Here's something somewhat realistic I think we might see from the Blackhawks next season, assuming a $62.2 million cap like is being reported in some places:

You only feel Phoenix has a better chance to succeed because they've done better recently. If the Thrashers were any good they would draw more fans, better TV numbers etc.

No teams do well in Atlanta. Even if they were winning the Thrashers wouldn't draw.

No they wouldn't. They were good the first half the season and have some young exciting players but no one down there gave a shit.

The Hawks have had playoff success. They're absolutely desperate to get people in the building, and something tells me there's more basketball fans in Atlanta than hockey fans.

Cole's not leaving the Canes. He works there and seems to like it. He stunk in Edmonton and came back to Carolina and fit back in pretty quickly.

This ^. It's a terrible sports town. The transplant thing hurts. My friends don't care about seeing the Thrashers play anyone except the Wings. Then they'll go downtown to see them. This whole put a winning product on the ice is all well and good but with teams like the Pens, Flyers, Caps, Bruins, Habs and probably TBL now being playoff teams every year the window to be a playoff team is pretty small. To be relevant in that market you need to win and I don't see them getting into the playoffs anytime soon and the longer you go without success the more the people there will not even think about you which makes them less viable. There is no one who wants to own the team there at least not legitimate people. The Ducks were owned by Disney, Huizinga owned the Panthers. Big time people with big money and they eventually backed out. You need owners with big pockets, a passion for the game and passion for the game in that market. This is not an investment like the NBA can be and the NFL is. It's more of a job than that, especially in the south. That's why when I read about Lil Jon and Bruckheimer I laughed cause neither of them would be hands on owners it would just be name recognition which would wear off after a while. The same way the novelty of hockey in Miami and Atlanta did when those teams weren't winning.

We had a big arguement this weekend in my family about wheter Ruff should be fired. While he's been there a long time and never won he's overachieved for the most part. Well he did re-sign didn't he? He's a Barry Trotz type. Not given much to work with too often but gets the most and more out of his players usually. If the new owner starts putting money into the team and they don't get past the level they are at now then maybe he'll get fired but it's not his fault the team couldn't or wouldn't re-sign players.

This is what I thought too... Ruff is a good coach, and with the new owner willing to commit $$$$ Buffalo should be looking good shortly!

Yeah my thoughs exactly. In '06 which was arguably his best team he lost his top 4 D-men in the playoffs. There's only so much a coach can do in that scenario. If the new owner spends the money he's talking about spending and they still don't get results then I'm all for a change but at this point he still deserves the job

No news on that yet. With Jimmy Howard's at $2.25 a year for two years I'd guess around that since they are in pretty similar situations.

edit: 8mil total so $2.6mil a year. Surprises me it's that high but if he's even better as time goes on it's a good deal.

I didn't think Crawford would get this much higher than $2 mil, but anything under $3 I am able to deal with. Great to have him signed now. The Hawks have about $8 mil in cap space with 6-7 guys left. I think Hjalmarrson will be gone and we will bring in someone much cheaper to be Campbell's safety net (Sopel).

Not according to what I read. It would be the same as an expansion fee and does not count as hockey related revenue. The $60mil however would probably help cover the losses of the Coyotes that the $25mil from Glendale did not.

bonzo48280 05-20-2011 10:52 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Alexander Salak gets new deal

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed goalie prospect Alexander Salak to a two-year deal worth about $600,000 per year, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The Blackhawks have yet to make an official announcement regarding the deal.

Salak, 24, was acquired in a trade with the Florida Panthers in February for Jack Skille and other prospects. The Hawks also acquired Michael Frolik in the trade.

Salak made his NHL debut in 2009, appearing in two games for the Panthers. He was loaned to Färjestad BK of the Swedish Elite League for the 2010-11 season.

The deal is a one-way contract, according to the source. It makes Salak the front runner to be Corey Crawford's back-up. Crawford signed a new three-year contract extension on Thursday.

Salak's cap hit was $1.3, so now that frees up another $700k and gives a good estimation into who may be backing up Crawford for the next two years.

I'm also fooling around with CapGeek right now, and I set the Cap at $62, even though I think it will go higher than that. Got rid of Hjalmarsson, brought in somebody for $1.5 mil (just used Sopel :lol), gave Campoli $1.7, Frolik $1.5, and Brouwer $1.2. That leaves me 20 players and I still have $4,931,966 in cap space. My point is that if the Cap goes higher than 62, which a lot of people are saying it will, and the Hawks can get rid of Hjalmarsson and bring in somebody cheaper to do his job (safety net for Campbell) then I think the Hawks can have a lot of space to sign a real good second line center or some wingers.

Not with the 3.5 million cap hit and the season he had last year. The guy is like Happy Gilmore from the point, without the power. He's a nearly 4 million dollar shot blocker with a really good active stick.

This is what I just put together with a signing of 0 outside UFA's or RFA's:

Quote:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Patrick Kane ($6.300m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Bryan Bickell ($0.541m)
Ben Smith ($0.812m) / Marcus Kruger ($0.900m) / Michael Frolik ($1.275m)
Troy Brouwer ($1.400m) / Ryan Johnson ($0.500m) / Jeremy Morin ($0.886m)

DEFENSEMEN
Brian Campbell ($7.142m) / Brent Seabrook ($5.800m)
Duncan Keith ($5.538m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)
Nick Leddy ($1.116m) / Chris Campoli ($1.300m)
/ John Scott ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($2.666m) / Alexander Salak ($0.600m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $62,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,643,004; BONUSES: $965,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $2,356,996
(sorry guys, spoilers don't work when I quote someone)

Obviously the lines are jumbled, but just an idea of players. Very, very possible, leaving us $2.35 in cap space to sign one forward. We're in no desperate need to get rid of cap space, and by the Crawford signing, I think Bowman has a decent idea of what the cap will look like next year. I'm not worried about shaving Hammer's deal, and would hate to see him go. I think he still has potential.

I would like to see Krueger in the AHL next season. He is not NHL ready, and I highly doubt he will be next year either. I would rather cut him off the roster, decide if Bolland is your #2 or #3 center, and sign the other one.

Disagree 100%. And I highly, highly doubt Kruger spends any time in the AHL. Bowman wanted Kruger on the roster at the beginning of LAST season, and has been said to have a really high learning curve. I don't think Kruger wants to play in the AHL, which he might have done last year had he stayed here instead of going overseas.

Bowman loves the kid. As do I. He showed lots of promise in that Vancouver series, and just needs time to adjust. A good offseason with the guys will be good for him and his game. He's been said 100 times to be like Dave Bolland, which I love. He gets a lot done without really being noticed. For his cap hit, keep him up with the Hawks.

You sir are correct. I have a feeling Bettman wished he had taken that $50mil hard cap not linked to league wide revenue the NHLPA had proposed. Lines between small market and large market are blurred because they are miles apart now.

Good news for the people of Winnipeg this morning on Victoria Day in Canada but not so good for Atlanta:

If Lidstrom leaves you go balls out and offer sheet Weber. They might also go trade route. They would have all kinds of money to work with. If he's back they still have good money and the kid Brendan Smith in Grand Rapids who's ready for the NHL. Will be an interesting summer for me.

The Preds would match almost anything. Wings have plenty of UFA options on D thankfully. Wouldn't mind getting rid of Hidler to free up some money and five the kids a shot. Would also give you a little money for an in-season trade if needed.

That's not going to happen.

Wings sure have some interesting choices. Really would help them if Lindstrom announced his choice sooner than later.

Pretty weak UFA d-man field this year. Might cause the Wings to overpay someone.

Wings sure have some interesting choices. Really would help them if Lindstrom announced his choice sooner than later.

Pretty weak UFA d-man field this year. Might cause the Wings to overpay someone.

Lidstrom has said he'll let them know before July 1st and probably will by the draft. He's not Scott Niedermeyer.

The defenseman out there aren't all bad. Not Rafalski types but Pitkanen, Ehrhoff, Bieksa, Wisniewski, Kaberle (not thanks), or maybe they take a shot at Eric Brewer. Then there is always the trade route of a guy like Bogosian. They have found ways to resurrect some guys careers. Cleary, Bertuzzi, Eaves, Miller, Stuart. I am not worried at all. Unlike most Wings fans who think they know better than Ken Holland and get made when he doesn't sign an enforcer I have 100% faith in him because if you would have told me in 1998 that they'd win a Cup in 08 and still be challenging for one in 2011 I'd say you were crazy.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I love this idea from Friedman:

7) How about this scenario: with the extra cap room, Holland makes a run at Brad Richards. Imagine giving Mike Babcock the ability to play around with Richards, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg - yikes. Trade the maddening Valtteri Filppula and then work on your blue-line. Two reasons this won't happen: the Red Wings believe in spending money on defence first and, with a new CBA looming, this may be Richards' last chance to hit a contract Grand Slam.

Like he said probably wouldn't have happened but the Wings could pull it off. Trade Fil and with Rafi gone that's 9mil to spend. Brendan Smith coming up wont cost much money and then get another Dman for that extra money from the cap going up. It would be tight but could be done. Won't be....but could be.

Darren Ford of jetsowner.com has changed his Jets Meter to 100%. He wouldn't do that without very good news. It sounds like Atlanta moving is pretty damn close now.

^ That would be awesome. I know of a few people in Seattle that are Canucks fans but would surely love their own team. Selfishly I want a team out there because my wife is from Seattle and we are there about 2 times a year. So that would be solid. They have no arena though. That's the sticking point and part of the reason why they couldn't keep the Sonics.

Yeah the arena is the question. But if they can set that in motion and think it'll get built in a few years then maybe a solid owner trumps the arena for the short term. The arena is why I figured Portland was more likely. I'm very surprised Daly would even say anything like that. My guess is it has to be in regards to PHX. I guess maybe FLA but I dunno.

If it is PHX, then move the Panthers to Quebec when/if they get their new arena. The Isles stay put with a new arena and then you are much more stable as a league then you have ever been since they've gone to 30 teams.

I definitely want to keep Campoli. I assume his cap hit will stay about the same (1.4 million), so I'd love it if we resigned him to a 1-2 year deal at that number. Give that year or two for the 400 different defensemen we have coming up through the system to develop.

The defense was not the problem. They did a good job of limiting Vancouver's shots and keeping a very potent offense to the outside. What was the stat? Vancouver had less than 10 shots a period over 8 periods in the last few games? Something like that. IMO, White and Wallin were the best defensive pair of the last few games, and guys like Vlasic are vastly underrated. Did they make a few mistakes? Sure, but every defense does. If you truly watch them (their positioning, their pressure in the D-zone and o-zone), they are actually quite effective.

Heatley nailed it on the head, he didn't produce. Neither did the rest of the guys making the big bucks. Hell, Heatley was non-existent until last night. The Sharks team as a whole needs to learn how to dig deeper on a consistent basis, not just when their backs are against the wall facing elimination. They are deep offensively and defensively, have a goalie that - while not perfect - has won a Stanley Cup and gone to the CF in his first two seasons in the league, and a good coach. It's the attitude and work ethic that needs to change.

He actually had a decent conference final. Still a huge douche and I hope he never wins a Cup but statistically he was ok. Dany Heatley on the other hand...he was terrible.

Not until well into the season. Winnipeg/Manitoba will play in the SE for the upcoming year. Don't think we'll know until after the first of the year since we'll need the BoG meeting in December to have the official conversation. I think it'll be Detroit or Nashville. But I think the two teams fighting to go will be Detroit ro CBJ. I don't think the Preds will push to leave because they won't want to leave Detroit and Chicago. They have rivalries there.

The lateness of the deal getting done. The schedule is already getting finalized so realigning would have been a pain to get done. Plus I think they want to have a big discussion among of the owners about who is the right team to move and how the alignement in the west will work. Obviously a Central team is going East but there are a few options out West for who goes to the Central. The Wild or the Stars.
