The Pens, on the other hand, figured out how to score goals, which has been something they've been working on since Sully took over. They turned Rangers mistakes into goals. Kuhnackl's shortie, for example, partially resulted from one of the worst line changes I've ever seen.

The Pens need to play their game better, and I believe they will. I'm not writing the Rags off yet, though.

don't get me wrong, the Pens probably deserved to win, but they weren't 3 goals better than the Rags last night

the shorty by Kuhnhackl was awesome, and it shifted the game for good in the Pens' favor

BUT...if we can't enter the zone on the power play and get set up, it's not going to be a long run at all

Rangers also had much better jump from the get-go...can't wait til the 2nd period to get going in the playoffs

Anyway, seeing Roose and Bo posting in here and seeing the Staals on the ice last night reminded me of a conversation I had with my buddy once about what if professional sports was like professional Wrestling.

Picture this... Mark Staal on purpose hits lunqvist with this stick. Announcers, be like, "Why Mark?!?! Why?!?!?!"

All of a sudden, "Good God almighty!!!! That's Jordan Staal's music!!!!"

The door opens out come Jordan with a pens jersey on. Looks at Mark and Mark takes off his rangers jersey to reveal a pens jersey and they both skate over and beat up Eric.

I like that it's been a semi-chippy game with some extracurriculars, especially when guys like Kucherov are getting into it.

Great game, just got a tad frustrating near the end with all the stoppages - penalties, fights, reviews, etc, etc. Missed ten minutes of the Hawks/Blues game last night before CBS switched over.

I'd love for him to stick around even after all that happened this year. He's got all the talent, just handled the situation really poorly by him and his agent.

Yeah, he played great, only negative things you could possibly say about him are that he is a bit hotheaded and took an offside call that a vet would never have taken.

Despite the outcome that game was everything you want in a playoff game. Lots of scoring chances, great D on both sides, PK rock solid on both ends, lot of hitting and both goalies brought their A game. I do feel bad for TVR, that St. Louis goal ten minutes into OT took an odd hop and bounced off him into the net. Holy damn was Elliot on his game last night - from snuffing out breakaways, slamming the door on a 2 on 0 rush, smothering it when he need to, playing it when he needed to, recovering from small mistakes, being in the right spot every single time - hell if if it was any other guy in net (or Elliot made one bad mistake) Chicago probably steals that game in regulation. Damn what a game, this is going to be a long series with fans on the edge of their seats every game. That was maybe the tightest playoff game I have ever seen. Will be a nice boost for Chicago to get Keith back tomorrow.

There was definitely some noticeable "first playoff game jitters" by many of the Pens last night. I'm hoping that the win soothes some of those nerves and they can calm down.

i don't know man, i disagree. it was the guys with no experience who played the best last night

Kuhnhackl
Sheary
Zatkoff

need the power play and the zone exits to get much better and i think they'll be fine

if the Flyers contain the Caps' PP, its going 7 games IMO

so-so. I think if we can contain the Caps to one PP goal a game we'll be fine. Obviously, all the attention has to be on Ovechkin. They do that, and they'll be fine.

yup, they'll need to shade their diamond or box to the left circle for sure

i expect lots of hits and lots of goals in the series...especially if the officiating in last night's games in any indication of how the 1st round will be called

I didn't see any jitters from the pens either.
It took a fluke dual simultaneous penalty for the rangers to break the ice.
sluggish, sure, but not jittery

yea agreed

Rangers should feel ok after that game though. these are 2 pretty evenly matched teams and NY played well, just couldn't finish

shaping up to be a fun series...if the Rangers win on Saturday, it's on big time

if the Pens win, it'll be very hard for the Rags to comeback...i don't see a repeat of 2014 happening

Maybe jittery was the wrong word - perhaps tentative might be better. Like you said, entering the zone was a major issue. Do you think they'll maintain the 11 forwards 7 defense setup that used last night (assuming there are no changes in player availability)

as long as Lovejoy keeps playing well, i see no need to change it up until Malkin comes back

now, when Malkin comes back, they'll have a HUGE decison to make because the blue line is playing so well

i mean, Letang, Daley, Maatta, and Cole are untouchable at this point

so you'd have to dress 2 guys out of Shultz, Lovejoy and Dumoulin

glad i'm not the coach

Caps PP always seems to abandon them in the playoffs anyway

They're a bit too predictable. They certainly have the weapons to score from basically anywhere on the pp but clearly they prefer the Ovie set up. For good reason too I guess, he scores from there a lot. The 1-3-1 has become so stationary unfortunately. Almost zero rotation. It's become somewhat easier to defend.

yep, the Pens figured out the Caps' PP, thats for sure

Ovie 0 points against the Pens this year and Caps are 0-7 on the PP in the season series

Wow, I thought you were joking. No way in hell I would miss an NHL playoff game for some silly draft. At least try and snag that girl from UCONN - sure she is arrogant and comes off bitchy but she can dominate.

Edit:

Quote:

The Huskies (38-0) have been nearly unbeatable since Stewart arrived. They lost four games her freshman year and only one since. The win over Syracuse was the 75th straight for UConn, all by double figures. Stewart and her fellow seniors went 24-0 in NCAA tourney games, too.

Stewart earned the most outstanding player of the Final Four all four years of her career. No other women's player has won it more than twice and only Lew Alcindor did it three times on the men's side.

The three-time AP Player of the Year has said it is up to others to decide her place in women's college basketball lore. There is no denying she is the most accomplished player ever, winning more titles than fellow UConn greats Diana Taurasi and Maya Moore, who watched from the stands at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

I want them swept. Badly.

Cool story bro...

Seriously though, not all of our fans are like this. Having said that, I have come to realize we have some pretty dumb fans who can't be reasoned with. I find it really annoying to talk to Rangers fans that have an unrealistic view of where this team is. We don't lose because the league is "getting us." We lose because this team is not that good lol. We are solid, but I think you would have to be really high on something to have ever thought this team was a cup contender.

I kind of get it though, a lot of our fans are also Yankees fans....and they are the worst.

I agree that the scenery is amazing. That said you do not want to be wandering around at night or leaving the tourist areas during the day do the crime rate. It is also rather annoying that seemingly every native is trying to sell me some drug or another or some stupid trinket. I even had some girl asked if I wanted my hair braided - I shave my head, 3 times before I finally gave her five bucks to leave me alone. I have been there at lest half a dozen times in the past decade and will take St. Maarten any day of the week!

Edit: yes, there were some very kind people living there, though most of them were working at restaurants or those shack waterfront bars.

Gotcha, makes sense. I practically grew up on beaches and swimming in the ocean. One of the perks of my dad owning a travel agency (not running it though because he was a director and VP of security - former police officer before some drunk ran him down with a car - at my local hospital) that specialized in Caribbean trips!

That may be the saddest thing I have ever read.

I think that is why the playoffs are so special because once they start there is a small fire building in your heart that raising Lord Stanley's fabled cup is a possibility. I know I felt it it last night during the Pens game.

So know that I stand with you, here and now! Part of it is due to your impassioned words, but mostly because I fucking hate the Flyers...

Great post. I'm a 100% believer. Hope springs eternal. If it ends up in disappointment so be it.

From the early days at the capitol centre til now, this is our best team. I wish my Dad was here to enjoy this with us.

Go Caps!

:thumbsup great post. You put into words what I have felt being a fan of the worst original six team and arguably the worst team in NHL history. I do think getting to the ECF 3 times in 4 years and making a run at the cup has softened the blow recently for fans of our club. The truth is though, winning the ECF two years ago was the happiest moment I have had as a sports fan. I can only imagine what it must be like to win the whole damn thing! Like you, I honestly worry that I will never experience one. One cup in 75 years doesn't make the odds great. We can only hope as fans.

As to your Caps. They have all the pieces in place. They have had the heartbreak of losing when they were the better team (yes folks, the Caps were a better team than my Rangers last year...just not over those seven games). Ovie has yet to push past that wall of success. All of that said, this is the best Caps team they have ever had. I would trade my team with yours anyday.

Barbs, if the Rangers don't win it this year(and let's be honest, they are not), I really hope the Caps do it for you!!

One thing I will say about the Caps team compared to others in the past is that they seem to be playing bigger and more physical. This could be wrong because I have only seen a few of their games, but that could pay off huge for them in the playoffs.

God damnit Carlson is going to have a bright fucking future. I love Poti for sticking up for OV when the goons where starting shit. And to Backstrom, god I fucking love you. This team loves to play the game of hockey. Look at them on the ice after each goal. No team loves to play hockey and kick ass as much as the Capitals do. This team hasn't even played good hockey yet. Semin has been shutout. OV isn't playing his best. The defense has been awful. The goaltending sucked something awful too. But the Caps still find a way to win, and that's what winners do. Caps will sweep the rest of the series. Great fuck-ing win.

In the words of Dave after Piedmont, 'Good grief, thank you, good god'. Go Caps.

I just researched. That quote came after Game 2 of the 2010 first round when the Caps beat Montreal 6-5 in OT to tie the series. Washington went up 3-1 in the series and then choked :lol

No idea, but I'd love to facilitate something if there's enough interest. I guess if Friday is booked for the Ants party we can do pre show Saturday or maybe late Friday night. Pretty much whatever works for me, I know a ton of good spots we can go and I've taken the entire weekend off work

Great post, Barbs! :thumbsup

Because I'm a human being and have empathy, I can understand your pain. I think back to when I was a kid rooting hard for the Pens, celebrating every time they beat the Caps. Out there, somewhere, there was a young Barbs who was crushed. I realize how fortunate I've been as a Pens fan. In all three of the Pens Stanley Cup victories, the Pens beat the Caps on the way there. :lol That must have been as tough for you to watch as it was fun for me. I really do hope you get to experience the Caps lifting the Cup someday, because it is an experience like no other.

Though as a Pens fan, I have to root for the Pens. I feel the way about Pens hockey as you do about Caps hockey. I was raised during the Lemieux era, and stuck it out through the spectacular Rico Fata era. For the Pens, the iron is red hot right now, and they have to strike. I know they've done it three times, but I want them to do it again. After Chicago winning three and LA winning two, if the amazing core of Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Fleury only win one, it will seem like a waste of that talent. (Though if Ovechkin, Backstrom and Holtby never win one, that will be an equal waste of talent.)

And because Ted Leonsis has such an inferiority complex when it comes to the Pens, it's hard for me to root for the Caps. But if they do well, I'll be very happy for you.

I'm day to day with a game-time decision for C-Ville. I don't think I'll make it, but I might do it on a whim if I can.
