It’s just fun to see them playing with swagger and confidence. When they do, it’s hard to stop them. Getting scoring up and down the lineup, D is solid, Grubi unflappable... this is the Avs team I knew has been there. They may lose next round, but I’m immensely proud of the growth they’ve demonstrated this season. |

Not impressed with Johnny Hockey’s attitude. I know he’s frustrated, but to be chirping them as you’re going through the handshake line? C’mon. He was shaking hands, but not even looking the guys in the face, instead had his head turned towards the ref.
Dude, it’s not their fault you couldn’t come through when it mattered. |

One more thing because I’m amped up and not going to bed any time soon. Combo Avs/d-men post... a Matty Special.
Some out there saying Erik Johnson (Avs #1 d-man) wasn’t very noticeable this series, as if to knock him. But you know who else wasn’t noticeable this series? Gaudreau. Monahan. The Flames stars. And who matched up against them nearly every time they were on the ice? Erik Johnson. Points from the back-end are fun to see and even necessary, but in the end completely erasing another team’s top line is EXACTLY what a #1 defenseman does to help his team win. It’s the type of contribution that is not immediately noticeable, but absolutely essential. Go EJ! |

they're finally back to playing like the team they were in the first half of the season when they had the 2nd best record in the league. definitely got hot at the right time. almost like a rockies 2007 run they're on right now. Quote:
i was skeptical of him playing in the playoffs. i heard a ton about how good he is, but he's still a rookie in the NHL and rookies make mistakes and are not playing at their highest level. there is still a lot to learn. girard has been fantastic, but he has also grown a lot over the last 2 years. i wasn't sure if makar playing was really the right decision (especially with the expansion draft issue), but i have been very impressed by his play so far. if it wasn't for the broadcasters mentioning it every time he hit the ice, you'd never know it was his first handful of games in his NHL career. johnson and cole were fantastic this round. for as fun as it is watching makar and girard spin circles around guys and poke check forwards to death, having johnson and cole back there to compliment the speed of the young guys with some brute force is perfect for this team. |

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.
Just woke up and saw the Flames got wrecked. What a weird start to the playoffs. Consequently, I had the Flames winning in 5 and the Lightning winning in 4 in my bracket. Whoops. :lol

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.
Congrats Matty!
That said, I do hate it for the Flames. I really thought they had a chance at making a run this year. Canada’s hopes at a cup took another hit again. Also, this season is once again proving that the NHL regular season is almost pointless in meaning. You really only have to play just well enough to qualify for the “real” season. Don’t get me wrong, this is what makes the NHL playoffs the best in sports. It just also makes following the regular season seriously kind of pointless. Tampa and Calgary getting blow away suggests that there is something off about how the NHL regular season is being played. You really have no idea if a team is good or not until the playoffs. I had a Calgary and Tampa finals in my bracket and the fact that it is busted after round one is insane. I also had the Islanders and Canes in the second round, so maybe I will get that one correct though! |

Congrats, Matty. I barely watched any of your series so I can’t comment much on the actual hockey played, but I am very happy for you.
It’s been really fun seeing all these big favorites go down so fast. I just hope my team isn’t the next one. |

Also, despite their ups and downs I have not missed a Hawks game in the past 3 plus years. Gives me something enjoyable even if it can piss me off a bit at times, part of it is probably my justifying the money I laid out for the NHL.com full package. |
