Just ready to move on, lets go!

Why not? Nothing wrong with getting to game 7 of the SCF.

I still wear my Pens gear and they got swept by the damn islanders.

Bitter overreaction from losing...???

Idk, I'm still pissed off they lost. Felt like they had every reason to win. I'll get back to wearing it again.

Good trade for the Caps I think. Gudas adds a lot of nasty that the Caps don't have on their back end. He’s also cheaper and less expensive than Niskanen, and if this gives them space to bring back Hagelin, then yeah it’s a no brainer. Mac killing it as per usual.

Will miss Nisky for sure. He was a big part of what happened last year.

This might get me kicked out of this thread, but bandwagoning the NBA playoffs has made me realize how much better some of the other leagues are in many ways. NBA players actually give meaningful interviews instead of the hockey cliches that are so pointless, the rules stay enforced roughly the same in the playoff as in the regular season, the stars are better showcased, a bit of flair and swagger is celebrated instead instead of shit on by the Brian Burke Don Cherry "old school hockey shouldn't be fun" types.

The trophy handoff / celebration is far better in the NHL though, none of this owner first nonsense.

Football still doesn't know what a fucking catch is.

Baseball is trying to speed up.

Cap relief move IMO. We all know gudas is not the best player out there, he averages about 20 points a year and triple that in penalties. Yeah, he brings some edge but I think the Caps would much rather have Nisky in a perfect world.

For what its worth, i think olli is built more for the west than east. He was really promising but the cancer and injuries kinda delayed him. He isnt the most fleet of foot and that was part of his issue, didnt fit with the pens system.

I am more annoyed at losing Kahun, he is going to be pretty solid on the wing and can play any position on the foreword line plus the potential to be a top 6 guy. That said Hawks have an abundance of talented wingers both in the NHL and in the pipeline so that takes some of the sting out of it.

As for Maatta - I like the guys style (just not so much his contract and cap hit) - he is a defensive minded guy like Hjarlmasson that can offset Keith, Seabrook and Gustafsson so that helps. I also think Maata will help shore up our awful PK!

$10 mil left and still have AB65, Vrana & Connolly to deal with. AB65 & Vrana are both RFA.

If they keep both Burakovsky & Vrana, they'll need to ship out a high salary to keep both Holtby & BAkcstrom

Going to be very tricky

Saw that, going to be tough to make the math work if they want to hang on to Thornton, Pavelski, Meier, Donskoi and Nyquist though.

Sets the bar high for defensmen too - anoyone with some talent is going to be upping their numeric expectations. Happy the Hawks got Maatta prior to this signing too, they have enough talent in the pipeline on defense (plus vets) that they can afford to deal for a center, draft Turcotte to solidify the 3rd line center or go nuts and draft a D man knowing full well they will trade him or one of their prospects for an NHL seasoned foreword.

Tricky is putting it lightly :lol

I like the Hagelin deal. They need a player like him and I think the cap hit is manageable. Hagelin is more important for me than Andre, as weird as that seems. Vrana is a no brainer. Connolly I expect is going to walk, and I think some team will dramatically overpay for him and heíll be put into a situation where more is expected of him than what is reasonable and it has the potential to not feel so good in a couple years.

Also, I trust in Mac. Every move heís made so far has been excellent. Backstrom is a must get it done deal. I donít think Braden Holtby gets resigned. Thoughts on that?

Part of me hopes he takes a step back so itís easier to let him go. But I think they have to let him go. A lot of Caps fans that are in the LBGT community wonít agree as heís made a impact for those in DC but from a business sense I think you let him go and usher in the Samsonov era

The expansion draft is going to throw a huge wrench in the plans too. GMBM does such a a good job, that uncertainty of expansion draft hurts. I wouldnít be surprised if he puts a trade in place

Youíre right about the expansion draft. If he didnít cost the team a fortune (which heís going to) then ideally youíd hang onto him to cover the gap for these next two years and let samsonov develop slowly, and then expose Holtby and let him be for Seattle what Fleury was for Vegas. Unfortunately thatís not really a reality as Holtby has no reason to sign such a contract.

If you let Holtby go after this season, who plays goalie next year? Do we really end up losing Braden Holtby for nothing? Itís a real tough spot. Holtby is without doubt the most interesting of the decisions over the next 2-3 years.

Remember, it was the Jets pick originally. We basically paid them back with “their money.”

To break it down after all trades:

Jets got: Hayes for 3 months and Pionk

Rangers got: Lemieux and Trouba.

I would say that is a steel for the Rangers.

I don’t know, I think adding a proven young defenseman (he’s what, 25-26?) who can move the puck is exactly the type of player a rebuilding Rangers squad could use. I think it’s a brilliant deal.

Quote:

It’s not, but a couple things. One, it’s much easier to swallow moving out the 20th overall pick when you own the 2nd. The rangers are gonna get a game changer at the draft this year. That’s not to say a 20th pick couldn’t pan out also, but look what you get in return. Trouba is a major upgrade from Pionk. A proven young player who the Rangers should reasonably expect many productive years from. So while 20th picks are nice, proven young NHL level defenseman are even better, as that 20th pick may very well become nothing.

Tongue-in-cheek tone often doesnít come across in the written word unfortunately. What I meant by my comment is that usually a rebuilding team doesnít trade away a 1st for a guy who will have to be re-signed after this season. HOWEVER, heís only an RFA and you have to think that with what the Rangers are putting together heíll want to stay.

Trouba is top pair good. If they can hang on to him (and I think they can), the result of this trade will be a huge win for the Rags. Way more so than that 20th pick + a depth defenseman.

Defensive game needs work but the kid is coming off his first full year in which he still got 26 points so there is some potential there for growth.

Yup, Metro will be a bear again, Central too - those are the toughest divisions in hockey easy right now. No surprise the past 11 cups have been won by a team from either of those divisions.

That contract is looking more and more like an albatross every day, he just is not that good. $3,250,000 cap hit for a guy that put up 13 points in 82 games with a -4 rating and too many penalties is going to be very tough to move unless the Pens eat about half the contract to move him. I know he plays a lot of minutes but he is just not worth what they are paying him and he is 32 so the room for growth and development is pretty much tapped out.

Also Barbs, so much for this great parity experiment (aka the cap) lets go back to 2009 and examine the winners

2009 - Pens
2010 - Hawks
2011 - Bruins
2012 - Kings
2013 - Hawks
2014 - Kings
2015 - Hawks
2016 - Pens
2017 - Pens
2018 - Caps
2019 - Blues

So 8 of the past 11 champs were the Pens, Hawks or Kings and the other 3 (Blues, Caps, Bruins were 1 off's) so how's that for parity! :lol

Parity isn't just about the champion. It's teams playing for it. I'd argue that LV, STL, SJ, CBJ, NSH, DAL, etc are small(er) market teams outside the norm.

Agree with this. We're seeing perennial bottom-15 teams making the playoffs, cusp teams getting in and doing damage, teams that have never won a Cup all of a sudden going the distance. It's pretty cool.

And what the list of recent past winners also highlights is the ebbs and flows of teams in the salary cap era. Teams like the Hawks, Kings, and Pens draft and sign well, building Cup contenders that do well for a period of time, stars get signed to monster contracts, and then comes the inevitable dip when those contracts catch up to them. Sure enough, we see the Hawks and Kings not even making the playoffs, and the Pens trending down. Meanwhile, other teams are rising, and they will most likely follow the same pattern. It's fascinating to watch and I'm interested to see if managers try to adjust the way they build their teams accordingly, or if they lean into it and just accept that they'll have "windows" to win and try to strike hard during those peaks before they dip into a valley.

Is this the first time an interim coach is up for the Jack Adams? Awesome.

To break it down after all trades:

Jets got: Hayes for 3 months and Pionk

Rangers got: Lemieux and Trouba.

I would say that is a steel for the Rangers.

Still have to pay him thoughÖ

I know Pionk got some press for that goal earlier this year, but he sucks. Maybe he'll get better with a better team but from the Jets perspective they miss out on Trouba for a year since they weren't going to sign him and get a 20 back.

Except Wilson was two million cheaper and the deal was shorter. Plus I think Wilson is the more dynamic player and Iíd rather have him on my team. Next year will be an interesting one for Wilson. If he can replicate the year he just had, his 5 million cap hit doesnít seem very ridiculous anymore

With all of this money being thrown about all crazy-like, I'm really nervous as to what Marner is going to get. Could mean 40% of the Leafs cap going to 3 players.

He's also 2 years younger - we haven't seen Wilson's ceiling yet

Yeah, how much did the voters drink out of a whiskey bottle before casting their ballots? Some of those picks were absurd but I admit a few were no brainers.

I know this is a hockey threat but take a peek at his video from the US women's national soccer team where a goal was scored. Can anoyone see this ball being deflected because I see someone burning the defense, picking her spot and placing it perfect. ONly reason I am posting this in here too is because we all know plenty about deflections!

I thought most of the awards were well-deserved (a defenseman who can actually play defense won the Norris - FINALLY).

And like Kev said, there were some really heartwarming moments (Carey Price, Lehner's speech, etc.)

But the gimmicks were just awful.

Some that stuck out to me:

Goals can now be reviewed if there was an infraction prior to the goal being scored (puck hitting the netting, hand pass, etc. Sound familiar?)

Coaches can now initiate as many Coach's Challenges as they want, but will be assessed penalties for every unsuccessful challenge

Referees are now required to review every major or match penalty they call and have the option of reducing the penalty upon review (ahem, Vegas fans)

If a player loses his helmet on the ice he has to put it back on immediately or exit the ice (unless he's directly involved with the play)

For a face-off following an icing or to begin a PP, the attacking team gets to pick the face-off dot.
