Boy it sure is fun to watch Dustin play so far this year. Hope it keeps up, but this is exactly what I expected.

So, pretty much fuck Sidney Crosby.

Congrats Matty on the AVs matching last year's win total already. They are looking good so far.

Isles played some good hockey last night but not enough. Can't take shifts or periods off in this league and expect to win, especially with a young roster and teams out-talenting us.

Watching the Avs/Bruins highlights, Rask just looks uncomfortable in net.

didnt realize Preds did a banner raising in front of the crowd and with the team on the ice for their runner up banner.

Thats gotta be awkward for those players

Sadly, he tends to have those nights, you can tell in the first 10 minutes of a game if he's focused or not.

:lol It's early and I'm trying really hard not to get excited, but this team look completely different from last year. And... dare I say... does Sakic actually know what he's doing??

Case in point, their "island of misfit toys" first line:
* Nail Yakupov has 5 points already and is one of the most exciting Avs players to watch. Hard to believe he's the same guy as the past 5 years
* Sven Andrighetto, a no-name who came over from MTL at last year's deadline, quietly has 19 points in 23 games for the Avs dating back to then. Scored two goals last night
* Duchene is smiling, happy, seems motivated. And oh yeah, also has 5 points

In addition,
Varly is back and playing well.
Nemeth, who Sakic picked up on WAIVERS last week, has 3 assists in 4 games and is a +7.
The rest of the defense is playing reasonably well for who they are dressing. They held Boston to 9 shots through two periods last night. They are nowhere near the best in the league, but they are improving. EJ and Zadorov are a great first pair, and Nemeth might just be the ying to Tyson Barrie's yang.
Tyson Jost took a cheap shot from McQuaid last night, and Zadorov fought McQuaid right after he got out of the box. I'm on record as not always being down with that, but the fact that he did it says a lot about him and the team.
Oldest guy on the team is 31 (Soderberg)

Again, it's VERY early. This team is a ways off from competing for a Stanley Cup. But having watched them for these first 4 games, I'm encouraged and my faith in Joe has been partially restored. They are a very different team.

Re: The NHL Thread (Penns are garage league champs)

This Hawks/Wild game is odd. So much physicality and that is neither teams strong point. Both teams use speed, passing, finesse, etc, etc but not a whole lot of huge checks but there has been a bunch on them in the first. The first is also noteworthy because I only saw one guy get tossed out of the dot so far, that is a rarity! :lol

Edit: I have no idea why I do not like Matt Dumba. Not a clue but he drives me crazy. He is a good guy, he is not dirty, he does not talk trash, he is not a media whore, he is a good player, very classy and has never done anything that pissed me off or hurt the Hawks yet I still don't like they guy and have no good explanation. He is pretty much everything I would want in a player on my team and for whatever reason he still drives me insane. Anyone else dislike players for no good reason at all?

I did not know that either. I am curious why they even bother with a banner for losing the Stanley Cup. OK - part of me gets that hey want SOMETHING to commemorate and obviously winning the WC was a big accomplishment but I thought if they put up a banner they'd have done it with no fanfare and no one in the building - not like it is a Stanley Cup Champion or Presidents Trophy banner. Weird - though thinking back I do recall the Whalers having some oddball banners for winning the division (but getting swept in the first round) once.

Wow - what a bad call on the review. Wild player did not have control of the puck and BOTH his skates were fully in the zone before the puck crossed the blue line. Ref did not even provide an explanation to Q. Course naturally with this new rule for challenges lost the Hawks got shorthanded and Minnesota scored. This should still be a 1-1 game. That was nonsense. Not even being a homer here - if anyone else saw the different angles that play was clearly offsides.

It was the correct call. From the NHL rule book:

"If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own defending zone while a player of the opposing team is in such defending zone, the off-side shall be ignored and play permitted to continue."

In other words - if the Hawks pass the puck into their own defending zone while the Wild are offside, it's waived off. Since Seabs put the puck over the line into the zone, it doesn't matter where Stewart's feet are, it's an onside play. He could have been below the goal line, doesn't matter. If Seabs is the one to physically push the puck past the blue line, Stewart is onside.

Re: The NHL Thread (Penns are garage league champs)

Seabrook did not take that puck into his own zone though - he was flat on his ass. They ruled that the Wild guy had obsession. Nonsense. That was the wrong call.

After that game I hope Hayden broke Marcus Foligno's god damned face during that fight (reaction to the cheapshot on Seabrook) and he is out for months.

What are you talking about? Where did you see or hear that they "ruled" that? Because they didn't.

Watch the replay. The puck hits Seabrook's right skate when he falls down and enters the zone. Stewart doesn't touch it until it's over the line. So Seabrook put it in the zone (off his skate) and so, again, it doesn't matter where Stewart was. It's an onside play.

It's a weird situation for that ruling, but that's the rule. And they ruled it correctly. That's why it took so long. They were making sure Seabrook was the last one to touch it before it completely crossed the line.

Of course I saw it and the ref explained the ruling after the game apparently - according to the post-game. As for Seabrook, yeah it hit his skate to enter the zone but there was no way he could avoid it because he was stumbling and sliding on the ice. Would have been nice if that damn ref had made ANY explanation for the benches and the fans because that was a really big call they blew IMO.

Chicago came out real flat tonight but Crawford kept them in the game for 55 minutes, they just plain got hosed out of at least a point IMO.

Before the game started I actually felt bad for Minnesota because they have only 4 games in the first 16 days of the season, now i hope they get beat in every game for the rest of the season.

Edit: Meant possession, not obsession.

They didn't blow the call at all though! It's literally the rule. I agree they should have explained it to Q, but their judgement call was to keep play going. Not sure why, but they made the right call.

Sorry about the Nats, by the way. I mean I can’t say I expected anything else. But yeah, still sucks. Every time with this city! It’s like clockwork

Re: The NHL Thread (Penns are garage league champs)

I'd again like to thank Athanasiou for not being here because that made sure Martin Frk made the team and he's got 3 goals in 4 games. Funny to think a little over a year ago he was waived by the Wings and claimed by the Canes and then waived by the Canes again and the Wings brought him back to Grand Rapids. I'm guessing he'll be able to get better than his month to month rental the Wings told him to get.

On the Wings (well NHL) the Yotes are still so fucking bad. A shorthanded goal is the game winner with just over 3 minutes left. How do you let that happen? Oh and Sabers still suck too. If either of them want a goalie at the end of the season, Wings will have one available.

Man I went to bed at 4-1 with the Nats, not that that's a safe lead by any stretch, but looking at the final now....that's Caps territory.

Funny how he gets away with the cheap shots, yet gets special treatment on the smallest hit on himself. NHL gonna NHL

City is cursed. Longest streak without major 4 winning a conference title

Jersey took it to Toronto the other night. I couldn't believe how fast they played. They skated circles around Toronto, who are no slouch in the speed department.

I'm still absolutely baffled about how the refs could call two penalties on the Flyers with less than three minutes left in a one goal game.

Im gonna go ahead and guess they committed two penalties with less than three minutes left in a one goal game.

Probably should avoid doing that.
