Flyers set a franchise record of third period comeback wins in one season--at ten.

Last record was nine. The team? '96-'97. STANLEY CUP BABY.

Loller. We'll never see a Stanley cup. You know that.

I know we talked about this when the realignment first happened... but, now as we get closer: If the season ended the way the standings are currently constituted now (let's look at the East), and Montreal upset Pittsburgh in the first round, then beat the winner of NYR/COL, they would be the "Metropolitan division winner", playing whomever came out of the Atlantic (BOS/DET/TB/TOR) for the Eastern conf., right?

If so, and again, I know these scenarios were thrown out when we all first talked about it, they really need to come up with a better name than something like "the division winners will face each other for the conf. championship." Cause that's just too weird....

yeah, they haven't done a good job explaining it and if they call a team from the atlantic the winner of another division that is incredibly stupid. however it's all just semantics and i actually really do like this format.

Today it would be
Boston vs Mont
TBL vs TO

Pit vs Det
NYR vs CBJ

but still same argument since Detroit and Montreal are in the same division. They'll probably just say the winner of the Metro Division playoffs vs winner of the Atlantic Division playoffs. Like baseball calls it the Division Series. It's really just the teams paired off by record, regardless of division. It's like two MLB division series per conference is what the NHL is doing I'd say.

Honest question....how the hell do I tell what the playoffs would look like if the season ended right now? When I look at the standings the only thing that makes sense is the wild card.

just take the top 3 in each division, auto-bids, then the next 2 highest point totals in each conference

2 and 3 of each division will play each other in the first round and the 1 seeds will play the wild cards.

i have no idea what happens after that :lol

It's not that difficult (almost said hard but thought better of it) boys. If playoffs started today:

Boston vs TO
TBL vs Mont

Pit vs Det
NYR vs CBJ

Now I'm gonna say Boston, Tampa, NYR and Detroit are the winners. Using Detroit because they would be an Atlantic team in the Metro Div playoffs. In round two it would look like this.

Boston vs TBL
NYR vs Det

The winners there play in the conference finals.

bonzo48280 02-05-2014 08:50 AM

It's just about that time of year where I really start watching the teams around the Hawks in terms of standings.

Thanks man! This really did help! I guess I just ignored the playoff changes when the season started. Now that it is getting closer I wanted to know what I missed lol.

Could someone remind me why we don't just take the top 4 from each division?

I guess just in case one division was much deeper than the other.
It looked like that was going to be the case a few weeks into the season, the atlantic looked to have 5-6 playoff caliber teams while the metro had 1 or 2. It has more balanced out now.

The PA had issues with it too. They thought the wild card would even things out. And it did as the top 8 are in the playoffs right now for both sides. But their bigger concern was the 14/16 split and no matter what it was gonna be uneven with a 4 division format. You were going to have two divisions of 7 and two of 8 regardless. If Detroit and CBJ stayed in the West then the two would be in the West. If only one of those teams went East you'd still have two of each just one 8 and one 7 in each conference.

Most likely in the next few years we'll have a team in the Northwest and probably Quebec to even things out and we'll go the top 4. I have to say currently I like this format since my injured Wings would be out of the playoffs if it was top 4.
