Laviolette knows his stuff and shouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Was basically going to reply with both of these answers, thanks guys.

Syd should wait and just call this year a wash, but like Tim said, it's tough to keep a guy like him off the ice.

I'm not saying JVR didn't say that stuff about Laviolette, but if he did the dude (and the rest of the team) just needs to suck it up and play. Ant gave a fantastic example with the TB situation. You don't like your coach? Tough. You're getting paid millions of dollars to go out and play a freaking game. It's not your job to whine and complain, it's your job to play. Even better, you have a coach that has won a Cup and is a proven winner. You may not like the guy, but it's your job to play.

Overpaid but not the most overpaid player on that list....I'd say if anything Grabovski is slightly underrated because he doesn't put up huge numbers.

They absolutely are comparable. Hossa's last 4-5 years really don't even count, we could buy him out so fast and not worry about his contract again (if it came to that, which it won't).

His cap hit is lower, which is the important thing. The more time that passes, the more that Hossa deal looks amazing for the Hawks.

No, they aren't in my opinion.

If Hawks buy out Hossa before his last 4-5 years, that is not helping them at all. http://capgeek.com/buyout_calculator...06&buyout_d=20

Plus, the cap hit may be what is most important to the team, but the player only cares about the money. Hossa/Richards/Carter are almost guaranteed to earn twice as much $$, AND they signed their contracts all more than a year before Grabovski. Their cap hits are the same, but Grabovski is not guaranteed anything after his age 33 or 34 season. There's a big difference there.

Fact is, Grabovski was going to be the top center in the upcoming FA class and would have easily gotten that contract on the open market. He would certainly be a #1 C on at least a few teams.

I'd rather let Grabovski walk than pay him that much over 5 years.

Now when Kessel and Lupul enter the bargaining room there's no way they settle for less than that.

They wouldn't have anyway. Lupul's already making $4.25m and is having a point-per-game season. He'd be right in line for a Patrick Sharp-esque deal if he replicates it next season. If the Leafs want to keep him they probably try to get him for the same contract as Grabovski.

Kessel now making $5.4m....if he continues as a ppg player the next two seasons he'll easily get well over $6m a year, or a really long deal.

Obviously, there is a great amount of uncertainty with respect to the next CBA. Nobody really knows if existing contracts will be rolled back, or if the market will just be suppressed for future deals. But free agency starts well before the deadline for a new CBA, so the market for Grabovski is kind of up in the air. There are still a lot of teams that could easily fit a $5m+ into their payroll even with a slightly deflated cap. But maybe the market would be lukewarm because of CBA uncertainty. So it's a very good deal for Grabovski, not so much for the Leafs, but I guess they weren't willing to risk him getting to FA.

If Crosby returns, who do you take as the class of the east; NYR or PIT?

I for one think it would be a great match up. As a Rangers fan I am worried about the Penguins potential with Sid back.

Also, I am aware there are other teams in the east that are not to be overlooked (talking to you Flyers and Bruins fans).

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

As soon as Sid hits the ice (and stays on), the Pens are my favorite to come out of the East.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

The east is completely up for grabs this year. The rangers are obviously the favorites but they haven't had much playoff success in a while. Even with the Pens having a healthy Crosby I think any of the Rangers, Pens, Bruins, and Flyers have a chance. I don't really see anyone besides those 4 coming out of the East.

Apart from them playing the Rangers, I would love to see the Jets make a dent in the playoffs. They have one of the most exciting home ice advantages in the NHL. Obviously I don't see them coming out of even the first round, but it would be cool if they did. Can you Imagine that arena with home ice as a 3 seed?

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I want no part of them in the 1st round. They've played the Bruins tough all year. They beat the Bruins twice and the Bruins were able to squeak by them once. Out of the probable bottom 3 seeds I'd most want to play Ottawa in the 1st round.

See I thought I wanted nothing to do with the Jackets in 09. They had played the Wings rough all year and Rick Nash was killing them. The exact opposite happened.

Except the Jets have hands down the loudest home ice advantage in the league and have been stellar all year on home ice. Could make it interesting if they find a way to the 3 seed.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

As a ranger fan, I'd probably prefer the eight seed to be Tampa or buffalo. I know the caps suck but they own the rangers and Semin just absolutely destroys us.

I think PIT is probably better with a normal Sid back. I'd be scared of that matchup and want no part of it.

I know the feeling but when you win the series you wanted no part of it makes it worth so much more. Wanted nothing to do with the Avs in 2002 or the Sharks in 07 and winning those series were two of the best.

So true, and let's face it, to be the best you have to beat the best. It doesn't matter if that is in round 1 or 4 of the playoffs.

It's definitely always better to win it against the toughest path. 94 eastern conference final was an epic series, followed by another epic series...

The finals last year were one of my favorites in a very long time. Two great teams playing so hard. Was a pleasure to watch!

OK thank you. That's what I thought to, just needed people to reaffirm that thought. Lots of other people were saying how hilarious it was. Just needed validation that it, in fact, isn't hilarious.

I disagree. Watching them choke away that series, especially Lou, while the rest of the team got completely bitch slapped was completely worth it. Then watching their asshat fans nearly burn the city down. Priceless.
