Yeah, makes no sense to me either. Not like giving it to a 24 year old violates the "Makarov Rule" the NHL established to prevent someone over 26 years old from winning the Calder - and Makarov won it when he was 31!

With all due respect to Modano, and not just saying this because I hate Chelios, but when he retires, Kane will likely be seen as the greatest American born hockey player of all time.

Yeah, well deserved Hart, vote was not even close. He picked up a Ted Lindsay as well. That said he is not the first US born player to win the Hart but the most recent (and only other) US born player to win it was in 1925 - Billy Burch.

People are considering Kane as the first because he was developed and lived in the United States.

Hey morons, when the team starts playing in Vegas do you think the league will still hold the awards ceremonies there? Will they find a neutral city with no team to host them? Maybe combine the draft and the awards in the same city? Cycle between the 31 (likely 32 sometime soon) existing cities that host teams?

I can't even watch that shit anymore. It's like a REALLY bad award show. I miss the days of it being in Toronto and just the HNIC guys hosting it. It's so bad now. So they could just announce the damn awards via twitter for all I care. I have a feeling it stays in Vegas for some reason. Just a feeling though.

I was just watching some of the highlights and yes, much of it is quite cringe-worthy. However, like I hinted at last night, this is the first awards in a long time where I was totally pleased with all the winners.

Oh, and big news out of Colorado today that Reto Berra was traded to the Panthers. He will be missed. :rolleyes

Sportsnet put up a video of the last time Canadian teams picked in the same slots they are picking this year. Flames picked #6 in both 97 and 98. The pick in 98....Rico Fata.

Also the pick in 97 was Daniel Tkaczuk. The Flames fucked up 2 very high picks in the back to back years. Looking back at drafts around that time....a lot of those bad teams picked bad. Hakws Dan Cleary (who turned out ok with the Wings years later but failed with the Hawks) in 97 and Mark Bell in 98.

"Detroit, I absolutely believe, could be one of, if not the top contenders, if Stamkos is going to leave."

Second:

Good job there Oilers.....

I agree it is the most logical place (entertainment wise) to have it if you exclude say LA and NYC but I think having a team there might complicate it a bit with the way tickets are given out to the actual event. Last thing the NHL needs is an awards ceremony where half the crowd is in favor of one team. Personally I say lets just have it at the Hartford Civic Center for old times sake! :)

Interesting note. Guy I work with is good friends with one of the top scouts for Detroit. Apparently said that when the Oil drafted Yak, everyone was shocked for the simple reason that he'd likely still be there around pick 5 or 6. No one else wanted Yak until MAYBE Toronto at 5.

That doesn't surprise me. Even that not withstanding, he was a stupid pick for them. Now it's like trading away the #1 pick for a future 3rd rounder. lol Come on Toronto, do it. Now that would be entertaining.

You shut your mouth! Oh, wait. I mean. Barbs is clutch and knows his pucks.

A little long on term for me. But I think the dollars are about right for the market based on other mid to low bottom 3 d men.

Fowler rumors picking up along with Subban stuff but I'd be shocked if he gets moved. Also sounds like Stamkos will at least check out the market and Bishop is being shopped, not that it means he's gone but like Subban, you gotta listen.

Good deal on Gudas. He's not a goon, per se, but dude throws the body around and every team still needs that, especially in the corners and by the net on defense.

Re: The NHL Thread

Rumors of Ekblad getting a big deal worth $60mil for 8 years so 7.5 per. Can't sign until July 1st though.

Also TBL latest, and probably best/last, offer is 8 years at 8.5mil for Stamkos. That's $68mil. If Sabres are really willing to go 12mil...over 7 years that is $84mil. I would think Wings could go to 10.5 for 7 which is $73.5. Would be hard to turn down the Buffal offer if they are willing to go there.

Was going to say almost the same thing about him not really being a goon, just a guy who will stick up for his teammates and is willing to block shots. Think they overpaid him a bit (he is a career minus guy who averages a point every 4+ games - sort of odd since he played on some solid TB teams that made the playoffs and a Cinderella Flyers team that made the playoffs) but in fairness the FA market is not exactly swimming with defensemen so I would be OK with this if I was a Flyer fan. He is young so I am guessing that Phillie is guessing he will mature a bit and take less penalties - which the Flyers really need because if they were not killing penalties almost the whole series against the Caps who knows what happens in the end.

Re: The NHL Thread

I thought Bettman's statements regarding gambling in the NHL and how a Vegas team will effect it were absolutely disjointed and out of touch with the real world. He claims fans will not be gambling before and after games when out there ("we're not going to make it all that easy for you to pick up a ticket, a gambling ticket, on your way into the arena."), he claims that he is looking to come to an agreement outlawing betting on NHL games in casino's out there (even if he does their will be a black market for bookies) which will never fly in Vegas. The NHL is going to have to adapt for a team there because Vegas is not going to change it's culture on Bettman's say so - I think the man needs a reality check.

If you go just have your buddy stub you down. The DMB ticketing system was born to be exploited going way back to their first big tours in 1995 when you could just hand a guard ten bucks and he'd walk you down to the best unoccupied seats in the arena.

I'm guessing it'll be sooner than later. If still on the roster, the closer they get to trade deadline day, the more desperate they'll be to move him for just about anything.

Negotiating power slowly slips away the longer they wait.

i agree in principle, but honestly i feel like the league already knows the Penguins have to move him

GMJR said he wanted the 6th overall pick from Calgary should they move him and from what i hear, Calgary basically laughed at him

Re: The NHL Thread

If he's not moved by July 1, he's in PIT at the start of the season. Not too many teams need a starting goalie and there are plenty available. MAF, Bishop, Howard and maybe Elliott. I think it is a when but it's either in the next week or not until after next season. Goalies just aren't typically moved in season and if get all the way to the deadline with two, might as well hold onto both because you saw what happened this year. Insurance is nice. They'll get screwed the longer it takes but...it happens. There is also the possibility that if they can't move him by the expansion draft, they make a deal with Vegas to not take Murray in the draft and they protect MAF instead. Wings did it with Atlanta in 99.

why not? as I said, Wings did it in 99. You trade someone, or something, to them so they don't take Murray. Back in 99 certain UFA's would still get you a draft pick back if they signed elsewhere. Wings traded Ulf Samuelsson's rights to Atlanta so they wouldn't take someone the Wings left unprotected (I forget who). So Thrashers got an extra pick out of it and then took the Wings backup goalie. Not saying it happens but it is a possibility if it comes to that.

I'm with you on this. Does it work long term? We'll see. But I think both sides have really done a good job to try their best to make this work. Would prefer the Coyotes moving there instead of having a 31st team (as I've said before) but it is what it is. We knew it was coming.

I brought it up as a possibility cause that has been used in the past, and because someone in the media also brought it up in the last few weeks. You said they couldn't make the deal with Vegas and yes they CAN but would they is a different argument.

Yotes that desperate to get Matthews? If that was offered, it would be tough for TO to pass it up but I also think it would be dumb for the Yotes to give that up.

i meant "no way" they could make a deal with Vegas as in Vegas would ask way too much in return

As people on twitter have said, he's giving up some UFA years signing for 8 so you gotta pay up to get that. A little high now, but if he continues to be what we think, probably worth it in a couple years.

Yes, but give up a #1 D, a top level prospect and what could become a top level prospect to get one guy who is good but would be a marketing ploy? If he was from the midwest do you make that deal? That's how I would look at it. Are Matthews skills worth those 3 assets? My philosophy would be make your team the best it can and forget the rest of shit.

In all fairness, marketing for the Blackhawks is quiet the different beast than marketing the Phoenix...sorry...Arizona Coyotes.

I'm not saying I would do it, but they seem pretty hell bent on getting him as their cornerstone, and that has to be a huge reason why.

I get their team/fans will look at it differently than you or I would but I just think it could backfire.

It's gotten quiet out there the last few hours. Need more rumors and news.

Rumors Bishop is asking for 7x7 from Calgary, TBL gave permission to talk, and Calgary might turn attention to Howard. If true, thanks Bishop.

I think they go with Bishop. If they're already at the stage where they can talk to him about an extension, it's close.

If they can get Stamkos for that $8.5 million to stay and it means shipping Bishop off for picks and players I'm in favor of the move.

Honestly, fucking ecstatic with the Shaw trade. Hell of a return. Ryan Hartman should slot right in and do 90% of what Shaw did but with a little more skill and power than pure grit and scrapiness.

Will always and forever have a soft spot for Andrew Shaw, though. That little pest brought some special moments and had a hell of a personality along with it. Hope he gets paid, he deserves it after what he sacrificed for Chicago. Never forget "I LOVE SHIN PADS!" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk7eU0wSpew

I mean, I get it. He is clearly the best available at 4...just...idk. Something's gotta give. Obviously they're apparently kicking the tires on PK, but still...it's not done yet.

Can't wait for the Oilers to pick another lottery forward next offseason! We should start taking bets which top rated forward prospect the Oilers are going to draft next year.

I mean I can't get over this. Everyone was thinking it might take Mantha or at best Jurco or Pulkkinen and maybe a pick with one of them. They keep all those players and gain a second rounder.
