This is pretty funny by itself because you never missed a chance to rip Richards before the Cup run. After the Cup run, you were singing Richards' praises throughout the season. Once the season ended, you were back to ripping him again. Simple question: if Richards was as bad as you think he is, why was his GM about to cry on the day he traded him? I bet he was overcome with tears of joy since he was finally able to get that cancer off the team.

Unbelievable. :lol:lol:lol

Mike Richards is not a bad hockey player. He's a very good one. What happened to him here in Philly is a combination of things that went wrong--some of it was his fault, most of it was not. Regardless, the thing that has always irked me, especially since he was a captain, was his attitude. I understand that Richards might not be the most personable guy for the media, I really understand that. But when you play in Philadelphia, the last thing you want to do as a player is seem disinterested. When the Flyers lost, Richards would shrug it off, and just say it's another game. When it was a losing streak, he shrugged it off, and said it was bad bounces. You don't have to kick and scream in the locker room to be a great captain, but you have to have the attitude of going out there and busting your ass. Did Richards do that for himself every shift? Maybe. But for his team in a leadership role? No, I don't think so. To me, it was very obvious from the beginning that Richards was overwhelmed as a captain. The very reason they brought in Chris Pronger was to help mentor Richards as one.

I've written pages on what I think about him as a player, but I'll leave with a quote from him:

It could be the lifestyle, but with (Anze Kopitar(notes)), (Drew) Doughty, (Jack Johnson(notes)), (captain Dustin Brown(notes)) - its more spread out, Richards told the NHLs official website. In Philadelphia, there was always that spotlight.

Sounds like someone wasn't too peachy in the spotlight.

No one said any of that after '10 (in fact, everyone said just the opposite). That's my point. If the Flyers did well, Richards was the next Bobby Clarke. If they struggled, he was overwhelmed.

On another note, I'm loving the Jagr/Giroux/JVR line

Nah they have the local broadcast, I'm on the west coast though so I won't get that but NHL Network usually just streams either the Boston or Chicago feed, a lot of the times they use the Chicago local feed so I'm guessing that will be the case tonight.

Ahh ok. I think NHL Network normally uses the home feed, so you should get the Hawks guys. You'll probably put the game on mute if you get the Bruins feed because Jack Edwards is a ridiculous homer. :lol

The only thing I have to add to the Richards talk is that he shouldn't have been made the captain. He is a hell of a player and one of the better forwards on the penalty kill in the league but he couldn't handle the pressure here.

Flyers need to stop committing penalties if they want to go 82-0

So Hossa looks to be out. And for some reason it seems like it's going to be Kane with Carcillo and Stalberg on 2nd line. That is going to be one disaster of a line defensively. Bolland, Frolik, and Bickell should get more minutes than that shitshow, and Kane should be playing with Toews. What is going on with this coaching staff?

I agree that they gave him the "C" too early. It should be noted that both Homer and Stevens requested Richards become the captain. The first time, Richards said "no" and they gave it to Jason Smith. The next year they wore him down during the offseason.......

Frustrating game to watch. The bad penalties (when will this get fixed?) killed the momentum in the building.

I will say I wasn't too upset that Richards set up the game winner

I thought Sharp played well tonight. Had some decent opportunities. Toews doesn't look good right now. He's just a bit off. Seabs and Hammer were the best pairing, IMO.

The thing that bothers me, is that Kane was clearly the best player on the ice tonight; created most of the Hawks chances. Yet, Q pairs him with Stalberg and Carcillo? When the tide started to turn toward the Bruins, he needed to mix things up and put Kane with Toews & Sharp to try to work some of their magic.

Toronto with a character win last night.

Reimer got hung out to dry for about 3 minutes which put them down 2-0 early in the first. The Leafs battled back and played a really solid game otherwise.

Kessel had 3 points and looked really solid. He's playing a rather impressive two way game.

I'm not saying they're good this year, as the same thing happened last year. All I'm saying is I hope they can keep this level of play up.

The problem I had with Richards is that he was constantly compared to Sid and should never have been in the same sentence. He obviously was not a great captain. The Flyers traded him away and he is young. That alone says something about the type of player and person he is.

This is the reaction I would expect. He had to have destroyed that locker room for him to be traded. It doesn't make much sense otherwise to trade away your captain at a young age.

You talking about the first Bruins goal? Because it was a bad bounce off the boards and Frolik had no chance. Frolik had a decent game, I thought.

Stalberg was bad, you're right. However, it was his first action in a few weeks you have to expect him to be rusty. The mistake was in putting him on a line with Kane.

Agreed about the line. But Frolik honestly made no good attempt to try and break up that play (which he rightfully could have). And any clue on why Hossa got scratched? Watching Scott was absolutely brutal.

You are right. Richards was a much better Olympian ;)

Let's be honest, you hate anyone that is compared to your golden boy.

The Flyers traded him away because they needed cap space/affordable role players and he was the only player on the roster that could be moved and net something meaningful in return.

This is the reaction I would expect. He had to have destroyed that locker room for him to be traded. It doesn't make much sense otherwise to trade away your captain at a young age.

As much as you would like to believe that to be true, it just isn't. Homer wouldn't have been close to tears if Richards was the cancer you make him out to be. The Flyers also don't post a "Thank You" message during the game if that was true.

I was at Lindros' first game back in Philly and it was night and day between the atmosphere at that game and the game last night.

Are you Mike Richards? If Holmgren wanted to keep Richards he could have.

Nah, I'm only his agent.

The Flyers are only $500,000 under the cap. What other big salary player could they have moved and gotten anything useful in return?

The Flyers just didn't trade Richards for cap space.

By trading the Richards the Flyers......

Got the #1 prospect not in the NHL

Had money to sign JVR long term

Had money to sign Jagr

Got Simmons

The Flyers needed younger (ie cheaper) talent and needed bodies to fill out their roster. Again, the only player on the Flyers that Homer could move that would net him a favorable return was Richards.

Richards wasn't the best person for the "C" (espec with Pronger on the team). That said, he wasn't a cancer on the team and no one is denying what an asset he was for the Flyers. So, you really think that Homer moved him because he wasn't the best "C"/didn't handle the media that well? Really? You really think that?

It was actually a situation very much like Ubaldo Jimenez. The offer was too good to pass up given what Homer wanted to do with the roster.

Hossa not practicing today with the Hawks.

So naturally Kane is centering a line with two 4th-liners/borderline NHL players in Olesz and Carcillo. What a waste of talent, and meanwhile Brunette is weighing down the 1st line with Sharp and Toews, neither of whom are in "midseason" form. Clearly this team is short a top-6 FW or C.

While you all know my complete disdain for ESPN, I don't see anything wrong with the rankings. After all, they are just power rankings. The Avs, Islanders, and Leafs have looked good so far, although I do see the Islanders dropping off.

I actually think the Avs and Leafs are more likely to drop off than the Islanders. It would not shock me at all to see the Islanders sneak in the playoffs. Their first line has been awesome so far this year.

Islanders are still young, but regardless I hope they keep it up. Tavares and Kessel have really helped my fantasy team this week. :lol:lol:lol

I don't see what's wrong with ESPN's power rankings... they are based on how a team did the previous week, and those teams on the list had pretty damn good weeks.

I think those teams need to prove more to make that much of a jump. I have a hard time putting those three teams over Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Boston, regardless of how the teams performed over the first week.

thank you for the vote of confidence. It was a great first week and that first line is clicking. Tavares is so much stronger on the puck and his skating is so improved. I had hope for 75 points from him this year. Now, more than a point per game looks dooable. Great to have Streit back.

As long as we don't drop more than 10 spots from there rest of the reason, I'll be very happy. I had us just missing the playoffs but with some good fortune like health, quality goaltending and special teams, it would need be far fetched to get to the 7th spot. Still a tough division a lot of games vs. Flyers (who we never beat) and the Pens. nothing is a given yet, far from it.

I'm generally not a fan of teams trying to redesign "throwback" uniforms. Just seems a bit forced with no real meaning behind it other than making something different that people will buy. While I don't hate the Pens WC jerseys from last year, I was kind of indifferent overall. They at least incorporated the old emblem that never showed up on a uniform before.

The general design of the Rags uniforms seem to resemble their initial design aside from the emblem. Not sure why they didn't go for a direct throwback design like this:

http://nhluniforms.com/Rangers/Images/Rangers01.png

The Flyers uniform doesn't do much for me either but I'm not too sure what they could have done differently between already sporting a throwback uniform of sorts currently.

They certainly do have a lot to prove, I agree. The power rankings are not predictions for the playoffs or who the new best team in the world is. It's simply a reflection of how a team performed over the past week. If one of those teams tanks next week, don't be surprised to find them back at the bottom. It's measuring over a very small time.

In any case, I do see things starting to level out as teams reach the 10-15 game mark. The Bruins will be back to their winning ways, and the Isles, Leafs, and Avs will start to lose a few. I love seeing the Avs have some success, and like I've said during pre-season, the Isles are damn fun to watch.

I guess we're just interpretting how the list should be compiled differently. Personally, I think that the power rankings should be based on how good the teams actually are, rather than just their performance over one week.

And that's cool, my friend. I think we both agree things will level out as they go along.

Although I do see the Isles and the Avs with a long possibility of sneaking into the playoffs. As long as the Avs can shore up that defense a bit.

The Avs defense is my biggest concern for them, as well as seeing how Varlamov can carry the load in net for them the whole season. But there's no denying that Duchene and Stastny are 2 great centers to build around and Landeskog has looked very good so far.
