Someone must have told them the Canes won! As soon as I flipped to NHL Network the Red Wings looked fantastic.

The difference between the two games was hilarious, polar ends of the spectrum. Canes won on a crap rebound, while the Jets could barely get the puck (barring hitting the crossbar at the end). That said, I honestly can't believe how good Slavin is getting. Everytime I watch him he seems more and more comfortable and confident. Hanifin is also ridiculous. Pesce is solid but less loud. Even Ryan Murphy, who I dislike strongly for his tendency to let pucks squirt past the blue line, looked good. I love defensemen, so being a Canes fan is pretty cool. Just waiting for Faulk to come back!!

Finally get to get back to the arena the Tuesday I get back from break, excited to watch Eichel and Kane (if he plays). Canes on a road trip while I'm on break is convenient.

Just put this sticker on my computer, I think it's one of the cooler things I've found. :)

On the Red Wings side, their power play was super fun to watch. Datsyuk in particular, just effortless looking distribution on the blue line when I saw him drift up there.

I couldn't decide whether Abdelkader's hit was dirty or not. It seemed to hit some head, but it also seemed like the Winnipeg player was falling. Either way, the last 10 minutes were a fun watch. :thumbsup

Just like that, the Avs control their own destiny. Even if the Wild even it out in points with their game in hand, the Avs own the tiebreaker.

Just secure the same or more points than the Wild from here on out and it's playoffs.

See I thought the Wings PP looked awful. Better as the game went on, but their first 1 (maybe 2) you might as well as just forwarded the clock 2 minutes.

The hit I thought was ok but of course I'm biased. Seemed mostly shoulder to shoulder. If there was any head, you are right, the Jets players kinda put himself in that position.

Fuck you. ;) and go Lightning. Fantastic finish since they won but man that first period was so fucking bad. There were some boos coming down and I can't say I blame the people who did. This wasn't the Hawks, Ducks or Caps. This was the freaking Jets in a virtual must-win game and you came out like you weren't fighting for a playoff spot. Second period on though, they were great. Watched parts of the game when I got up this morning and wow that shot of the post was close. That was right in front of me. My seat was basically looking down the goal line so I saw it glance off. Hopefully for their sake this is a game that helps build momentum cause they aren't as bad as they've been.

Leaving your feet for a shoulder-to-shoulder check is a charging minor. And even then, it's up to interpretation. Even with a clean body check, there is almost always some aspect of skates leaving the ice as momentum carries the hitter forward into the player. It's up to the ref to decide if it was just that, or if there was something more egregious. Now, usually leaving your feet MEANS that high contact is being made, hence sometimes more serious penalties.

A double minor is usually only imposed if a) two fouls were committed on the same play, or b) a visible injury occurred as a result of the play, i.e., high sticking a guy in the mouth, and he starts bleeding.

OK, here's what he didn't do:
- There were no excessive strides before the hit. He was gliding all the way.
- I felt like Ehrhoff was going for the puck in such a way that Reaves could reasonably expect him to have it, and therefore be eligible for the hit. By the time Ehrhoff pulled up, Reaves was already on trajectory to hit him.
- He did leave his feet, but I feel it was more a product of the hit itself (however, more on this below)

Despite all that though, there was one kicker: He targeted the head. It was a clear high hit that Reaves is responsible for. If he would have lowered his shoulder and taken Ehrhoff right in the chest (or bent over and given him some hip action, which is much more fun ;)), not only would his skates have stayed more on the ice, but it would have been a completely clean and legal check. Not even a minor penalty.

While I wouldn't have given him a match penalty, you know how I am with head shots and illegal hits: I want them gone, and the only way to really effect change is severity in penalization. With that in mind, even though there was no apparent injury or anything like that, I STILL would have given him a 5-minute major for illegal contact to the head and a game misconduct.

Yeah, the angle the ref had was not all that great to view it, nor were the replays so I can certainly see why they tossed him. Had he went down a little it would not have looked like an intentional shot to the head - ignoring the puck didn't help his case either. That said, I do not think he was intentionally trying to hurt him.

I would have been pissed too. I have been tossed out of some games myself and am generally really annoyed both at myself and at the officials.

I hope Subban is alright, sucks to loose a guy like that.

Alex Galchenyuk is playing some amazing hockey lately and flying under the radar somehow.

Nice win for the oilers!

I think there's hardly ever an instance where one player is intentionally trying to seriously injure another player. so intent isnt always a factor. It's more about re-learning the proper technique for hitting.

And that's why I would've still given Reaves a game, even if I had the perfect angle of view as the ref. the fact that Ehrhoff wasn't injured makes it an even more poignant teaching moment, showing Reaves and others that hitting high like that is not ok, even if the guy is fine after.

And yeah, Subban is my least favorite player in the league by a long shot, but I hate to see anyone at any level be carter out on a stretcher. Hope he's OK.

It was nice to be on the winning end of that type of game. Wings have been on the losing end of way too many this season. Henrik was the only reason it was so close though. Now Wings need to be able to keep it up against the crappy Leafs tomorrow.

The Caps have not played with a lead for 5 consecutive games now. Not the best time to be playing their worst hockey of the season, but they've still got a month to figure this out.

He should get pay for the other 9 games. So instead of missing 20 games of pay its just 10. 9 games of pay is roughly half a million dollars for him

Rough west coast swing for the Caps. Historically they've never played very well on the West coast. Not an excuse but at least they're not pooping the bed at home?

Right now all the "good" teams in the NHL have been very inconsistent recently. Hawks have played .500 hockey over their past 20 or so games. Panthers lost the Atlantic lead to the lowly B's. Bruins are a very inconsistent team overall. Wings aren't getting results. Stars have heated up recently but they're still very inconsistent at times. Kings haven't been playing very well, losing to the Devils at home last night. Isles lost Halak and have been very streaky lately.

Flyers making their yearly push in March. Always seems like they get hot in March to get close to contention and then fizzle out by April

Hopefully returning to home for the Caps will get the ball rolling again...

Even if this is the case I would be upset but not as much as past seasons. The Flyers were not supposed to be playoff contenders this year. However, this team does not seem like a team that is just merely playing hot. This team seams like a team who has come into their own. With Pittsburgh losing Malkin for the regular season the Flyers chances have just gotten a lot better.

I do agree to an extent. If they make the playoffs or not they have made better strides a a team this year, with Giroux and Voracek under performing for at least half of the year.

Sean Coutourier is the key to that time I think. When he was out the Flyers were giving up goals on goals from all over the ice specifically the blue line. When he is in the LU it's a completely different team.

Flyers season I think boils down to the next 4 games. They play the Wings, Hawks, Penguins & Isles. If they can get 5 or 6 points out of those next 4 games I think they have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs. If they can only come up with 2 or 3 it's hard to see them making it. Especially when they finish the season @Pit, @Det, Tor, Pit, NYI. The fact that they do play the Pens 2 times in the last couple games they could make up ground for sure, but the next 4 games are crucial for them.

No panic at all here, just a curiosity about where they will be seeded come playoff time. Every team hits rough patches in a long season, glad the Hawks are hitting theirs at this point - Hossa getting back in the mix, integrating Ladd, Weise, Ehrhoff and Fleischmann to the system, not to mention Kruger will likely be back for the playoffs to center the fourth line and add some physical presence to help out Shaw, Mashinter and Ladd in that department. Just have to get in in gear for the stretch before the first round. Gonna be a good measuring stick tonight facing LA.

They are still the team to beat in the east. Come playoff time though it all goes out the window because it is almost a new season. If they can get the puck to Ovi to shoot on net (whether he scores or simply causes a rebound that can be cashed in) they will keep on rolling. Conversely if they play a team with a solid D than can shut down his lanes they may be in for an early exit. Playoff hockey is a royal pain to predict so even great teams like the Caps, Stars, Rangers, Hawks, Kings or Ducks could go either way - an advance to the finals would be doable but on the other side of the coin I could see any of those teams make an early exit if they cool off against a hot team. Again, who the heck knows, I am no Miss Cleo!

Never assumed you were. It is a long season and becomes a grind because the players take a beating plus the teams have to worry about injuries and too much ice time for their key guys. It is natural that even the better teams have cold streaks. Admittedly I hate loosing streaks as much as anyone but I know they can turn be turned around in a game or two. Teams are never as good as they look on their best day nor are they as bad as they look on their worst day.

Just got home from work, missed the 3rd. This game did not turn out how I thought it would, I am pleasantly surprised.

Bonus that Dustin finally got one in.

Unbelievable how solidly we got crushed at home. They capitalized on every opportunity, exploited every mistake, played a rock solid game and Quick played the game of his life. Nowhere to go but up from here.

Interested to see Mantha's debut for the Wings. They are being smart and not playing him on the 4th line like so many teams tend to do with skilled players they call up. Let him play with the skilled guys and get minutes the way he is used to in the AHL. You can't put a skilled guy in for 8 minutes and then wonder why he doesn't produce. He'll be with Datsyuk and Tatar tonight and get PP time.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun:
"Goalie equipment update was given to GMs today. Sense is it's full steam ahead with streamlined goalie equipment. NHLPA and NHL on same page"

Now this won't solve the issue on offense, but this is much needed. Two guys that I compare from different times are Felix Potiv and Corey Crawford. They are roughly the same size physically but put Potiv in pads from 1994 next to Crawford in pads today...Crawford looks at least twice as big.

Flyers have won 10 straight against the Wings in Philly going back to June 3rd 1997. Wonder what was significant about that game....

Yep, you're gonna see guys like Crawford be a LOT less effective when they start to slim pads. It's way overdue. Those guys are way too fucking big in those things.

Didn't Corey Crawford publicly say he was in favor of shrinking the pads? Maybe it was Corey Schneider

No excuses for the Caps tonight. Time to snap out of the funk. This should be a cakewalk, even if Carolina is desperate

couple weeks ago.. we were at the Tampa win last week so I figured he could take a buddy of his if he wanted to since I did the same earlier in the year.

Still got Caps at the end of the month and the Leafs in April left for us. Hope those games are just as important.

Definitely not Craw. I'm trying to think which goalies would be most effected by this. I think it'll be really interesting to see just how much and what pads their shrinking. The blocker FOR SURE can shrink. Shoulders. Parts of the catching glove. Leg pads can probably lose a little bit to open up the 5 hole...
