seems the league is afraid to call those.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't think the hit is suspend-able.

It's INCREDIBLY late, and at a very dangerous distance from the boards. At the least, it's a 5 minute boarding major.
