Re: The NHL Thread
lol Flyers. OMG. They are just hilarious this season.
Tie the game up with 55 seconds left. Spend two minutes inside the BJ's zone in overtime, and promptly give up a partial breakaway for the goal. :lol :lol |
Re: The NHL Thread
Yup, Kings still suck on the road. Sabres get a shutout against them. :lol

Re: The NHL Thread
Excellent game between the Caps and Lightning tonight. Both teams played exceptionally well.

Re: The NHL Thread
So Ovechkin scored 40 seconds into last night's game and then scored as time expired, for an elapsed time of 3,559 seconds between goals. Wow. That's gotta be some kind of record.
edit: nope. On 1/23/02 Michael Handzus scored 23 seconds into a game and then again with 3 seconds left for an elapsed time of 3,574 seconds. Ovie is second. Damn you, Elias Sports Bureau |

Matt Cooke totally reformed himself shortly after that brawl, most likely under the direction of Mario. He stayed clean for basically the rest of his tenure as a penguin and i give Cooke, and Mario, a lot of credit for that. I think Lemieux did the best job he could at backing up his word. Let's not act like the Isles weren't total goons and went WAY over the line that night Also, and i sympathize with Mario/the pens for this, if the league isn't going to start doing a better job of policing dirty play, the Penguins are at a distinct disadvantage. Lemieux tried to pioneer a clean play movement that the rest of the league wanted no part of. So in turn the penguins got bullied for a few years after that. And then the Sean Thronton ASSAULT on Brooks Orpik happened along with the subsequent punishment (which was an absolute joke btw)...Well, enough was enough and the Penguins have finally said that if the rest of the League is unwilling then we better do something about it. Hence the new coach, Steve Downie, Robert Bortuzzo etc... |
Re: The NHL Thread
The move to bring in Downie was more of a "can't beat 'em join 'em" type thing, IMO. The Pens can't have another post season allowing the likes of Dubinski and Staal to absolutely beat on Crosby like a ginger step child.
From the little I've seen so far this season it seem like the Pens have stepped up their physicality. |

Or this... http://www.icejerseys.com/products/H...8374/?pstart=1 EDIT: nhl.com is selling a white Mario 1991-1992 era jersey. I hope they are gauging interest in bringing back those jerseys full time. Worked for the Sabres. http://shop.nhl.com/Pittsburgh_Pengu...rowback_Jersey |

Lemieux tried to spearhead an important movement, and you would a think a voice like Mario's would be heard, but to no avail. hockey wants to stay in the caveman era so Mario basically said "fuck it, might as well try to win then." |

I mean, I once played a couple scrimmage games with a bunch of Utah Grizzlies (our minor league club) back in the day and had John Erskine bearing down on me. Not even that was as scary as reffing a game with no cup. :lol |
Re: The NHL Thread
I'm sad that the Flyers are so bad.

Re: The NHL Thread
Yeah, especially considering the fact the NHL would never let us win the McDavid lottery.

I didn't have a problem with pretty much everything else. You guys had it coming and frankly, I was glad to see the Islanders stick up for themselves. Some of our young guys like Hamonic grew up that night. I understand what you are saying with the other stuff but Detroit doesn't employ those guys to protect Dats and Zetts. While I understand the rivalry dynamics with the Patrick division teams, it obviously can done. He is still my favorite non islander ever and still angry over Graves breaking his arm with the slash and I still feel cheated that cancer and injuries robbed me of watching him more. |

The Steve Downies and Matt Cookes and Cody McLeods (guys who can play regular minutes) are the norm for teams in terms of protection. I like it. Sad to see some of these enforcers losing their jobs, but I also like seeing talent on the ice. Teams like Detroit have those types just as much as the next team. And I didn't reply to your injury update, but glad to hear things are going well! |

I think I told you this story before, but one time I showed up for rat hockey with my buddy and he forgot his cup. He really wanted to skate so he just said "fuck it" and wadded up his shirt and shoved it in his pants. |

Re: The NHL Thread
Did you guys see the Martin hit. I think martin will get suspended, though it will be unfair. It's terrible to see anyone get hurt but I really feel like Ballard caused it by turning so so late and also lowering himself. That was not a good idea to turn late and lower yourself as Martin was committed to the hit and there was nothing he could do at that point. His arm/elbow makes contact with Ballards head but ballard lowered himself.
The hit definitely turned the momentum and game around. I was never more nervous for an injured guy during a hockey game than I was for Ballard. When he started convulsing and they turned him to his side , I was so scared. The video is not the greatest of angles. http://m.espn.go.com/nhl/story?storyId=12007352 |

I agree with you, that's tough for both guys. Ballard is trying to avoid the hit and turn away. It's a natural inclination, and Ballard actually turned the correct way (if he was going to turn at all) by not presenting his numbers to Martin. Martin comes in completely within the rules - including tucked elbows - and is within bounds to complete the check. Yes, his elbow extends when he makes the hit, but I wouldn't say it OVER extends. The problem was, Ballard's head happened to get crunched between the elbow and the glass. His head smacking against the ice like that as he fell certainly didn't help. It definitely wasn't "dirty". Isn't Martin almost perennially a leader in hits for NYI? The guy knows how to hit. But in today's NHL, which focuses so much on head injuries, I wouldn't be surprised to see him sit for a bit. Especially considering the precedence set by Bortuzzo's suspension a week ago. |
