Girl didn't even want to go to Kane's house. If all this is true and he winds up avoiding jail (settlement always possible). I really hope he's off the Hawks sooner than later.

they'll never have the winter classic since it's jan 1st and there's too large of a chance osu could have a bowl game the same day.

they could get a stadium series game in february though, there's been some discussion about that.

why does tOSU having a bowl matter?

its not like they'd be playing it at the Shoe

and last year, the winter classic started at 1:00PM, while the national semi-final football games started at 5:10PM and 9:00PM respectively

doesn't matter who is playing, NHL will not try to compete with college football for ratings

i think they'd be worried that people wouldn't go to the game if osu was playing later.
i know technically it works time wise where people could go to the hockey game and then home for the football game but people would be distracted.
also so many people travel from columbus to the bowl game osu is in, you'd be losing thousands of big sports fans that would possibly be in attendance.

They would have to sell ticket's by buyer's area code or billing zip code. :lol

What would be the NHL's incentive to hold the winter classic in a non-NHL city?

At least with the tOSU it's in columbus.

Speaking of tOSU... the reasoning of a bowl game makes no sense because of what H2P posted.... and the Wing's hosted a winter classic at the Big House.

State College is kind of unique in that its basically equidistant from 2 major hockey markets and its a great venue

i mean, technically Ann Arbor isn't an NHL city (i know its only 45 mins from detroit, but still, they could've had it at Comerica Park but they went for the bigger/more historic venue)

the bowl game issue has nothing to do with a conflict at the shoe. it has to do with people being out of town or not interested because of the bowl game. this isn't just my opinion this has been the organization and medias response to potentially hosting the winter classic here.

if there is a game at the shoe it will be a stadium series game in february.

Re: The NHL Thread

Pens/Flyers would awesome at PSU. It would easily sell out.

Isles are looking at Zdlicky. Not sure I like that. I wanted them to sign a veteran dman but more of a defensive crease clearing type. Zdlicky would only block someone like Pulock and his chance to shine on the PP with 100+ MPH slapper.

I haven't been around much. I was on vacation from work for 2 weeks straight and spent much of it out of town with the family racking up bills, getting too tan and not drinking enough while also listening to too much of their music in the car.

hailtopitt 08-13-2015 08:54 AM

Re: The NHL Thread

i also think the fact that the Pens have already been in 2 winter classics will hurt their chances of being in another one anytime soon

PSU makes sooo much sense though

for the record i think that the winter classic is dumb this year.

boston hosted one a few years ago and gillette is a boring venue. it's not even close to downtown.

st. louis should have hosted one at busch before they started doing repeats.

yea, i also think the Avalanche hosting at Coors or Mile High would be sweet, although the altitude + being outdoors in a colorado winter would certainly take its toll

Let's be really serious here and say Kane gets prison time.

where do the hawks finish by the end of March? Playoff spot? Out of the playoffs, or what?

Even without Kane, I think they find a way. They have young players in TVR and TT to pick up the slack. Toews is a top five player. Crawford turns it on when need be. Even without Kane, I think the team is still dangerous.

They played well without him this past year. I think they still make the playoffs and win a round or even 2 but do not think they can win the cup, though I doubt they can win the cup this year again anyways.

Seems back to back to really tough these days..

I can't possibly see a way where this moves to trial and he gets prison time fast enough to miss the start of the season. I mean look at how long the investigation is taking, and I'm ok with that, but if/when charges happen, then there will take time to get to the trial. The biggest question is, if he gets charged and it goes to trial, does the NHL )or Hawks) suspend him until the situation is resolved or does he play?

my guess is that he'll HAVE to be suspended because when you are charged and/or on trial for a felony, you usually can't leave the state so obviously his job will cause him to do that.

unless, of course, he gets some sort or special waiver from the judge or whatever. it also might be a better PR move for the team/league to just suspend him anyway.

Didn't think about the leaving the state part but yeah PR you want him away from your team. Everywhere he'd go he'd be getting questions and attention that team wouldn't want. Can you imagine them going into Buffalo on December 19th with him playing?

Just my opinion. At this point he's played for way too many teams to just be a Penguin.

Secondly, he was just a rookie and second year guy on the 91 & 92 Cup teams. Fleury and Badger way more important in Pens history IMO.

Yeah, they will make the playoffs with or without Kane because their roster is solid and deep. Toews, Desjardins, Kruger, Shaw, Tervanian, and Versteeg putting a lot of pucks in, Not to mention their defense is stacked as well with Keith, Seabrook, Van Reimsdyk, Rundblad and Daley seeing a lot of action. Also, both Crawford and Darling in the net are both capable of stepping it up a notch when the chips are down. Also noteworthy is that Q is a great coach!

They question for me in not whether they will make the playoffs but rather how far they will advance.

With Kane's status in limbo I am guessing they are wishing they had held on to Saad and Sharpe right about now!

I mean look at how long the investigation is taking, and I'm ok with that, but if/when charges happen, then there will take time to get to the trial. The biggest question is, if he gets charged and it goes to trial, does the NHL )or Hawks) suspend him until the situation is resolved or does he play?

Agreed! You also have to wonder if they can sign or trade for some extra support!

I think they lose in the first round without Kane.

Also think unless everything quickly dropped he will be suspended pending investigation and the team will try to distance themselves.

Well, we had a Pens fan include MAF in theirs, so....

To be honest, I don't know if they make the playoffs this year without Kane. I really don't.

Desjardins and Shaw are fine contributors in a bottom 6 role, but they certainly don't make the Hawks a playoff team if they weren't one already. Kruger isn't resigned yet, and they went from having too many guys at LW to having seemingly no one. Saad and Sharp was about as good of a 1-2 punch as you could have in the league on the left side, and they're both gone now.

So you have Toews and Hossa on the top line with...who? Bickell? Fuck, that's as bad as 2010-11 when it was Kopecky - Toews - Hossa. Who's your 2nd line center? Teravainen? They want to transition him to center this year, but then who are his wings? This is still a 20 year old kid that looks like he weighs 160 pounds in full pads, he still needs guys to open up space for him. So Versteeg and Dano? Third line is Panarin - Anisimov - Shaw? With ????? - Kruger - Desi on the 4th line? I just don't see it.

TvR was really solid, but needs to prove he can stay healthy. As soon as he was healthy from his original knee injury last year, he hurt himself again that knocked him out for an extra 4-6 weeks. But still, defense is...what?

Keith - Seabrook
Hjalmarsson - Daley
TvR - ??????

Rundblad is either bad, or just slow developing. Either way, he can't be counted on back there. If he proves everyone wrong, great, but he's AT BEST a 6th defenseman right now. Sometimes he's more of an AHL guy.

I mean, that is a team that is fighting for a playoff spot, at best. Dallas will make the playoffs this year, LA will be better, Colorado would have likely been a playoff team last year if it weren't for the slow start...the West is so deep and so good, I just don't see how the Hawks are a playoff team without Kane.

I don't think people are remembering how big of a struggle it was without him last year. I mean, yeah, they won some games, but they were all a struggle. Over the course of 82 games, it would catch up with them. The PP without him was PATHETIC. Absolutely dreadful. They were winning ugly, and that was when they had Vermette, Saad, Sharp and Oduya. They don't have those guys anymore.

I just don't see it. The Hawks could follow in the Kings footsteps and be a defending SC Champ on the outside looking in come playoff time.

What is strange about these too is that the first has a "last edited" note and the second does not

As good as Tavares is , I have a hard time putting him our Mt Rushmore any time soon. He could eventually get there but not yet. How does Bucci replaced Smitty, who backboned a team that won 4 straight Cups and 19 consecutive playoff series.

If there was any franchise who had a MT Rushmore set is stone for the foreseeable future, it is the Islanders with Bossy, Potvin, Trottier and Smith.

IF JT wins a cup, I could replace Smith. If we wind up making a cup final, win many playoff series and he gets to 1000 points or higher, I guess an argument could convince me otherwise. Until then, the 4 remains the same.

I think Bucci's Mt Rushmores are more projections than current. Could be wrong.

Ok, then maybe it makes a little more sense. I only clicked the link and scrolled to the Isles assuming it was the 4 it has been forever. I still think it will take a lot of work for JT to remove Smitty.

When I have time, I will read it all. I love stuff like that.

I might even bother reading the Blue Jackets.

Edmonton, Montreal, and you guys have your Mt. Rushmore cemented for good.
