Live Trax Vol. 60: 8.20.95 - Cincinnati Music Hall

8.20.95 Cincinnati Music Hall – Cincinnati, OH

Live Trax Vol. 60 takes us back to 1995, finding the band in the middle of forging a now classic sound; with a twist. David Ryan Harris, who was touring in support of DMB as part of Dionne Farris’ band, sits on electric guitar to add some firepower to Rhyme & Reason and Jimi Thing. Near the end of a segue way laced set, Dave gives a glimpse into the future with a solo acoustic version of an early Raven, with Little Thing folded in throughout. Listening back to this era, with its equal parts intimacy and intensity should be a joy for fans of any era of the band!

Not here to hate, but whoever decided on this release, did they not know Live Trax 5 was already released? It's literally from 3 days earlier, with DRH guesting on the exact same songs as LT. 5.

The Raven is worth it here I suppose, just a very odd selection. If we were going back into the vault, why not another 92/93 show?

That being said, I will take any pre-Crash PM with those epic Roi solos.

I’m seeing they have Little Thing listed on the same track as Ants Marching. Really hope that’s a typo

Do people still listen to CDs? Probably won't buy a Live Trax until they release it in vinyl.

Is there a reason they don't these in vinyl often? There seems to be a decent demand, I would pay more no questions asked.

To hell with it, I’m preordering the t shirt with the CD. What the hell happened to the 24/96 FLAC downloads!

Pre-Crash #41 and Say Goodbye, early Raven, and and True Reflections make this show unique enough to merit a release IMO.

I'm a little confused by the tracking of Ants > Little Thing, but whatever. Beautiful cover art.

Now we just need the 9/3/95 Typical with Dione Farris released. She kills it.

Agreed. Not to mention, this is also a special Halloween. That song was a staple in the early days, up until April of '95. It was played just once more in 1995 (8.20.95) and then only once more before it was reworked for Scream 2/BTCS. That date was 10.31.96.

You can buy a digital download in FLAC format if you prefer not to buy a CD. As to vinyl, it's extremely time consuming to produce vinyl right now because the pressing plants can't produce enough fast enough. They probably would have had to wait 6 months to release this on vinyl and they probably prefer to make money now rather than wait for vinyl to be available. They probably already have another vinyl release in production currently that will be released later this year like they have typically been doing.

Were 24-bit downloads available for other really old shows? My guess is that 24-bit source material didn't become available until sometime later. These old shows were probably recorded in 16-bit, but I don't know.

LT33 was available as 24/96, I get this tape might not have allowed for audiophilic purposes, but there were lots of examples of LTs around LT45s time frame where they probably had that capacity.

Here's to hoping we get an awesome show on vinyl in the near future. Am also in the Twin Cities-cheers.

I understand the appeal of having huge cover art, and the pops and hiss of vinyl can add atmosphere to an album, but...

1) Especially for a live album, I want as few breaks as possible. A CD allows for 75 - 80 minutes of play without interruption; you have to flip your vinyl after about 40 minutes, right? Which means there are times (due to song lengths) where you need 3 LPs (i.e. 5 side flips/record changes) instead of changing the CD once.

2) CDs are less fragile (I've melted vinyl by leaving it in a car)-- which means there's also much less chance of a CD getting damaged in the mail when it's shipped to you (since not all couriers are gentle with packages).

3) You're much less likely to get a bad copy of a CD - it seems like so many ants have gotten bad pressings of vinyl and had to contact MusicToday to get it replaced.

4) If you don't live in the US, it can be VERY expensive to get vinyl shipped to you.

Also, and I recognize the U2 fan base is older, but yesterday @U2songs posted poll on twitter asking "When U2 releases their next album, which format are you likely to be found listening to it on the most?"
28% have said CD
22% have said vinyl
24% have said buying a digital copy (e.g. from iTunes)
26% have said streaming.

Since DMB continues to release CDs, and older DMB fans are going to be a similar age to U2 fans (and so likely have similar thinking), CDs are likely quite popular with DMB fans.

I'm not criticizing you for preferring vinyl (like what you want to like!) but there are a lot of CD fans still out there.

DMB is the only band I still buy cds from for the physical copy because I have everything thus far. If they switched to digital only they'd lose money from me.

Very excited about this one!! Great selection from an amazing time period for the band. Love the cover art, too! Hope it's a great mix/master! :thumbsup
