The trade deadline is a shell of what it used to be. Not nearly as action packed.

He is a reliable fourth liner, pretty solid with the PK but some of the idiotic penalties he takes (often at the worst of times) will get on your nerves after a bit. Yeah, he is grinder on the boards type of guy but his hockey IQ isn't all that high. He's been in the league two full years and has already racked up a few fines and a suspension so DOPS considers him a repeat offender so if he does anything dumb you're gonna lose him for more than 2-5 minutes. Lets just say I was not exactly heartbroken to see him leave Chicago last season. Perhaps he has matured a bit since he was younger but who knows, some guys do some guys don't.

Yea - not sure why you would be super excited about Ryan Hartman when you just lost Simmonds

Also the return from Simmonds overall is less than ideal. Granted he's not a great player but still - with him being on the market that long you would expect something better

Well, in fairness I do not think Nashville will be giving Simmonds an offer sheet at years end because I doubt they have the cap space. So he's pretty much a rental guy who averages about half a point a game - so maybe he shores up the Preds third line and adds some punch but I would not exactly say this was a big deal so I understand why the Flyers got so little in return.

He's a third line player who is slow and doesn't score at even strength.

Simmonds is a shell of the player he used to be.

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

Nice return for Corey Crawford, got a win and even an assist. He showed a little rust but all in all he was solid! Kane continues to rack up points with a GWG with 12 seconds left and an assist tonight!

Edit: Drake Caggiula probably has a concussion (going through the protocol) - sucks because he was playing well on that top line with Kane and Toews.

Tavares got exactly what he deserved. I don’t blame Islanders fan even a little bit, nor do I find the reception to be particularly disrespectful.

Let’s shoot a hypothetical. Let’s say that like, 5 years ago, Alex Ovechkin had his contract run out. And he had accomplished even less than what he actually accomplished (like let’s pretend they didn’t win the first round every year and instead pretend they didn’t win any series at all). And leading into July 1, Ovie said over and over and over how much he loved DC and wanted to stay and couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else and great players play their whole careers in one place and blah blah blah. And the organization even went out of their way to upgrade their GM and head coach in an effort to build on that promise from Ovie that he would come back. And then when it came time to sign the line, Ovie went to play for Russia because that’s his boyhood dream and the pajamas he wore as a child.

I’d boo the shit out of him, too.

My selfish hope is that the Islanders spent all their energy last night and won’t have much left for an even more important game tonight. But I doubt that’s going to be the case.

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

That's a terrible take, imo. Tavares gave them what, 9 years of his best efforts? He earned the right to be a free agent and made a decision that was best for him. Those Isles fans should have showed their appreciation for what he did while he was there.

Sports are a business and loyalty is a myth. To think any differently is asinine.

...also, it wasn't pajamas - it was bed sheets. :p

so one thing I've always wondered is, what happens to all those unsold seats on Stubhub?

Case in point: The Penguins are playing the Sabres in Buffalo tonight and there are still around 900 tickets FS on Stubhub. For premium seats people are asking $90 - $200 each, and then you have the exorbitant SH fees in there too. Less than 11 hours until puck drop.

Not interested in this particular game but I've been watching the prices for the March 12th game against Dallas closely, and waiting for tickets in section 105 (right behind the player's benches) to drop down to like $50 each, and it hasn't happened yet, even though it's a Tuesday evening game and both teams are ehhhhhh.

The only real issue I have is the throwing of stuff at Tavares and onto the ice. That’s not really ok. And it’s true that sports are a business and loyalty is usually a myth. It’s not always, but most of the time it is. And it’s also true that the lack of actual accomplishment during his tenure there isn’t all, or even mostly, John’s fault. But I’m quite sure I would harbor similar feelings if the situation unfolded on my team, especially given the circumstances of the drama this summer. I’d boo my former star player, too.

I mean like you said, loyalty is a myth, right? He’s on the other team now, after all.

Edit: meant to quote swordo, thought I had

Islander fans have every reason to be upset. Its one thing if he goes off and just signs with another team. That's not what he did. Taveres kept the Islanders hopes up only to leave

Are you implying that fans are not bound by any sort of loyalty either? If so, I don't disagree one bit.

Those fans are well within their rights to boo, I just don't think he deserved it in any way. Tavares was the best thing to happen to that franchise in a long long time. It's not like he spit on the jersey leaving town, he didn't force a trade to get him out, he simply exercised his rights as a tenured member of the NHLPA.

I think some situations call for players to be booed mercilessly. This was not one of them.

Basically what JRS said. It’s the unnecessary drama that I didn’t care for. That’s not the same thing as simply exercising free agency, in my opinion. He didn’t need to string the fan base along with NBA-esque drama.

I agree with Barbs and JRS Numbers that it’s not necessarily the fact a guy is on a new team it’s how the departure is handled.

I don't think I've ever seen such hatred toward a former player in their first game back than I saw with the Isle in quite some time. Man, if that happened in Philly though...

Re: The NHL Thread: featuring Gritty, the regular season mascot champ.

I'm assuming Tavares didn't say anything in post-game interviews about the crowd, right? That's too bad.

If I were him and asked about the crowd, I would have said something to the effect: "Well, the crowd was great tonight. Probably the loudest I've ever heard it. It's too bad that it took me leaving to get them to come out and get riled up."

I think a lot of those seats belong to season-ticket holders who decide to go to any games they don't sell.
