2010: Hawks
2011: Bruins
2012: Kings
2013: Hawks (over the Bruins)
2014: Kings
2015: Hawks
2016: Pens
2017: Pens vs Preds

That I can understand. I'm biased so I'm not upset ;)

But, the same thing has been happening in the NFL too. The same 5 teams have been in the super bowl for the AFC for the last 20 years.

With that said if you would ask me whether or not I wanted to watch the Pats or the effing Jaguars or Bills in the super bowl?

Pats every time because I want to watch good football.

Bottom line is that there are elite teams in sports. Those teams find ways to win titles. Fans like to see the surprise team sneak up there and win one every now and then. For the most part, in a 5-10 year period, it is the same teams with those elite players making the finals over and over again.

NBA is the most obvious about this. West: Warriors right now, was Spurs and Lakers before that. East: What ever team James plays for. Surprise: Mavs getting it done that one year.

NFL: Pats are obvious, but the Giants, Pitt and Packers and what ever team Payton was on.

Nascar: Jimmy Johnson and Smoke won all of the titles in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 & 2016 with the ones in bold being Johnson. Before that Gordon won 4 and before that Earnhardt won 7 and before that Petty won 7.

NHL: The list is above in the quote.

Honestly, as a hockey fan it can be depressing if you are not a fan of an elite team. You are basically hoping that your team can be that surprise and win just one cup randomly or you hope that they suck hard enough to draft themselves into becoming one of the elite teams.

The Rangers were that surprise team in 1994. They were close to being one of the surprises in 2014, but they lost to an elite team. The Rangers have been good for about 10 years, but they were never elite and that makes all the difference.

The Caps are unfortunately the same. Ovi is maybe one the "goodest" players of all time, but Crosby is elite. The difference it that one is about to play in his 4th Cup final with chance of winning his 3rd and he shits gold internationally, whereas the other has always been an arms-length away from success.

I also think this is why teams have such long championship droughts. It is really hard to become elite in the salary cap era. You literally have to either already be elite or suck hard for along time. Being good is honestly the worst thing that can happen to a franchise. It prolongs droughts because you will never break through the wall to greatness with what you have, but what you have will prevent you from drafting and rebuilding.

Pretty much perfect other than the lack of replay on the Kessel shot and the towels on the ice

Place was shaking during the air raid siren

It's not going to work for a couple of reasons.

1. Scott Paulsen said this once on an NFL network documentary about traveling Steelers fans...

The collapse of the steel industry in Pittsburgh happened as the same time as the Super Steelers of the 70's. As families left western PA for other jobs they took their Steelers (and Pirates, and Pens) fandom with them and their kids grew up as Pittsburgh fans.

The great myth is that Pittsburgh fans travel well. That's not it all.... (and this is Paulsen's quote), "We're already there!"

It's true. I worked with a guy who lived in Chicago. His family moved away from Pittsburgh when he was ten years old. He's as big of a Steelers and Pens fan as they come.

2. Hardcore fans that do "travel well" will hit up stub hub.

Does anyone outside of the DC area care about the Capitals?

Hockey is largely a regional sport. You don't have many fans of teams outside of their local area like you might see a fan of the Cowboys outside of Texas or Yankees outside of NYC.

Yes, there are a lot of Caps fans outside the DC area. Ovi's star power did help with that.

This may be true for places like Nashville, California and Florida, but places like cincy, Cleveland, Baltimore/DC, Philly and Columbus usually have tons of pittsburghers that actually travel.

Myself included.

It's ok, you can admit you like a Penguin. :lol Pens take only as many shots as they need.

Seriously, though, Pens got way outplayed most of the night. Woof. Must be better. But Rinne letting in 4 out of 11. Also woof.

I trust Sullivan to make adjustments and figure it out. But Nashville is really good. I'd still be feeling good if I were them despite the loss.

Fuck the Blackhawks. Pens scored more goals last night then you guys did all series. Funny to hear you bitching from home.

Also, how did every call go in Nashville's favor? A goal called back after the Preds were "offsides" even though they lost possession, regained it, and scored after 13 seconds of zone time. The rule was made to stop the Duchene type goal and instead of used to steal a goal away in a game that ended up being a one goal game. Not only that, but that was a disputable offsides and the call on the ice should have stood.

Also, Barbs questions is referring to people outside of western PA pulling for the Pens to win another Cup. Whereas excitingjae was asking if a team has fans outside of its region. Two different questions with two different answers.

Question 1: Is anyone happy about the Pens possibly winning a cup that does not live in western PA?

Answer: Probably not. Unless you really hate the Preds (post about melting over the preds goes here and is something along the lines of: "Suban is a dirty cheat, Preds get all the calls, they are scumbags go Pens, I am very angry that the Hawks got swept"), I would imagine the rest of the causal fans would like to see someone new win the Cup.

Question 2: Does anyone outside of DC like the Caps.

Answer: Yes, yes they do. The Caps have a lot of fans and they have not annoyed everyone by winning many...caugh...or any...cough...Cups. The longer Ovi goes without winning a cup, the more fans that don't hate will want to see him win one.

This is why playing prevent defense is terrible in any sport. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Put up 7 if you have to. This is the SCF. The Preds aren't going to quit down by three with 40 minutes to play.

I think now Pens fans will see why I have been constantly griping that almost every call goes in trashville's favor, it is just pathetic how many calls they get and what they do not get called for. You need to just sit back, take a deep breath and just enjoy the sport. I mean, yea I don't like the Pens on my side either, but this is just... weird.

At least the Caps made some noise before being a total disappointment.

Besides, the Hawks won three fucking Cups the last six years. No one should be this angry. Have a Coke and a smile, mother fucker! (Love Eddie Murphy.)

Maybe it's because I haven't really paid that close of attention, but I watched the E:60 segment on SC yesterday morning about Subban. He didn't seem like that bad of a guy. Of course there was a bit with Melrose saying he's really inconsistent.

Then again, I haven't paid that close of attention to Montreal and Nashville over the last few years.

I'm not sure I get the hate.

I used to hate Subban when he was in Montreal years ago. He was a young player, cocky, and came off like a jerk on the ice. But I read, see and hear so many great accounts of the person he is and I cooled greatly on that hate in Montreal. I was excited he was traded because now I can openly root for the guy. He's just fun to watch. This is a game. It's supposed to be fun. Why do we have to take shit so seriously? That's another reason Milbury can fuck right off his high horse.

That's kind of what I thought. He came across as I a guy fans hate because he doesn't play for your team. But, if he did play for your team he'd probably be your favorite player.

Here's my thing with Subban, and admittedly where I need to dial back my vitriol towards him: He is probably my least favorite player in the NHL - I still hold to that - but I've had to accept that it's not his fault that I dislike him.

I've always maintained that the reason I don't like him is that he's not nearly as good as advertised. He's got a great shot, yes, but he's not a great skater, he makes dumb decisions, especially in his own zone, he's not skilled enough defensively IMO to be a top-tier defenseman, etc... In a word, he's overrated. But what I've had to realize is that he's not overrating himself. He's not advertising himself as the #1 defenseman in the game. PK Subban, as much as I don't like the way he plays, comes out and plays his game. The people I should be hating on are all those that overrate him. Because yes, they're wrong. Those that talk about him as one of the best defenseman in the NHL are out of their minds, but HE'S not one of the people saying that (as far as I know).

And sure he's cocky, brash, etc. But he's also extremely charitable (wasn't it like $10 million to that children's hospital??), warm with fans, fun, a great community guy. He's the perfect personality for a city like Nashville that is absolutely nuts for their hockey team.

Is he still one of my least favorite players in the NHL? You bet. Could I easily rattle off at least 20 d-men I'd take over him? Yep, probably 30. Does he belong anywhere near a Norris Trophy ballot? Nope, IMO. But do I need to dial back personal attacks on him a little? You bet.

I still think the Weber trade was better for Montreal as I agree. I like Subban a lot but he makes some head scratchingly bad decisions with the puck.

throwing shit on the ice is dumb, but again, the view they showed the crowd looked like a clear good goal, so not surprising people are gonna react poorly. Video screen guy needs to be better in that situation.

From WPXI:

JUST IN: Here's how Predators fan Jacob Waddell got the catfish into PPG Paints Arena last night:
Waddell told police he bought the catfish in Tennessee, vacuum sealed it and drove it up to Pittsburgh. He then put the catfish IN HIS COMPRESSION SHORTS to sneak it into the arena. You can't make this stuff up.

So bad, right?

I think Weber was better for the Predators (the team), but Subban is better for Nashville (the city/hockey community). If that makes sense.

I agree he should be charged. Can't have nitwits throwing shit onto the ice. Same goes for the jagoffs in Game 7.

Although Ron Cook is a curmudgeonly jackass who doesn't know squat about hockey. Fine and probation and call it a day.

If this was European soccer that dude would get a lifetime ban and the Preds as an organization would get fined.

Wings fans throw octopi, Panthers fans used to throw rats.. its kind of just one of those weird hockey things.

Charging a guy for a crime for something so innocuous is totally out of line.

Where do you draw the line? Dead fish ok? Bottles and batteries not?

Things that are dangerous is where the line is drawn. Even throwing a plastic cup or something doesnt deserve actual punishment from the law... you get kicked out of the arena and arent allowed back, then that is that.

He did it during a stoppage so I dont see any harm at all.

If youre throwing batteries/glass bottles or heavy stuff that can actually hurt people, and are clearly trying to (ie throwing @ the bench or whatever) then maybe go forward with real punishment.

I mean, throwing hats on the ice is literally one of the best traditions in hockey. :lol

I love that wings fans throw the octopus personally, I think its a cool tradition.

There's a difference between a team's tradition and throwing something that disrupts play or shows immaturity. The octopus is fine in Detroit, as are hat tricks everywhere.

The catfish is an awesome tradition they've had for 14 years, and by doing so on the road in the team's first Cup final adds to how much fun they're simply having with this. We have a new, passionate and fun fanbse in the NHL. It was their way of saying, "hey, we're here and we want to mix it up with the Pens by showing off our silly traditions."

Christ, can't people have fun with this game anymore?

This is a bunch of malarkey.

Dude was just trying to have fun. Can you imagine how many catfish are going to be thrown on the ice now on Game 3? I'm excited for the Crosby melt though

Also, there was a much bigger threat to woman at the Penns game last night than a freaking catfish

I'm betting catfish guy was put up by some nashville radio station or something. it makes no sense to purchase a SCF ticket, and then halfway during the game, throw a catfish on the ice. So much money wasted.
