One crashes the net, another trails, and another hovers around the hash marks or heads to the boards to provide support.

Yes, puck possession is critical, but it all starts with playing strong defense (as a team) and producing a strong breakout. And the strong breakout isn't just the responsibility of the defenseman with the puck, it's about the forwards as well being in the right position and covering the right guys in order to give that d-man a chance at success. It's about all six guys on the ice (yes, even the goalie is important for breakouts).

A team that can get it done in their end is the team that will be able to naturally transition to offense and get scoring chance after scoring chance. That's what I mean by building your team from the net out.

Sorry for the long-windedness, it's the particulars of hockey, those small intricacies, that make me love the game so much :)

Yeah, I totally agree with this.

To me, the system and having the players buy into the system is most important on defense, while great offensive talents are more important to offensive success.

I think last year's Boston team is probably the best example of your case for defense creating offense and being the key to winning. Obviously, it's important, but there just aren't many teams who get the SCF without a great offensive talent or the ability to roll multiple lines that can score and be threatening on the offensive zone, and the Preds just do not have that.

I'd love to see the Preds end this hockeytown streak tonight.

I'm too lazy to back read... Flyers and Red Wings made offers to TBL for Pavel Kubina, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. Also, apparently Philly made an offer for Jack Johnson as well.

Not straight up. But if the Flyers "throw in" an injured Sestito, it's probably a done deal. But the Flyers will never do that because they have to have a mega jumbo enforcer useless guy on their team at all times.

I know that this may come to a surprise to you two but the NHL is a buisness.

Flyers fans love to see fights. The owner/GM's job is to put an entertaining product on the ice for fans to see. As long as Flyers' fans want to see fights, there will be an enforcer on team.

Makes good buisness sense, ya know?

When Peter started coaching in Philly, everyone was in an uproar over his stance on fighting. "Is Peter going to allow his player to fight?" "Will he maintain the stance he had in Carolina?" The episode itself is pretty comicial but it goes to show how much the fans care about fighting.

At the end of the day, is there something wrong with having an enforcer on the team? Nah.....

Having several enforcers on the team is another story.....

Steve Mason barking at his coach after getting pulled for letting up 4 goals on 20 shots, and for just really being a shitty goalie, is probably the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Steve Mason is such a piece of shit.

they tend to not talk about rumors....ever, so that's what made it jump out at me. I'm seeing it in a few places though. Wish it wasn't McNeil going though.

Yeah, and I tend to think Schenn is a little overrated...and he has a lot of time left on that contract. I'll have to dissect that trade if it actually happens.
