Interesting! With the Avs in the middle of their inevitable drop-off, a trade may be useful in shaking things up. The one forward who can't seem to get out of Roy's dog house this year is Jamie McGinn. He's shown flashes of brilliance, but also disappears for long stretches as motivation seems to be an issue. Perhaps just needs a change of scenery? His best production for the Avs came shortly after his trade from SJ, so maybe a kick in the butt like that is in order. Also, you can't help but like the idea of him playing with Malkin. He's one of those guys that won't carry a line himself, but really elevates his game when pushed by the right line mates. He's got a great shot and deceptive speed. Great at sniffing out the right areas around the net and getting chances. How does Despres for McGinn straight up sound?

We haven't talked about him much, but I'm fairly high on Despres and feel like he needs more of a chance to develop. What better to do that than on the Avs? They're growing something nice, but there's basically two spots open that are just revolving doors right now, waiting for someone to jump in and take them. Roy is very good at harnessing the strengths of players and allowing guys to play within them, and I think Despres would respond well to that. I don't have the strength to do a full report on him now, but Despres has a really good all-around game that I'd like to see develop.

McGinn may not be enough for someone with the potential of Despres, so we may have to throw in a mid-level draft pick. Thoughts? Let me know and I'll get Sakic on the phone. ;)

As far as what's REALLY going on... I can't help but wonder if they're checking out Talbot, thinking of the chemistry he already has with the core Pens pieces. The Talbot risk hasn't exactly panned out in Colorado, but I'm not ready to give up on him yet. I like where it's going and am not willing to throw in the towel on it yet. I obviously don't think he'd be the centerpiece of a major move, but wouldn't be surprised if they're looking at bringing him back.

Did you read the article on ESPN about how they built it? The Yandle talk drives me up a wall. I TOTALLY understand the justification in Ryan. I get it. But the Yandle thing just seems like a personal vendetta against the guy.

Was surprised to see GM Poile basically said he won't be a guy that is considered ever going forward.

This post is just silly and is only because you are an upset Islanders fan. Stepan and Cally have both missed large parts of this season so far. When playing they are far better than Okposo will ever be. Maybe DS is streaky, but I don't think anyone on here could make any argument that Cally doesn't belong on the USA roster, especially if it was in trade for Okposo...

USA out at the WJHC. Lost to Russia in the QF. Saw a stat that they're PP started the tourney 17 for 21, then went 0 for 11.

Of course, the post was needling but Stepan hasn't been hurt this year (you thought he has missed time????) and Callahan surely belongs on the team. Every team can use a guy like Cally.

As far as they are better than KO would ever be, that's laughable. They're all different players. You don't want watch every Islander game and it's apparent, that, for whatever Okposo has finally "gotten it". Power forwards don't always develop fast but luckily the Isles didn't give up on like they did a Bertuzzi.

I'm only annoyed since it was put out by Burnside that guys like Okposo wouldn't be considered down the line. How dumb is that?

I know team USA built a "team" and since, KO wouldn't be on the top 2 lines, he is not a checker and won't be killing penalties, etc. I never thought he'd make it, though numbers and play in the last year suggests he kind of warranted it.

This is true. But Erik Johnson hasn't really lived up to expectations and Jack Johnson has had an up and down year.

Personally, I would have taken Jack Johnson and Keith Yandle over Carlson and Faulk.

But that's just me.

Stepan missed time from signing late with the Rangers. Not significant time so fair enough. And of course I don't watch every islanders game haha, I am an Engineering major, until the break I had only watched two full Rangers games this season lol.

So I posted this in the old thread back on March 25.

Amazing post up above Chris about getting started with hockey. I hearted it so much I finally "friended" you on FB. I, too, am getting started with ice hockey finally. Been a fan my whole life of the Flyers as everyone knows. I've been playing roller consistently for 5 years now. I'm 29 now and it's funny, I have some hesitations about just trying ice for the first time now, but at the same time I figure, as long as I have some equipment and some practice time, I should be able to pick it up. Maybe not fast but at least there's a basis there for the game.

I've only ice skated probably 5 times in my life. And not since 2008. So this will certainly be an adventure and learning curve. Our season starts in mid-April. We have a few guys in my same boat that either haven't played ice before or not for a long time. We also have some guys that have been doing both for awhile. So we will be a ragtag bunch of goons (not fighters; bad players) for a bit, but I know even being on roller, nothing like hanging with and playing with the same guys and friends week after week. So I'm looking forward to the transition.

UPDATE: So we probably have about 30 games or so under our belt between a spring/summer season and now our ongoing fall/winter season.

I am having a BLAST! We do stink, because as I mentioned, a bunch of us are playing ice for the first time. We've sprinkled some good players in and get some decent subs when necessary. I think we finished with one win in that summer season in 12 games or so. And we have 1 win in 11 games (1 OT loss!) so far this season.

As for me personally. I'm Mr. Utility on the team since I have one of the better hockey senses on where to be defensively. So it kind of stinks to not have a set position and keep working on getting better at one thing. But I like the badge of being a responsible one that the others can depend on. So I've rotated every position except for 'tender.

My skating continues to improve but for whatever reason, and this makes 0 sense since I don't mind going down to block shots and things like that, I still haven't taught myself how to stop properly. It's not like I should be afraid of falling since I have all of the gear on and because of the aforementioned. But I still need to get over that mental hurdle.

I've potted 6 goals in 11 games during this current season which ties for the team lead! I'm all about team, but I'll take that stat as a sign of I'm getting better.

So fun hanging with the guys every 6-10 days. Good times.

Kev, where do you play?

Also, is the league a checking one?

A couple of weeks ago I had a dream about playing hockey. I haven't played in a game since grade school, and suddenly I'm really itching to get back on the ice and play--not just skate.

Up in Warminster at BC Ice. (Formally Faceoff Circle)

Not a checking league but gets a tad physical every now and then. Depends on the game/team you're playing.

The Despres situation is so frustrating as he has played great when actually given a chance, but then gets scratched for guys like Engelland. He is going to be a solid top 4 guy, but Shero and DB have cheapened him to the point where he isnt really worth much yet so it is tough to gauge his value. the thing that has me is the scouting for such a long time. Hmmm very interesting... ROR is having a fairly good year, but methinks he would be the biggest tradeable forward asset on the Avs since Stastny has essentially played himself off the trade block. Letang for ROR sounds about right if it were to happen, but I would prefer McGinn/Depres. Letang - while better than some make him out to be - is not high on my defensive boner list. Depres, on the other hand, seems to have a lot of upside at all ends of the ice. Good to hear he plays well when given playing time.

I'll chat with Joe, you chat with Ray, and we'll meet back here?

Dude...yes! That's amazing. Matty and I have said it 100 times in the NHL threads, but I'm a hockey fan, not just a NHL fan. It's stuff like this that really makes me happy. Keep going at it man.

I used to be a forward, but have shifted myself to be a defenseman (and occasionally center), so I know exactly what you're talking about with the responsible thing. I love breaking up 2-on-1's, or blocking shots, etc. I'd rather play on the PK than the PP. Keep going man. There are so many great things about the game, and scoring goals is just one of them.

As for stopping, keep a couple things in mind:

1) It doesn't just "happen", but once you get it...you get it.
2) You'll always have a stronger side you skate/stop on. Just like you're dominant hand, it works the same way. Try to build up both sides so you're a well balanced strong skater, and not just strong stopping on one side.
3) Try to get used to "shaving" the ice with your blade. Stand at the boards and just scrape the ice with your inside edge of one skate, and do the same thing back and forth. Once you get good at that, let go of the boards, start skating, and then slowly slide forward one of your skates sideways and shave the ice.

Anyway, keep going. It's the best sport in the world. Even when life is shit, that ~90 minutes on the ice, nothing else matters. Glad you're loving it so much.

OT Game winner for Okposo after being absolutely robbed by Crawford towards end of regulation. Threw in another assist, too.

Now in the NHL top 10.

Chants of USA USA after the goal was pretty cool and during the post game interview was cool.

Long way to go but nice to see some better play and winning hockey played by the boys.

Only other I'll say regarding the roster selection is that I think it is dumb that the committee basically chose the roster over the summer. Sounds like it's been set since then and that, to me, is silly.

Depres, on the other hand, seems to have a lot of upside at all ends of the ice. Good to hear he plays well when given playing time.

I'll chat with Joe, you chat with Ray, and we'll meet back here?

Lupul gets a fine of $10k for his hit to the head on Patrick Eaves. Read that's less than .2% of his salary. That'll teach him. Not that I think it was all that vicious but come on. If you want to stop things like this and are serious about head injuries this isn't gonna stop guys.

Kunitz with another 2 goal performance. Now 4th in points in the league.
League Leaders in PPG:

2. Steven Stamkos 1.35

4. Evgeni Malkin 1.28
5. Patrick Kane 1.23

At least from an offensive point of view, they are still relatively young. If this team is allowed to gel, oh boy, maybe in a year or two they could get really scary. Couturier is playing really well right now, and Schenn has finally heated up too.

So I posted this in the old thread back on March 25.

Good times.

Kev, I've been meaning to reply to this for a while. In essence, what you're experiencing and documenting for us (thanks for doing so!) epitomizes and embodies everything that makes hockey beyond great. The camaraderie, selflessness, and playing for sheer love of the game that you are talking about is a very timely and needed reminder of why we love hockey, especially as we sometimes lose ourselves in the mire of suspensions and Ovechkin's terrible two-way play. Keep playing for those very reasons, and PLEASE keep telling us about your experiences. Hearing them is both refreshing and nostalgic, at least for me. Also, I wholeheartedly agree with everything Chris replied to you earlier. One thing he and I share is a pretty pure, basic love for the sport, and it appears you're developing that as well.

Please, please, PLEASE take advantage of your opportunity to be the utility guy. Continue to learn everything you can about every position and approach each one with vigor. Over time, you'll settle into a position that you will prefer (I sense a strong amount of the defensive force in you -- and it pleases me!), but the knowledge of other positions will be far from wasted as you will have a better understanding of what other players - both opponents and teammates - are doing around you. If [when] you decide on being a full-time defenseman, you'll know where to expect your center as he backchecks, where your wingers will be for the breakout pass, etc. Hell, suiting up a few games as 'tender (if you're team will let you!) couldn't hurt... You'll have a much better idea for how to play defense and help him out after you've seen it from his side. Keep it up, and keep laying down in front of shots. It's the most noble of all hockey acts, IMO.

As for stopping, Chris has given plenty of good advice, as he is akin to doing. If there's anything I could add, it would be my own personal experience: As a wee lad, I had trouble learning to stop as well, and I was getting pretty frustrated with myself. Noticing this, my incredible coach took me aside and taught me in about 15 minutes. Here's what he did:
1 - Stood facing me on the ice with a stick held horizontally between us. We both grasped the stick with both hands.
2- He skated backwards, pulling me along and instructing me not to skate, just glide and let myself be pulled.
3 - At fairly quick intervals he'd say, "STOP!", and I would turn my skates into the stopping position while he continued pulling. The goal being to stop his backward motion by my stopping. After I came to a stop, he would start skating again and repeat the process over and over.

We did this down the length of the ice and back again, and after that, I could stop perfectly. Give it a shot with one of your teammates if you want! :thumbsup

Keep it up, my friend!

They both have my vote. It's an unpopular opinion that's already been debated here, but I like the addition of Kunitz over even Eric Staal. Too many centers already on the roster projections, this shakes things up a bit and gives a bit of a sandpaper+scoring element. Staal may be more purely talented and have more international experience, but I like the potential dynamic Kunitz brings.

Sharp's inclusion shouldn't even be debated.

Ugh, shitty end to Canada's WJHC. Disappointing, but we put too much pressure on our kids. We have to realize that the rest of the world has caught us in hockey and we're no longer the undisputed #1. It's sad, but true.

Hope Lou's injury isnt' too bad and he'll still be able to go in Sochi. Regardless, he'll be named to the team tomorrow (at 11am EST for those wondering)

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

Today's number is ZERO.

Zero: the number of even strength goals Patrick Kane has scored with Michal Handzus as his center, the person he has played with as center MOST of the year, side from when he was hurt. Yet, I am not allowed to say Coach Q is an idiot for continuing to put Handzus as 2nd line center.

You'd think he would just happen to be on the ice just once while Kaner was killing some team. Nope. it hasn't happened.

HallowBillies7 01-06-2014 07:16 PM

Shawn Thornton has been switching to a defenseman during practices lately, pretty random but interesting.

Nothing to it. Jody Shelley did the same. It usually allows teams to run four lines, both forward and defense, in practice.

Well when you put it that way...maybe Getzlaf.

But re: Couture, the prediction is 3-4 weeks. The Olympics are a month away. He could still be on the team, but they'd be gambling that he'd be healthy. And as a Sharks fan I'd rather him take the time off and be totally ready when the NHL resumes anyway.
