Re: The NHL Thread

So I was thinking about it right as tonight's game was ending, but the Stanley Cup has largely gone through Tampa Bay quite often the last 10 years. In the last 10 playoffs, either Tampa Bay or the team that eliminated them from the playoffs has won the Stanley Cup 7 times.

2015 - Chicago defeats Tampa Bay in the SCF

2016 - Pittsburgh defeats Tampa Bay in the ECF on their way to winning the SCF

2017 - Tampa Bay misses playoffs

2018 - Washington defeats Tampa Bay in the ECF on their way to winning the SCF

2019 - Tampa Bay gets swept by Columbus after winning the President's Trophy, Columbus would lose in the 2nd round

2020 - Tampa Bay wins SCF against Dallas

2021 - Tampa Bay wins SCF against Montreal

2022 - Colorado defeats Tampa Bay in the SCF

2023 - Tampa Bay gets eliminated by Toronto in the first round, Toronto would lose in the 2nd round

2024 - Florida defeats Tampa Bay in the first round on their way to winning the SCF

Re: The NHL Thread

Thought the Stanley Cup final was really amazing this year. Tough loss for the Oilers and Canada, but amazing job by Florida to overcome massive doubt after blowing that 3-0 lead to win game 7.

Some random thoughts on it all:

1) Not sure I love HOW much Brady was celebrating his brother winning it. Awesome that he is there supporting Matt, but if I were a Sens fan I would be kind of annoyed and would be very unhappy if I saw him touching the Cup.

2) Funny how things change. I always thought I would be super happy if Florida won a cup since I have always had a soft spot for them since being a fan when I was little. That said, I found myself pulling very slightly for Edmonton. Amazing how your team getting knocked out can make you have a distaste for a while against another team. Also, the Panthers rebrand makes it feel like a different team anyway.

3) The race is still on between all of Cananda and the Rangers to see who gets a cup again first.

4) I am officially sick of the state of Florida winning titles. Enough already. I am all for a moving salary cap to account for taxes of certain regions. I do think that is going to continue to be a story in the coming years. I don't think it is a coincidence that Florida keeps winning things.

5) McDavid is amazing. I don't love him winning the MVP for the entire playoffs when he went scoreless in arguably their two biggest games. Felt like Bob should have won it. That said, I will likely love that he won it if the Oilers never win a cup. His name belongs on trophies like that.

6) As I sat back and watched Florida raise the cup, I couldn't help but have that same old sinking feeling that I may never know what it is like to see the Rangers do that. Even worse, I realized once again last night that I am starting to care less and less if they do as overall this means a lot less to me as I get older.

Anyway, good season and we are being thrown right into the off season now. Hell, Boston and Ottawa couldn't even wait lol

Coyotes owner still owns the team rights or whatever in Arizona. So this means I guess he gives up the rights and sells the Coyotes rights to whomever wants them. A land auction went bad a couple of days ago as he was trying to buy some land and build a rink for the Coyotes.

its not a debacle. you cant create a brand and everything that goes with it in like 5 months. when expansion teams are announced, they have several years to get things in order. utah has an offseason. if they tried to create a brand for next season, it would have been done quick and sloppy.

i dont really know why anyone would want to have a team name so closely related to the team that they will likely become rivals with. bilzzards lead to avalanches. the avs had a yeti mascot. picking either of those just feels like copying someone's homework. it seems lazy. utah has other things its known for, do something with that instead of something that is closely related to another team from the same region.

i think the swarm or hive, or something else bee related would be best. its utah. its different. theres more marketing for it. the arena would be known as the beehive. the 3rd and/or 4th lines would be known as the worker bees. they could have a queen bee either as a mascot or like a model/miss utah. they could take it more in a way that vegas did.

Yes, but only if it makes sense. We will likely need to retain as much as 50% of his contract depending on the team. I am all for freeing up cap space, but not if it doesn't really improve the blueline. Holding onto Trouba for 1 more year to see out the contract and then doing a sign and trade might be an option too.

The other thing is that he is greatly limiting the teams NY can deal with because he has made it clear that him and his wife want to live in certain markets. That was a big reason he signed in NY to begin with.

Following up on the Trouba thing. Seeing a lot about how his wife is currently finishing her residency at a NYC hospital and they have a baby under 1 year old. This is playing a factor in him being resistant to a move. I keep seeing delusional Rangers fans freaking out about this online saying things like "I don't care!" "Trade him anyway, he is a pro, deal with it." Trouba apparently turned in a list that was strategically teams that likely wouldn't work for a trade. While reports are saying he has not said no to any trade talks yet, I think a lot of fans are falling to see a key point of all of this. Trouba can absolutely refuse to play if traded. The Rangers can go ahead and make a deal, but any team will want to talk to the player first to make sure they are on board with joining the team. If Trouba just flat out says "If I am traded here, I will not be joining the team and will not be playing this season" he can effectively squash that deal. He has made it clear that his wife's career is a key factor for them for years. Her salary will be their nest egg later into life too. Most NHL players are not married to someone with a great career of their own so I think a lot of fans are missing that key factor here. He doesn't need to play.

All of that said, I don't think he is trying to make it hard on the team either, but I don't blame him for looking out for his family's needs first.

Trouba has $58 million in career earnings with another $16 mil guaranteed,,,,pretty sure $74 million in earnings is quite the nest egg itself
