I like shotgun, or the idea of shotgun I should say. Just never evolved how I thought it would. They added that regal horn section for some reason and Dave chose not to write verse lyrics after the first verse. IMO he just needs to go back, and listen to that first one, use that melody and/or lyrics verbatim and finish it. How does the original have more lyrics than the current one?

The enigma that is Dave Matthews/DMB

What I said was that Shotgun is a bummer because it got overwritten. But of course feel free to suggest I said something totally different! This is a mesage board after all :-)

I'm stoked for studio WATM, BFI, MME, and STTMB whenever they finish this thing

I thought Shotgun was overrated from day 1, and find #27 to be far superior to it. If Shotgun is one of, if not THE most overrated DMB song, then #27 is one of the most underrated.

Dave “nahhh Nvmd we can’t use that as a bonus cause we’re gonna use it on the next album”

Next album comes “ahhh actually forget those old songs man”

I still think of an alternate branch of the multiverse where Dave focused an album around the tiny guitar with the foundation of jackpot, idea of you and shotgun in 06ish. What it could’ve been if he felt like going that direction and completing those songs.

Don't forget Drive Me Away and Early Home! There's just so many gems they never officially released from that era...

I still think the Batson Sessions as they are > Come Tomorrow (the album).

What’re all the tiny guitar songs?

Idea of You
Jackpot/Falling off the Roof
Shotgun
The Fly
Drive Me Away
Squirm
Baby Blue

He also has that one electric guitar from that same era he uses for Alligator Pie, but was using early on for these tunes but at some point mid 2007 tour switched to acoustic:

Corn Bread
Eh Hee
#27

I feel people would have been very disappointed with studio Shotgun and be disgusted to learn #27 was cut for it. That #27, and #27 in general, is actually decent.

I don’t think Drive Me Away is played on the little red guitar.

He also plays A Whiter Shade of Pale on that guitar too, but that’s a cover so idk if we’re counting it.

I mean we have no idea what Cavallo’s sounded like. He also has an Idea of You, A Dream So Real and Sister. Which i believe at one point Sister was a part of that bonus disc, too. I think people are more disappointed w Shotgun not getting released than they ever would’ve been with #27. Not a diss on it but that one was always just kinda “there” with people. Shotgun & Idea of You were super popular 2006-2008.

We also got Corn Bread on the Europe disc. It’s possible #27 could’ve wound up there in this alternate universe.

I’d count it. I’m guessing on Drive Me Away.

I'll take #27 over Shotgun, despite it being a far less original song...almost a folk blues standard really.

I may well have been, but I never liked from the first time I heard it. Still one of the most generic rock ballads produced by this band.

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

I’ve always liked space between. That’s how a hit really should be written in terms of lyrics. Love the lyrics for the hit song spot on an album.

Also my wife loves 27. I’d never wish to hear 27 before shotgun despite my criticality of it in this thread.

btpeters 05-24-2022 06:24 AM

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

#27 for me is one of the most "okay-est" songs I feel like he's written. Its not bad, its not great, its pretty good. Sounds in line with their sound. I'm just super indifferent. Not sure I'd ever hope for it at a show after hearing it the first couple times (I've only seen it 5 times since 2007 and only caught it on 3 tours total).

Helps out a great set, doesn't do anything for a subpar one.

Surprisingly I'd say no. That one was never really hated on ever that I can recall. As far as I've seen most have always liked it over the years.

Re: New Album Coming Soon?

If we are talking about summer about Shotguns being played across the tour 3-5 more times not being as good as the 06-07 ones that will be a sign of an amazing tour. Yes the song has changed but it is still better than other songs that were self sabotaged and not as good as their original form

Examples

Watchtower Cover- used to be more acoustic and fiddle based and was better (even when santana brough the electric guitar at the vet) it is now a timC/DC led version that sucks
DDTW- Sped up and has lost it's sense of dynamics and campfire feel. they are sneakily taking land they literally are coming in guns blazing
Can't Stop- Sped up from the original version and just not cool anymore it was better when it was played less
Satellite- too much noise of dave's guitar would be better if the piano and acoustic guitar led the song like Live Trax 31 (the best version of the song)
