Boston singed Chad Johnson to back up Rask? Love that signing, he has been incredibly underrated in the affiliates of the Rangers and Coyotes the past few years.

:thumbsup Clowe and Clarkson aren't nearly the type of player Lecavalier is, which I agree is amazing that they are making the amount of money that they are. Simply astounding.

And just to be clear; I wasn't intending to jump all over Vinny way back in my original post where I called them lost as an organization. It's not just because of him. Yes, he's getting older (I wouldn't call him past his prime yet, but it's certainly getting there), but I still think that if he hits his stride we can see him score 50-60, and that's not a bad thing.

Again, what I don't like is a lack of organizational direction. You already have a 30-something year old who was also a former captain who was brought in for leadership and point production, and you buy him out and sign ANOTHER 30-something year old former captain for his leadership and point production? I know Vinny makes a little less, but moves like that show me the Flyers are signing guys just to sign guys. Like I said before, rolling the dice to see how it works.

Ilya Bryzgalov is signed to this long term deal worth a fortune and is bought out two years later? I'm sorry, but that's just further proof of a lack of direction. Buyouts are traded in like coupons. And forgive me if I'm more than just a teensy bit skeptical about the tandem of Mason and Emery.

Mark Streit? C'mon. For all this young talent they apparently have in the pipeline, they're certainly letting their roster spots (and salary cap space) be taken by 30-something vets.

Again, sorry for bashing on the Flyers a bit, but that's the way the convo went. We could certainly be having almost this same conversation about a couple different teams right now... my team being FAR from exempt.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

Some notable captaincy vacancies this year. Any guesses who gets the 'C'? I'm thinking:

BUF: Stafford or Vanek. Probably Stafford. Vanek is their star, but doesn't seem like captain material. Of course, I said the same thing about Hank Sedin.

CAL: Hmmm... gonna go with Glencross. Perhaps Cammalleri, but I'll stick with Glencross.

DAL: Benn or Robidas, depending on if they want to go the vet route or the more popular young-star route. I'm gonna say Benn. Would've easily been Eriksson if he was still around.

EDM: Like the Stars, I can see them going either vet or youngster. If vet, look no further than Andrew Ference. He's everything you want in a leader. If young, I would think Hall or Eberle. I kind of want to say Eberle, but I think it will be Hall.

NYI: Tavares. No question. Okposo, once a front-runner in my mind, now a distant second.

TBL: We talked about this before, and I think it will be Stamkos. However, I think it would be way cool to give it to St. Louis until he retires, then hand it off to Stamkos. Will it happen? Probably not, but it would be cool.

Sorry John, have to 100% disagree with you here. You know I have much love and respect for you, but your coming off as a big time homer.

Emery was half good because he had arguably the best defensive corps in front of him all season (same goes for Crawford). In today's NHL, you don't need a Hasek or Roy...you need defenseman that can solidify the back end while simultaneously moving the puck up ice and through the neutral zone. The Flyers failed to address that, which was their biggest freakin need. This is a team that used both it's compliance buy outs already, and has 14 players signed next season (0 goaltenders) and only $12 million in cap space to fill out the rest of the roster! And even worse, there is almost 0 depth talent to bring up to fill up spots!

Again, the defense wasn't healthy. This is a good unit when healthy.

Quote:

They want to win every year, I get that, but by signing Lecavalier they basically put the writing on the wall for an incredibly talented kid in Brayden Schenn to go elsewhere after this season. At some point, you have to abandon the "WIN NOW" mentality when it's just not there, and start saving cap space for the future. Maybe the signing of Lecavalier and Streit doesn't cripple them this season, but what about after that? The modern day NHL isn't about just "what's next year look like"? Every team has to have a 1, 3, 5, and 10 year plan at all times. The Flyers looking lost is mostly because of that. None of what they are doing makes sense long term or short term. Did they get much better next season? Not really. Swapped Briere for Lecavalier and Gustafsson with Streit, and replaced Bryz with Emery/Mason.
First off, Schenn and Lecavalier can both play center and wing. Schenn is gonna play LW with Lecavalier at C. Hardly chasing him out at all.

Secondly, Streit > Gustafsson, and I'm one to actually support Gus' development (poor man's Kimmo).

Thirdly, they now have two goalies, not one. You're right, it's not so much a good goalie that wins as a good defense. But like I said, this defense isn't a problem if it's healthy. Also, you can't expect a goalie to play 95% of the games anymore. That's what Bryz was doing until they acquired Mason. Both goalies will be able to stay fresh.

Quote:

Blame the Flyers issues on a 48 game season all you want, but that team not only finished poorly, but looked AWFUL. I don't buy into this plan at all. At it's best, it's lipstick on a pig, and a dying pig at that. They keep feeding that dying, lipsticked pig as much old food as they possibly can without it exploding and hoping it can run a marathon.

That analogy is ridiculous.

Anyway, I don't buy what they're selling. Sure, maybe they'll contend this year a little bit, be more competitive...as long as Emery and Mason work out (which I doubt)...but their 3-ish year plan looks like absolute dog shit.
Then let's just wait and see. You can't predict everything, especially based off of a 48-game season. I'm not budging on this and neither are you. But I do have the advantage of seeing this team play 82 games a year so I wouldn't sit here and tell you all about Chicago or Colorado for the same reason haha.

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

I am not a fan of the Clarkson signing. 7 years is absurd. I haven't seen the guy play very much but I get the feeling he will start to wear down by year 3 or 4 of that contract. I go onto a Leafs message board and they were touting how exciting it was to finally win the big contract of the off season. Ack. I suppose the salary cap is alright? if he plays the rough and tumble game while potting 30 goals, but I don't think he will.

I am interested to see the line of Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson. I feel like if they all mesh together relatively well, they will be one of the better 2nd lines in the league, but I don't know if they can do it. Kadri fell off at the end of the year, like he was tired and that scares me. Lupul has to stay healthy. I don't know if he can.

Their d-corp looks scary weak. Phaneuf is not a number 1 d-man. He's a #2 on almost every team but he is also not a #1 on most every team. I get the feeling that next year is going to be a bit of a tough year for the Leafs. The expectations are higher and as a Leaf fan for the better part of my conscious years, I know that when the expectations are raised they tend to disappoint.

Yeah some of those were deals to get a better player or one to help win. Iggy was traded to get a guy who was the playoff mvp in 99. Forsberg was for Lindros. While Amonte and Hull were better than what the teams got back, both teams won a Cup while Chicago and St Louis did not. To get something you have to give something. It's not giving up.

Ummm... I'd like to talk about this a little more if we could?

I swear, for the last 10 years or so of his career (maybe longer?) this guy was the biggest douche in the league. Not a shift passed by that he wasn't whining to someone. It's like he was saying, "Hey, I'm the oldest guy in the league. RESPECT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I rolled my eyes big time when they won their last Cup and he was like the third person to hoist it after hardly playing at all (and being a detriment to the team when he was playing). You know he was literally shoving to get the front of the line.

Whereas you had people like Joe Sakic, Yzerman, Lidstrom, Brind'Amour, etc. that earned respect by the way they played and carried themselves on and off the ice. Chelios was left begging for it.

I don't have a lot of animosity towards too many players - or people - in general. But Chelios really rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, I donno. If you're choosing Rask over extending Seguin I'd have to say that's a mistake. Always take the dynamic goal-scorer.

The thing I love about people is how they'll say "it will be a great deal for the Bruins if he keeps up his current level of play." Well no shit. Who knows how he will be in 4-5 years.

Yeah man, the only 5+ year goalie contract that seems to have worked out since the lockout is Brodeur at 6 years.

I generally don't like goalie cap hits in today's NHL above $5 mil either, but this Rask deal makes Quick look like a bargain.

Oh dear Lord I forgot about that...8 years $100 million.

I look forward to more opportunities of Tuuka kamikazing into many sideboards for the next eight years.

I read his agents are looking for 10/100 - league max; that would make him the highest paid player in the league.

Guy does that when he's mad or happy, he took quite the tumble this year after the comeback game 7 against the Leaves.

Isn't 8 years the max under the new CBA?

Yes, 8 years. I learned a lot about contract negations over the past 2 days. My head hurts and I wasn't even involved. Pretty interesting stuff, would make for a great reality show. But, that's a hockey fan talking and since no one likes hockey it'd be a flop.

Would be an interesting story on CSNBC or NHLN during the off season at least.

I'd love to see it. There was this documentary thing CBC did back in like 98 that showed part of it. I'll try to find it.

Here we are a week later and Damien Brunner is still unsigned. Thought he was worth more than the $2.5-3mil the Wings offered for 2-3 years.

I'm just wondering how it could POSSIBLY be that Bryzgalov doesn't have a team yet. He must still be trying to score a try-out with the All-Universe team he created in his head. My guess is his final destination ends up being Calgary or one of the Floridas. Who knows, maybe even the Islanders. What say you, Sal?

You're absolutely right. It'd be 8/80 then. I remember reading his agents wanting to get him an AAV of 10 million.

Vanderbeeks pocket is certainly a few tons heavier now. Kovy was due to make a half bajillion bucks over the next 11 years.

Would have been nice to know before Clarkson went buh-bye

Ilya Kovalchuk just gave NJ a giant middle finger.

I mean, it's his life and he needs to do what's best for him and his family, but wow.

TMoore4075 07-11-2013 04:55 PM

Re: The NHL 2013-14 Thread

I just looked up what his cap recapture hit will be and it's barely anything because he's retiring now and the team is not benefiting from the dead years at the end. $250k per year until the end of the contract.

Still it's a wow moment for sure.

them Russians sure a little weird and quirky, no?

Why couldn't family be here? He'll be back in a year. Walking away from a lot of money.

Good news for the Islanders and the rest of the easterners fighting for the last few playoff spots next year.

And that forfeited draft pick, that NJ should have forfeited last year when they got pick #29, will really hurt when it's a lottery pick again next year.

We already signed Nabokov to be the #1 for 1 more year and with all but 1 important rfa in Bailey already signed, we are at the cap floor already. I doubt we will add any more payroll of significance, if any. Roster is pretty much set.

While I understand where JR is coming from, Kovy played for the money he got. This is a head scratcher but a bigger dick move would have to waited a couple more years and done it. Taken more of their money and the cap recapture penalty would be a lot higher.

Kovy this is awesome. First, because he is a dick! Second, because he was on the Devils! Third, because it spices up the off season in such a huge way!

From an NHL fan standpoint, sorry Devils fans! Really sucks and hurts the team for sure.

From a Rangers fan standpoint, hahahHAHAAaaahahahaha GOOD!

I haven't forgot the unreal taunting from two seasons ago when NJ knocked out NY!;)
