There's been a few that haven't gone. I've never had an issue with guys declining the visit at all. It's their choice.

hey, I agree with his right to skip it. I just disagree with it. Going wouldn't have shown support for Obama. It would have shown support for his teammates and organization.

I just don't like it because I hate the Bruins and Tim Thomas.

Just kidding.

Tim Thomas is a terrorist.

I agree with his right to do it, i disagree with his doing it. There is nothing political about the event. If the Bruins were throwing their support behind Obama 2012, then I would be ok with it, but I hate when any athlete turns down an invite to the White House.

Just admit that you have no idea what you are talking about. Another dirty hit. Ovi acts like a clown again and he got 3 because of his prior dirty hits. Good riddance. You don't leap off the ice and into guys to hit them. That's not how it works.

really, crazy, seems out of character for hemsky. he probably found a way to hurt his own shoulder and miss the next 12 games while doing it too

yeah, i hope so too - didn't look good leaving the ice, but that only means so much i guess

i haven't seen the hit, flipped away while it happened and they haven't replayed it yet

Burns made a move along the boards to get by Hemsky, Hemsky stuck out his right leg (probably as an instinctual reaction) to stop him, they hit straight on. Then, as Burns twisted and fell, his leg sort of went at a strange angle against the boards as he fell. I think the initial hit hurt him quite a bit (he had a look of pain on his face right away), and the twisting fall may have made it worse.

The only thing that I disagree with the whole Tim Thomas thing is that there was no penalty to not going to a TEAM EVENT. Seguin misses a breakfast with the team and is penalized. Thomas misses a celebration with the team that won the cup but he wont stand beside them because he doesn't agree with the man that wants to shake his hand. :rolleyes Way to show up for your team, buddy.

Yes I'm sure Thomas did it to show up his team.

And for the record it wasn't against Obama it was against the government as a whole. He wouldn't have gone regardless of who was in office.

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

On one hand, I applaud Thomas for exercising his right to freedom of speech on a large level. He saw an opportunity to make a statement and he did.

On the other hand, while I'm sure he never truly intended to upstage his teammates, the fact is he did. Coverage of the Bruins actual trip tothe White House became a secondary story to Thomas not being there. His teammates are adults and probably won't make a fuss but it still sucks for them.

dduncan6er 01-24-2012 08:30 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

I just don't understand why his teammates would care. They went and they were recognized by the president, if they really hold this against Thomas there's bigger issues in the locker room than Thomas choosing not to visit the white house.

bonzo48280 01-24-2012 08:34 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

Not many people can hate the government more than me, but I would still go to the White House.

dduncan6er 01-24-2012 08:35 AM

Re: NHL 2011/2012 Thread

He also informed the team and management months ago that he wouldnt be going. So its not like this was some last second political stand by Thomas.

Shanny's got him numbered there I think. 3 to 1. Maybe that's why he did it. 3 games for the 3 Presidents Trophies he has and Ovie doesn't. Or maybe 3 for the 3 Cups shanny has and Ovie doesn't :)

This is my whole thing. It's not a political event. It's POTUS inviting you and your team to the White House. I didn't agree a lot with President Bush but I would have been there in a second and said a pleasure to meet you Mr. President. And while I don't think he meant to show up his team and take the attention away, like Matty said...he did. I respect Thomas's opinion and freedom of speech but just don't agree with not going.

It's easy to say when the party he is aligned with isn't in office though. How do we really know if Sen. McCain would have won 4 years ago and the country is where it's at today that he would have skipped? We'll never know.

It just bugs me because I'd be there in a second regardless cause it's the White House and it's not a political thing. POTUS wasn't inviting him to a rally for reelection at the Fleet Center. And as one of only 3(?) US born players he wasn't there while a bunch of Canadians and European's were.

But back to your regularly schedule program....17 home wins in a row. I hate to use the word statement game in January but it was the type of game you like to see when fighting for the division lead. It was a real grinder and those wins can feel good.

From one of the CBJ beat writers: If #Preds win in Chicago, and #CBJ lose in regulation to #Lightning, every Central Division club will have twice as many points as #CBJ.

This wasn't AO's first instance of a dirty hit. It was a blatant missed call an one that should have gotten him a trip to the showers early.
