I forget the rule on what you are suppose to do first. Isnt it X then ÷ then + then -

Re: 48÷2(9+3)=?????

Is this a trick question? How is 2 not the answer?

I mean, I see how you could arrive at 288...but I also assume everyone should know that parenthesis are done first...

water_into_wine 04-13-2011 04:18 PM

Re: 48÷2(9+3)=?????

288

You do the parentheses first and then move from left to right with either division or multiplication.

48÷2(9+3) = ? is a math problem that, depending on the order of operations used, leads to two different answers: 2 and 288. It can be a hot topic for debate, and is sometimes used to troll other users because of the argument that can result afterward.
:lol :lol

Please (parenthesis) 9+3=12
Excuse (exponents)
My (multiplication) 2 * 12 = 24
Dear (division) 48/24=2
Aunt (add)
Sally (subtract)

answer is dos

Not trying to troll anyone, just very curious as to what people think. B/c the equation can be written multiple ways coming up with different results

Re: 48÷2(9+3)=?????

From Wiki:

A common shorthand is B. E. D. M. A. S. which is: brackets, exponents, division & multiplication, addition & subtraction.

This means that if a mathematical expression is preceded by one operator and followed by another, the operator higher on the list should be applied first. The commutative and associative laws of addition and multiplication allow terms to be added in any order and factors to be multiplied in any order, but mixed operations must obey the standard order of operations.

It is helpful to treat division as multiplication by the reciprocal (multiplicative inverse) and subtraction as addition of the opposite (additive inverse). Thus 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 3 • ¼; in other words the quotient of 3 and 4 equals the product of 3 and ¼.

So basically if you make the "÷2" part equivalent to "*0.5" then you have all multiplication left and you get 288. Boom.

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, doesn't give the exact order. Multiplication and Division as well as Addition and Subtraction are instead done from left to right.

See my above post with BEDMAS.
