He didn't come to the NHL and become a regular til his late 20's . Those years in Europe had less games so I think his age is less of a concern as far as wear and tear goes. It's his game, especially in his own end that should concern you most along with the dollars...wow. That' said, I wanted him resigned only because he will be replaced from within and that guy won't be nearly as good.

Valid point about Europe, but he missed a whole season with a shoulder injury that has hindered his physical play. Flyers signed him on offense alone because that's Laviolette's system.

Because the Flyers are the most cap fucked team in the league, need to buy out their 2 time NHL All-Star and their goaltender, just to sign a past-his-prime 35 year old defenseman to a 4 year deal with a $5+ million cap hit.

The Flyers need to dig themselves out of a hole, not keep signing ridiculous contracts. They have Giroux to resign after next year! Ridiculous contract.

The mentality in the Flyers orginization is just to keep patching holes til one day it eventually works. This attitude is brought down from Snyder and is continued perfectly by Holmgren. They need to rebuild and realize that a few years of sucking will be worth it if they are smart of it.

Exactly. It's crazy. They have possibly the worst group of prospects in the NHL, and continue to trade draft picks and sign $5+ million deals.

It makes absolutely zero sense.

Yes! Right. And "patching holes" any way they can, even if it's not a perfect fit. How many puck moving defenseman do they need?!

They have no one really coming up in the system. Scott Laughton, maybe...Gustafsson? Other than that, there is absolutely 0 depth there.

I think the loss of Pronger really set the franchise (read Snyder and Homgren) into a nose dive. They felt without Pronger they needed to just try and get the best defensemen available and when that failed to just over pay or trade for whoever the hell they can get their hands on

Chris, you're wrong about all the right things :lol:lol The move was the wrong one, but not for the reasons you're stating. He can still play at a high level offensively, but the first two years are more of a guarantee for success than the next two. And your assessment of Briere is just way wrong. Streit is 10x more valuable than Briere and will be making less money.

As far as depth there's Laughton, Stolarz, Cousins, Gustafsson (who should be playing in the NHL right now), and Lauridsen may have earned a spot on the roster (if they get rid of Meszaros). Akeson could play in the NHL and then there will be the defenseman (I hope) they draft this year.

You are misinterpreting what I am saying.

I'm not saying buying out Briere is a BAD option, I'm saying it's counter productive to buy out an aging player and replace him with another. You're replacing a bad cap hit with another one.

The move would have been to keep the 4th round pick, and not acquire Streit in the first place, and still make the buyouts they were planning on.

And please check out hockeysfuture.com, or any other prospect ranking site...Flyers are bottom 3 in all of them (most have them as dead last).

Akeson is not NHL ready. He's undersized and not a great skater.

Cousins is at least two seasons from even making a NHL roster, let alone contribute.

Hate the Streit deal. Definitely one to two years too long and at too much. Yes, I realize that's what he would have gotten in FA. The point is though the Flyers are in cap hell and have a terrible D core. And an owner and GM hell bent on never rebuilding. Hence all these terrible long term contracts.

The Flyers and Phillies for that matter both need to step back, clean house, on and off the playing surfaces and take some time to rebuild.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

Looks like the Leafs are taking a hard stance on Bozak. He wants somewhere between 5.0 and 5.5 (rumoured). This is way to much money. Grabovski got a ridiculous contract at 5.5. Way to much money. I would happily take Bozak back at 3.5 to 4.25. He ate the most minutes as a forward last year, was our best faceoff guy but was not a true number one center. He only got those minutes by default. Defaulting into minutes does not get you a huge contract. \

In saying all of that, I do like Bozak. I feel like he's a good #2 center and one of the best #3 center men in the NHL. He is great friends with Kessel and if Kadri can keep on improving I could see him and Lupul (assuming he stays healthy) playing first line minutes every night which would given Kessel and Bozak a better opportunity to put up quality numbers.

Flyers will sign Bernier to a 6-year $30+M deal. Then buy him out next season with their special extra compliance buyout given to them by the NHL. Given only to special organizations that can't handle their cap.

Edit: They'll also trade Read and a #2 to get his rights!

I don't know if they see Reimer as a true number one. He had a good season but they played well in front of him. I don't think they should be moving quality assets to get him when they are in clear need of filling other holes.

The only way I see it happening is if It's a reimer for Bernier swap.

In saying that, I don't really see that happening at all.

I want something crazy to happen Like Phaneuf and Gardiner for Weber. They can't keep paying him that contract. Those two players make a difference in your D. Phaneuf is a top 2 d-man on most any roster and Gardiner, as shown when put into the Boston series, is an absolute difference maker on the ice.

I totally recognize that's a pipe dream and will never happen, but a guy can dream, right?

That's not actually what the first quote said. It said Homer didn't blame Bryz for the year the team had. I'm not sure if Winter thought that meant he wasn't getting bought out. Homer then came back and said he made no promises to Winter or Bryz. He's still gone IMO. They need the space.

I've got no problems with Dubnyk, but I also think they would make a really solid 1a, 1b tandem type setup.

D-man would be preferable for Yakupov, but wouldn't complain with a solid goalie either.

I rember while at the ACC for DMB in December thinking "Damn you could drive two cars down here and maybe have a left-turn lane too."

I'm really excited for the new arena/entertainment complex. That area could use it. Woodward is really becoming a hot spot in Detroit.

Mckenzie saying that The Leafs are in on Bernier and it looks to be Frattin + Pick. Someone on another board was saying it looks a lot like Bishop's deal which landed Conacher and a 4th.

I'd do Frattin and a third for him. It would create some goalie trouble in the net but whoever manages to push through gets the job and the other gets traded. Both are Viable #1's in my mind. Especially after the Year Reimer had.

Nope. Still roughly 1.4mil over the cap according to capgeek.com.

The Flyers are so boned. If they don't buy out Bryz, what else can they do? Thought after this year Timmo is off the books

Timonen should have been off the books after this just completed season. That extension was insane.

Its insane but its what to be expected of the Flyers now. They freak out way to easy and rush into dumb contractual decisions. I am beginning to think the only fix will come at the expense of Holmgren being shipped out of town, because Snyder is not going anywhere

Hate to be that guy. But it may be until Snider passes (obv. not wishing that at all) before things change. He keeps bringing in all of his old buddies from Flyers heydays to make decisions and it's just time to give up that gig. Time to get someone from outside the organization to be GM, talent evaluater, cap guy, etc. etc.

But he won't stop this until he's gone.

I'd be all for the Leafs signing him for a couple of years. He's a quality pass-first centre who could mentor some of the young talent for the Leafs. (all of this assuming that Bozak does not move down from him demands)

Texted a friend that's a Flyers fan.

Me: "Briere officially bought out. How do you feel?"
Him: "Pretty good. Hopefully they don't use that cap space to sign an aging defenseman to a 4 year contract or something crazy hahahahaha"
Him: "...................................."

If only the NHL allowed to restructure deals, but then teams like Philadelphia would not get punished as badly for their dumb signings

Sounding like Glendale isn't too happy with the proposed lease agreement. Kypreos saying the team will stay in Glendale for another year but other reports are saying they could still very well move. I don't buy the Kypreos report because like I've said before he reported Suter chose the Wings. Not was leaning towards, chose. Which in my world means he's told them he's signing. He didn't even meet face to face with the Wings until a day or two after he reported that. Anyways...also I'm pretty sure Daly and Bettman said the league WOULD NOT own the team next season.

This is obviously very trivial when compared to 100's if not 1000's of people who have lots, or incurred significant damage to their homes, and businesses. BUT it is a hockey thread so...

My company's headquarters are based out of Calgary, and none of them even came in to work today. Guys were leaving in droves yesterday to sandbag their homes. The city is completely under water right now. You safe where you are, swordo?

Big time, I'm in Ontario....close to "Leafs Land" *shudders*

Thank you for your concern all the same. Sounds like things should improve in Calgary etc. over the weekend. Amazingly there have been no reported injuries or deaths because of the floods.

No kidding. I understand they (Glendale) worry about what happens if the team leaves but maybe one of the companies wanting to manage the arena can get some national acts to come there and with 41 nights free will have the flexibility to schedule them. I was thinking the other day, what if Glendale doesn't cover losses for 2010-11? The sale to Winnipeg was done so the Jets would have been back a year earlier. Would we have the Thrashers in Quebec right now? Atlanta wasn't going to do all that Glendale has done.

Crazy stuff, didn't know it was in the hockey thread.
Apparently downtown is a ghost-town right now. Bunch of people from our Calgary office had to evacuate their houses.
Glad i live in Edmonton today, it's actually sunny here right now.

One of co-workers who works up in Calgary has been down here (in Salt Lake City) all week, and she keeps showing me pics being sent to her. Seems like the whole city is just one big lake. She is supposed to be flying home tonight and has no idea how she'll get home from the airport. Hope any family/friends you have in the area are safe.
