Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
I know last year was an album release year, but it was painfully redundant. This year should be better, but what if DMB took to a methodology like this instead of just crap-shooting it night to night?
From Wikipedia: Setlists Known for never playing the same show twice, the band has a show-to-show ritual of choosing the night's setlist. At the beginning of each tour Garrie Vereen, a member of the band's road crew, makes a master list of all the songs the band performs and laminates it. Each night before the show he marks the last 3 nights' set lists in different colors. The band can see what has been played recently and then decide what songs to play during the first set. They return back to the list during setbreak to pick songs for the second set, and likewise, return after the second set for any additional sets if playing more than two, or the encore. This process is explained by Vereen in the DVD The Earth Will Swallow You. |

Indeed what if...
Dave will never do this though. |
Re: Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
Not gonna happen.

Re: Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
Or, they could keep doing what they've been doing for 19 years and if we don't like it we can stop going to 13 shows a year.

Re: Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
Well Dave does look at past years setlists at venues. Or atleast that's what he said in that interview.

Re: Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
DMB has never played the same show twice so.....plus that little snippet doesn't say they don't ver play repeats, I mean if I wanted to I could interpret that artice as saying that UM highlights the songs played the last 3 nights and then chooses from that list, therefore playing many repeats...It doesn't say otherwise

I could totally see Dave creating some elaborate Excel macro that tells him what to put down as the setlist for Show X... that seems right up his alley.

Re: Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
I tried to get into WSP and couldn't make it happen.. I wish they would shake it up more, but I'd rather watch the same DMB show 50 times before I went to a WSP show.

Re: Widespread Panic's Setlist Creation Process
WSP is fine. I saw them back to back years (2017-18) at the Wanee Music Festival in Florida. Though I was pretty gone by the time they came on each night, it seemed like a good show. Highlights for me each of those years were Marcus King and Chris Robinson Brotherhood.
I guess now that I think about it, I wouldn't pay JUST to see WSP. |
