Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Just reading the latest issue of The Hockey News, and they ran a small article on some of the traditions certain hockey players have. We've all heard of the game day meals and playoff beards, but these are a bit more interesting. Thought y'all might like a few:

* Wayne Gretzky would put his equipment on in the same order before every game. This seems to be a pretty common one (I do it), and some adhere to it more zealously than others. Theo Fleury, for example, talks about in his autobio how he even has to start taping his shin pads in the exact same spot, and meticulously wrap it around only a certain amount of times.

* After Crosby tapes up his sticks, he can't let anyone else touch them. If they do, he'll re-tape the sticks.

* Crosby also won't talk to his mom on game days, as he's always gotten injured in the past when doing so. He must've had a good long convo with her around January of last year...

* Vincent Lecavalier can't let his stick touch the ground when he's walking from the locker room to the ice. If it does, he has to get a new one.

* This one's more commonly known, but Patrick Roy didn't consciously skate over any of the lines (blue, red). If you watch old vids of him, he always skips over them on his way to and from the net.

* Danny Briere rewards his sticks for good performance. If he has a good night using one stick, the next night he'll give it "the night off" and use a different one.

Anyone know of any other quirky/funny traditions from hockey players?

Yeah. What Roose said. Pretty much late game scratches. So my guess is that they have been nursing some pretty bad injuries and that they'll be out a week to 10. That's my guess.

Both guys are iron-men though. I think Mez has only missed a game or two since joining the Flyers.

I really want to, just gotta find some time. Thanks for the Amazon link, I'll definitely be taking advantage of that.

Will let you know so you can release all those pent-up feelings. ;)

Couturier, Schenn, and Giroux all have their contracts expire the same year. I can already see that being bad especially with Briere, Coburn, Pronger, and JVR still being on the books.

anyone else notice that for potentially the 4th year running the Hawks could have a different playoff goalie than their opening day goalie?

08-09: Huet, Bulin wall in the playoffs
09-10: Huet-Niemi in the playoffs
10-11: Turco-Crawford in the playoffs
11-12: Crawford-maybe Emery in the playoffs?

Coincidence? I'm starting to think not.

Yeah, but Pronger's contract won't count against the Cap, and if the amnesty cause in in the next CBA, you gotta think the Flyers will use that on his contract.

yeah, Prongers contract will count the remainder of his deal. Something about retirement due to injury not allowing the money to be taken off

They usually have one goalie on the team that when they are in the team runs around like their heads are cut off and play with no confidence. Crawford is that guy this year.

then maybe I misunderstood it as they still have to pay him or something. I remembered something being real bad about his contract

Simply put, one of the two for the past 4 years has the tendency to let in untimely, back-breaking goals.

It's a pretty strange coincidence that 4 straight years out #1 goaltenders change come playoff time. Could it be the coaching staff? I absolutely think so.

As much as I think this current staff is pretty incompetent I'm not really sure how much of an impact they can have on this. Q is pretty clueless though when it comes to picking which goalie to play though in certain situations.

They could do it. They've had injury problems and can send Bishop down without a problem this year. And to keep him from a team you are fighting with adds up. So noon tomorrow is when we'll know?
