oh, they'll be caught if they keep losing or give up points against Metro teams. They've played a shitload of games as of now, and other teams have not. Flyers will get a break starting next week, and a lax schedule the rest of the way. They better shape up.

Among others, you bet. A Duchene for Shattenkirk trade sounds about right. I always said when we traded Shattenkirk that it would hurt more than Stewart, and it certainly has. It would suck to lose Duchene - I love his work ethic - but something's gotta give. You will balk, but I'd LOVE for the Avs to make a push for Hjalmarsson.

I feel they rushed him into the lineup last year and that hurt his development more than helped it. Needs probably another year in the minors. At his best, he's got good PP instincts and is an excellent skater who generally makes smart plays with the puck. At worst, he's a bit undersized and doesn't always make the greatest decisions WITHOUT the puck. The latter can be developed. You interested?

:lol As for Bigras, I was mostly just curious. The Avs CLEARLY need help on the backend, and besides Shatty, there really just aren't a lot of upcoming UFA this summer for them to go after.

Bigras always seemed like a guy that was underrated, and I was hoping he did well.

I think they will pursue a trade before UFA. They should, anyway. They need help in every aspect. They're just a mess.

While everyone's all excited, talking about win streaks, I'm over here reveling in our 11 game (I think - I'm not counting anymore) winLESS streak. What a mess.

The match was good, but it went too long. It shouldn't have gone another 5-10 minutes after it peaked. Way too many clotheslines (really lame finisher by Okada btw) at the end, but it was one helluva match. Definitely worthy of the praise.

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

Wings lose again. I think Smith and Vanek will be on the block and one article suggested Drew Miller and Steve Ott with their expiring contracts. If you need a good 4th line guy who can do PK both of them fit that, especially Miller. I'd be tempted to trade Green because he's probably one of your most tradeable assets but with how bad their D is, they won't be any better without him next year so I can see holding onto him.

I mean, it's just crazy...they have the least goals for and the most goals against in the entire league. They have a -52 goal differential and we're not even halfway through the season yet. I mean, the worst goal differential in the entire league last year at the end of the season was -52.

It just seemed like they were so close a few years ago. Then you lost Ryan O'Reilly in a trade that is largely a bust (Nikita Zadorov is awful, and Grigorenko is ok I guess) and Paul Stastny for literally nothing. How you basically exchange talent like O'Reilly and Stastny for Zadorov and Grigorenko is mind blowing. The iginla signing was a bad idea from the start.

But they still have solid building blocks in MacKinnon, Landeskog, Duchene, and Erik Johnson. Varlamov can be a good goaltender if you put a decent defense in front of him. How's Tyson Barrie been doing? I think if you add some solid pieces like Shattenkirk you can rebuild relatively quickly. Maybe Martin Hanzal? Daniel Winnik? Hell, maybe helping a cap constrained team like the Hawks/Ducks/etc. and grabbing someone like Marcus Kruger or Antoine Vermette wouldn't be a bad option.

Just seems like they're closer than their record indicates with a core like they have. Obviously Landeskog hasn't been having a good year, but everyone goes through slumps. The talent is obviously there.

That's really how the NHL could boost viewers and fans. Adapt WWE tactics. Imagine if during the next Pens- Panthers game Jagr punches his own winger and pulls off his sweater to reveal a Pens logo underneath.

I've had dreams like that - they were glorious.

i was at a game at the Igloo maybe a decade or so ago and the lights went out twice, once while play was going on. it was actually kind of scary at first because it wasn't too long after 9/11 and that's the first thought that comes to mind.

also, it was the only game i can think of that ended 1-0 and the only goal scored was on a penalty shot.

it was the only game i know of that had a period longer than 20 minutes :lol the 3rd period was 27 minutes due to the outage and adjusted intermission. one of the craziest sports nights i've ever been a part of

the crowd started chanting "new arena" and viola, Mario answered our cries.

Party Hard is a great goal song. I think would be better if it was the bumper music prior to when that line comes up for a faceoff.

Ditto - congrats to team USA! Well earned win coming back twice from two goal deficits, getting it to OT, killing a penalty in OT and then winning in a shootout. So happy for those kids.

Nice to see the Hawks finally win too, coming back 3X to tie it up late and force an OT where Kane ended it pretty darn quick.

Lastly, congrats to Duncan Keith on his 400th career assist!

Lcsulla 01-05-2017 09:02 PM

Re: The NHL Thread (lolcaps)

Funny too, I was laughing all night during the Hawks game when the announcers would say he was the 'old man' on the team - dude is a year younger than I am! :lol

Also, had to be a bit daunting for Spencer Abbott playing on a line with Toews and Hossa in his second career NHL game - not often a guy in Abbot's position gets an opportunity to play on a line with 2 guys who have won a combined 6 Stanley Cups!

Way to go Caps, nice to see someone finally shut down Columbus!

That was a fantastic f-ing hockey game last night. Terrible it had to be decided in a shootout. All credit to the American lads. Down by 2 twice and never once flinched.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - hands down my favourite hockey tournament. Hopefully the IIHF can change their overtime ways (but I don't realistically see that happening). Oilers won last night, so that's a +

Tend to agree. Olympics are great but there is something about the energy that the kids bring that you don't see from the pros. If that makes sense. Olympics I guess are more structured but the craziness of the juniors can be fun. The one 7 years ago when Carlson won it in OT was nuts.

How do I catch a replay of the Juniors game? I had to miss it as well.

Do you have VLC player?

Yep, they are scathingly bad.

The frustrating thing is that they really do have a solid core. MacKinnon, Landeskog, Duchene up front (with Raantanen looking better too). Johnson and Barrie on the back (I realized after EJ went down with an injury just how important he was to the team. They are even WORSE defensively without him). And to answer your question, Barrie has been decent in playing his role of offensive defenseman. He needs a stronger defensive partner to not be a liability though, as he's terrible in his zone. And then, in net, you've got two good goalies in Varlamov and Pickard.

So yeah, the core is there. But you also can't blame it ALL on the supporting cast. I mean, it's not great, but you can't blame the kind of dismal showings the Avs are putting out all on the supporting cast. There has to be some sort of culture adjustment, some sort of major change. I'd hate to lose Duchene or Landeskog to a trade, but that might be what has to happen.

That, or they could consider moving the #1 pick they'll most likely get. Nolan Patrick looks good, but he's not Auston Matthews (watch me eat my words next season).

A lot of the moves the Avs made have been good... in theory. They definitely should have moved Stastny before letting him go to UFA. They were trying to show they were committed to him, and it backfired. They were pushed into a corner with ROR, and them getting Zadorov was seen at the time as a risky investment that, if it paid off, would mean the future Rob Blake on their blueline. He's still young and I'm not ready to give up on him yet. Think Victor Hedman and how long it took him to really hit his stride. I'm not wearing rosy colored glasses, just being patient in knowing there's often extra development time for young defensemen.

If the Avs could have stayed on their positive trajectory, no one would be saying anything about the Iginla signing. I didn't love the money, but I loved the idea. I'm devastated it didn't work out, mostly for him.

I agree a couple pieces can make a difference. Duchene for a defenseman like Shattenkirk, Faulk, Hjalmarsson, or Hamonic would be a great step in the right direction. If they keep the #1 pick the hope is that Nolan Patrick could fill Duchene's role. Make some moves for guys like you mentioned, maybe add someone like Brian Boyle and Justin Abdelkader to the list (I love those guys so much), and you've got some solid pieces up and down the lineup.

That, and bring Bob Hartley back.

EDIT: Oh, and Joe Sakic should consider stepping down as GM in favor of someone with more experience. Hate to say it, Joe, and it doesn't diminish your playing legacy in any way, but maybe general management just isn't your thing.

Covered a high school hockey game between two of the state's best teams. One is the alma mater of all three van Riemsdyk brothers and the other has a pair of Danny Briere's kids on it. Saw Danny B at the rink as well.

Hey Tim, what are the odds you think the Wings end up being sellers at the deadline? I wonder how good of a fit Vanek would be with the Hawks.

Just saw the McCabe hit. Damn.

The immediate jumping of a man who delivered a clean hit continues to be disappointing. Glad the refs only penalized the Jets player.

That's where I'm at right now. Only 5 points out of a playoff spot because that Atlantic blows. I said the 7 game trip would make or break them and as of now they are in between that. 2-2-1 through 5. I will take the poistives, Mantha is starting to show he's what they thought, AA (can't spell his name) looked good the last few and YOUR boy Nielsen I was ready to write off as not working out here, has come on as of late. My team overall is terribly inconsistent and their D is terrible.

I wonder if helmets could be reasonably engineered to better protect from those back of the head ice impacts?

Everything I've read said research has shown there's only so much helmets can do. At the end of the day, it's still a sudden impact which can cause the brain to strike your skull.

Yeah to slow the deceleration in any meaningful way they'd probably have to be way thicker and get replaced after an impact like bike helmets.

In the latest Virginia Tech study of helmets, the most expensive/"best" material helmets did not test well (Bauer RE-AKT 100, CCM Resistance).

The new Bauer RE-AKT 75 is apparently the best on the market right now, (source: https://vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2016/...etratings.html) but the amount of work that went into creating that helmet and fixing things with the RE-AKT 100 is staggering.

The NHL really needs to help fund some of this research and development, but getting there will be a LONG and difficult road. As soon as they start funding, it will basically be admitting that hockey causes concussions, which they have yet to do.

I am still totally amazed about how the Rangers are only in a Wild Card spot currently given how well they have played this year. Really speaks volumes about how competitive the Met division is. It is crazy to think the Rangers will need to be even better than they have been in order to avoid being a Wild Card team.

Dumb. That really stinks for teams that rock vintage throwbacks like the Flames, Oilers, and Caps.

Being a wild card might not be terrible. Whatever draws Columbus in round one, that's where I want to finish.
