The people who call Thornton a goon or a criminal just don't know what they're talking about. He was wrong but the guy has over 950 penalty minutes in his career and 0 suspensions. He's not a dirty player. Just happened to be in the wrong.

Whatever. The Hawks are built to win with a serviceable goalie which I believe Raanta is. they win because of defense.

the bigger issue is Handzus continuing to play on the 2nd line with Kane. so dumb.

Not that the game matters but, Yzerman will play in the Winter Classic Alumni Game. It was sounding as if he wasn't but confirmed. So awesome to see him one more time on the ice.

I knew you were going to post that, even before I clicked on the link. :) Let's be serious, Yzerman was one of the only redeeming qualities the Red Wings had back in the day. He was one of those guys I always had to pretend to hate but secretly loved.

Yeah there was a time where it seemed like any time Joe took a shot it was going in. Deadly. People talk about the wrist shots of Kessel, Ovechkin, etc. today, but even they couldn't match the power/accuracy/lightning release of Joe's.

What impresses me about Stevie Y looking back is how he changed for his team. He really gave it his all. When they needed him to do everything in the 80's and early 90's, he did it. When they needed more of a team guy when they got better in the mid-90's, he did it. When they needed him to be more defensive, he did it.

Nothing beats Sakic imo, comparing him to the guys you mention. Ovie scares me at times, but he can be quiet at times too.

What I love about Toews is how he's almost the perfect hybrid of Sakic and Yzerman. He reminds me so much of Sakic the way he handles the puck, skates, and glides through traffic (just watch the link I posted and you'll be amazed at how alike they look), combined with the grit, fire, and determination that Yzerman played with on a nightly basis.

That's what I love about him too. :thumbsup Yzerman was the perfect team guy. Sakic was very underrated in his commitment to defense and was always very responsible, but he did it more quietly. Few people were able to round out there game like Yzerman did though in the late '90s. Mad props for him doing whatever it took to help his team win.

If Yzerman would have been more defensive in his younger days, that's how I see Toews. You don't usually get guys to commit to two-way hockey at a young age so I give him a lot of credit there.
