And I saw a tweet the other day Reimer has more career starts and better stats. I know Bernier has been a backup to one of the best in the league but still a big gamble since he hasn't proven anything yet. Whatever. It's a good pickup just weird. Whether or not they think Bernier is the #1 now or it'll play out in camp I'll wonder how Reimer will handle it.

Sounds like dressing rooms, video board control room, tons of priceless memorabilia and others are completely lost. The good news is that the Flames were/are already close to announcing a new deal for a new barn, so hopefully they can fast-track that a bit.

We all know that I was very impressed with Bernier this season and I'm excited for him to get some more opportunities. As for Reimer, I didn't watch many Leafs games, aside from the post season. Even in the times that he played good, he looked bad - didn't seem to know where the puck was half the time, gave up too many rebounds and wasn't always set up properly. It seemed like a lot of his saves were mere luck. That said, I was impressed with watching him turn his game around that series.

I feel bar for Reimer. He played well and was a major reason the leafs made it into the post season. I hope he uses the Bernier trade as a means of getting better over the off-season and blowing Bernier out of the water come training camp and throughout the season. Reimer is such a good guy. He's polite, well-spoken, humble, quick to laugh.

I don't think it's a hell hole of an organization and I keep holding out hope that with the change from MLSE to Rogers/Bell they will be more likely to use the extensive resources at their disposal. It has the chance to be the greatest sports franchise in hockey, but they just seem to keep fucking it up every time.

Now there are some rumblings that Phaneuf is in play.

If they move Phaneuf for a center or anything else other than another D-man we have a problem. Getting rid of him (the rumour I heard from RDS was to the Avalanche for one of their centers) would create a HUGE hole on the D. Phaneuf definitely has his faults but generally he gives 23-25 quality minutes every night. Getting rid of him would create a very poor back end. In my mind, he is a top 2 d-man on essentially every team.

This is what I heard as well, with the Avs side listing Stastny (obviously) as their piece in play. Not incredibly sure how I feel about this... On one hand, it addresses needs for both teams. On the other hand, both players have been quite inconsistent the past couple seasons.

However, I'm hearing more and more rumblings about the Avs going for McKinnon instead of the Jones in the draft. As much as this pisses me off, it lends more credence to the Stastny/Phaneuf rumors. Needless to say, I'm pretty anxious for draft day to roll around.

I would kind of freak out if that was the deal. I don't see that as being close value in the slightest ( Cap hits are similar but that is it). Phaneuf in my mind contributes more to the team. If it's a straight up deal there is a huge problem here.

Stastny is a 3rd liner on that team. He's a good Centre with a high skill level but he doesn't get a straight up deal for Phaneuf. The guy is a quality top 2 d-man and our Captain. I couldn't imagine that being the deal. It would have to be a much bigger package than Phaneuf for Stastny but I can't even think about what that would include.

@EricOnSportsLaw
Playing 58% of games, NHL generated 72% of 2011-12 season revenue; Danny Heatley knows something about playing 58% of games.

This is why we'll continue to get locked out at the end of every CBA boys and girl. The NHL was not hurt at all by this lockout.

Rebecca De Mornay 06-25-2013 10:10 AM

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

I disagree, it's good that they were able to generate more revenue/game but they still lost almost 30% of the revenue that a full regular season would have produced. If you consider the amount of money that was being fought over during the lockout, losing 30% of a full season's revenue is pretty significant.

Yes they lost 28% of 2012's revenue but missed 42% of the games. So per game they actually made more money than last year. So that means they'll surpass 2012's revenues in 2014 and now they'll get 50% of that instead of 43%. So missing 42% of a season gains you money not even a year after doing it, why would the NHL not try again?

I'm not ready to jump to the conclusion that there will be a repeat next year. I think the shorter season makes it easier to get fans into the arenas/watching games and they basically had every big market team contending.

That's true and possible. But think about all the outdoor games happening next year. The Winter Classic alone would have given a huge boost to revenue next season and now they'll have even more of those. Also can be used for this year too. Lost only 28% of revenue in a half season without your biggest money maker.

I hate how he comes off as such a little prick, but the league overall is better than before he took over. Money-wise they are obviously better. Have a better tv deal (granted it took starting on OLN to do it) things like the Lindros to Philly/NYR fiasco from 92 wouldn't happen today. He's done some stupid things like Coyotes and letting the Whalers move to Greensboro while the arena in Raleigh was being built. They were a cluster-fuck of a league before he took over.

Respectfully disagree, my friend. After watching Stastny play most of career, I can say that when he's on his game, Stastny is a top tier talent who could easily slide into the 2C spot. He's got the talent to be a first-line center, but not sure that's really his role any more. His biggest issue is his offensive inconsistency; he's got a good shot and is an above-average passer with very soft hands, but he disappears for stretches. However, he always works hard and is responsible in all three zones. He'll go to the front of the net and into the corners, and he'd probably find himself playing on your 2nd PK unit. Because of his work ethic, he's been an effective leader on the young Avs.

I am not doubting Phaneuf's talent by any means. My perpetual boner for quality NHL defensemen is no secret in these parts, and Phaneuf has the talent to be one of the top defensemen in the league. However, like Stastny he is notoriously inconsistent. His bomb of a shot and penchant for big hits are offset by costly miscues that seem to have been a part of his game going back to his Calgary days. Some have also questioned his attitude, which to his credit has seemed to improve the past couple seasons as he's been a leader on his team. Examining both players, I would easily say both players have just about equal value right now at this point in their careers. Both (especially Stastny) may benefit from a fresh start somewhere else.

What has been the biggest downfall for the Avs the past 4 seasons? Inconsistent defense. I don't believe the Avs will overpay to get yet another inconsistent defenseman. Could they use Phaneuf? Absolutely. He's still got potential to be a superstar d-man. In fact, I can see him playing really well with a steady, reliable d-man like Erik Johnson. If they do get him, I do not believe they will offer multiple assets. Of course, I'm already starting to question the Avs' mettle with all these rumors of them going after McKinnon instead of Jones in the draft...

The Sakic not taking Jones is still bugging me. McKinnon THAT much better than Jones that you take him? You take the best guy available when the next guy in your position of need isn't close. Jones by all accounts is going to be fantastic and the Avs need help on the blue line.

Yeah, my disgust for this rumor is well documented, so I won't say too much more about it. I'd HOPE that if they do take McKinnon, it's because they already have a deal in place to bring in at least one really good defenseman. But even still, why not completely shore up the D by drafting Jones and acquiring another via trade (ie Phaneuf for Stastny)? Gah.

I'd maybe throw in a 5th rounder with the deal just for the fact that Dion would be bringing Elisha to Denver. :thumbsup

I sharpen my skates every 6-7 times out there. It's not an exact science, sometimes I sharpen them after 3 or 4 sessions and sometimes I do it after 11 or 12 sessions, but generally I try to after every 6 games or so.

Also, find a good place to do it. Your rink should be able to do it for you, and probably does a better job than your local sporting goods store. Nothing worse than a pair of poorly sharpened skates.

I get mine sharpened to a 1/2" hollow. Would never trust that to some guy at Dick's Sporting Goods.

How often do you play? With me only playing 1-2 times a week, I sharpen mine about once a month. When I'm reffing a lot, I'll usually do it twice a month, but that's just because when you're reffing you're on the ice the WHOLE time.

But it all comes down to preference and how you feel on your skates. I know guys who NEVER seem to sharpen their skates and can still fly out there, and then I also know guys who can't go a week. Do what feels good, man.

He deserves a raise based off what he's done and he's the kind of guy you want for the playoffs...but yeah not at the money someone will give him. These GM's need to look at it this way. He's scored 18 goals in 2 years. Is he worth $4mil to give me 10 goals on the off chance he might have a great playoff and help me? Sometimes these guys just click at the right time or are a product of a system. Leino is a great example. Martin Lapointe is another. Definitely Glass.:thumbsup. Letang is looking more and more like a viable option with the McKinnon rumblings. Care for a David Jones?

Don't even joke about MAF.

Jones would probably look nice on Crosbys wing. Everything I've read and heard has the Pens wanting a pick, a d-man, and a forward for Letang. Think the Staal deal last year. But probably better because guys like Letang don't grow on trees. Add in the fact that Staal was really ever going to go to Carolina and i think a Letang deal has the makings of being big. I feel like with the right coaching, Tanger could grow into one of the best pmd in the league. He is a classic case of a guy who has the tools but is missing the tool box.

As an aside, anyone have any bold predictions for the draft? I think the pens, if a deal isnt reached by then, deal Letang. Philly moves Read for a goalie. Avs end up 'fooling' everyone and taking Jones.

I would mind Letang on the Wings. He would help them out a lot. I'd give up next years first rounder but not this years. The Wings are a team that hasn't picked in the top-20 too often and in a deep draft I wouldn't give that up.

:thumbsup Agree with pretty much all of this, including your assessment of Letang.

If the Avs do not select Jones, I wouldn't be surprised to see them make their deal for a d-man during the draft. Stastny would be the centerpiece I'm guessing, with guys like Letang and Phaneuf primary targets.

MAF and Malkin to BUF for Miller, Myers, Stafford, and a pick.

Well, now that the crap shortened season is over....time to move on to the first real NHL season since the lockout!

Rangers and Nucks trade coaches. Should be interesting to see who has more success!

That doesn't help their cap situation. They need to go cheap and short term.

Bryz needed to get out of Philly. He just never seemed to fit there and really hasn't played well. Now that's another guy we'll have to see where he goes.

Seems like Bryz would do better on a smaller market team. Send him to one of the Florida teams and watch him shine.

This assumes Holmgren uses logic when making deals. I'm basing my guess off of historical facts.

I agree he's done stupid crap but he can't go over the cap and swapping Bryz for Lou does exactly that.

Just reading his tweets. He sounds like a real beauty, that's for sure.

I'm thinking Bryz ends up back in Phoenix/Seattle.

Edit, just saw this;
Flyers will pay Bryzgalov approximately $1.63M each of the next 14 yrs to not play for team.

It's amazing that they were playing the Sabres in a closely contested playoff series just a few years ago.

Since then both of those front offices have done nothing except produce straight, liquid diarrhea.

Yup. Awesome to see people getting on him. The biggest thing taken from it is that the players will never want to talk to you now so you are hurting yourself professionally... Douche.

Also with the Bryz. He's getting $23 million over 14 years of uncapped money, which is peanuts to a franchise that makes well over that in revenue a year

Flyers management needs to be cleaned out.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why would you go out there, pay all that money for a goaltender, and then buy him out because he was a "locker room cancer"? Didn't anyone do any homework on the guy? You have Chris Pronger on your roster, and you didn't go to him and say, "Hey Chris, we're thinking about signing Ilya, good idea? Is he batshit crazy?". Honestly, every time the Flyers take one step forward, they take four steps back.

They still have a pretty young team that has potential, but they have 0 defense and 0 goaltending.

Funny people mention the CBJ....

Was listening to Hockey Central on Fan590 over the lunch hour, and they were saying that the CBJ have asked the Flames for permission to speak with Miikka Kiprusoff in an effort to get him to stick around the NHL and sign there.

That all makes less than zero sense to everyone else right? I mean, he's all but confirmed he's retiring. Granted Kipper has regressed a little from his top level form, but why would you bring him in anyway? So he can back up the reigning Veznia winner? Or is it to make Bobrovsky compete for his job? It's a head scratcher folks.

Good question, but yeah I was seeing the same thing. I imagine it's a bit of both... be a mentor for BOBROVSKY while being good enough to challenge him to play to top form every night. Much like the Avs are doing with having Giguere backup Varlamov. If you read quotes from Kipper, it sounds like he's all but done, but you never know what will happen once contract numbers start being thrown around...

Still, I tend to agree with you. It's a bit strange.

EDIT: This, of course, is assuming that BOBROVSKY is a Jacket next year. I think he will be.

More security here than in the KHL. I think he stays. Hope he does for their sake. He leaves, yeah just fold cause you finally catch a break and get a guy who comes to you and does well, instead of the other way around, and you can't keep him.

Rebecca De Mornay 06-25-2013 03:04 PM

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

I honestly think CBJ will be a very decent team next year if he stays. They played so well down the stretch and will be adding 4 top prospects (3 first round picks and Ryan Murray).

I was talking to a guy who works for the team and he said this was the first time ever they had a core of guys stay in Columbus during the offseason to work together.
